Sumpter-Bey gashed the Irish all night long on the ground. He then added two scores on the night. He had one on the ground from 3 yards out, and then had a 5-yard receiving touchdown.
Sumtper-Bey had had 17 carries for 81 yards, but it was a tough 81 yards against that strong Spaulding defense. He managed to cash in on a touchdown and give the Bulldogs enough of a running game to open up passing opportunities downfield.
Sumpter-Bey stepped up in a big way this season and proved he could carry the load out of the backfield. He rushed for 800 yards and 7 touchdowns, showing good vision and the ability to finish runs. But what really stands out is how involved he was in the passing game, hauling in 24 catches for 282 yards and 3 more scores. He’s a reliable option on swing passes and screens and can line up wide when needed. He plays with patience, has good hands, and gives his offense flexibility with how he can be used. It was a breakout year, and he’s positioned to build on it even more.
Sumpter-Bey just transitioned to RB before this past season and did a heck of a job. He rushed for over 900 yards and had 1100+ total scrimmage yards. He also put up 10 total TDs in year 1. He’s shifty, willing to be patient, yet has the speed and urgency to make something happen. He’ll fight for extra yards and grind out first downs. I’m a big fan of Sumpter-Bey and think he’ll take off.
