To the surprise of everyone (except, perhaps, Brownsburg), the Brownsburg Bulldogs – the defending 6A state champions in Indiana – topped nationally-ranked Archbishop Spaulding out of Maryland on Friday night. The Bulldogs didn't just beat Spaulding, ranked No. 33 in the nation before the season; they won by double-digits and put 36 points on their defense.

For context, Spaulding gave up 34 points in all of last season's games combined.

There's no doubt Spaulding has a super-talented roster full of Division I recruits with offers. Still, it's amazing the defending 6A state champs in Indiana played so admirably. Here's a look at how they did it:

Top quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='709552' first='Oscar' last='Frye'] was laser-sharp in the opener, throwing 15-20 for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Frye is establishing himself as one of Indiana's most coveted recruiting prizes in the 2027 Hoosier State recruting class. Displaying a great arm with good deep-ball touch and a quick trigger, he looked very cerebral on Friday night as he led his team to victory.

Sharpe had a big night: 7 catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns. The Hoosier State has a very good wideout on Indianapolis' east side, but might Sharpe be even better? Sharpe has no star rating by most recruiting sites, but he's starting to position himself as a legit Power 4 recruit when college coaches hit the road this winter.

Sumtper-Bey had had 17 carries for 81 yards, but it was a tough 81 yards against that strong Spaulding defense. He managed to cash in on a touchdown and give the Bulldogs enough of a running game to open up passing opportunities downfield.

Gipson was Brownsburg's leading tackler on defense. The 5-foot-8 inside linebacker played much better than his size would indicate, recording 7 total tackles (6 for loss) on Brownsburg's stout defense.

Fields, a sophomore, has limited film, but he has a 6-foot-3, 240-pound frame and recorded a sack in the Spaulding game. Based on limited clips, he flashes great instincts, takes great angles to the ball and has good pursuit skills. He could be a name to know in the future; we'll be keeping an eye on him as he develops.
