#2 Union would run away from #8 Mustang with nearly 300 yards on the ground in a 46-7 victory and that sets up a showdown between unbeaten district teams next week with Edmond Santa Fe. Mustang was hurt by the loss of quarterback Trajan Williamson Trajan Williamson 6'3" | QB Mustang | 2025 State OK in the first quarter. He left the game with an injury to his hand and that put freshman Tyson Pogi Tyson Pogi 5'10" | 145 lbs | QB Mustang | 2027 State OK into the game for the Broncos. The Union defense would force four turnovers, scoring off the first three to run away with the 39-point win.
Mustang was on offense first and the Broncos had a methodical drive that ended with their only points on the night. They went 16 plays and ran the ball 15 times, converting on 4th down on multiple occasions and Williamson ran it in from a yard out. On Union’s first drive, all eyes were on freshman Kason Delgado Kason Delgado 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Union | 2027 State OK as he started for the Redhawks in place of Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK who was hurt last week against Norman. After going three and out, the Redhawks ran a fake punt and Devon Jordan Devon Jordan 6'1" | DB Union | 2024 State OK had a 42-yard gain. A few plays later, Issac Covington Issac Covington 5'11" | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK scored from five yards out and the two teams were tied at 7 after one quarter.
Late in the opening quarter, Covington would intercept Pogi and Union would score early in the second quarter to go up for good on a Jordan Schelling Jordan Schelling 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB Union | 2025 State OK touchdown run, the first of three for the junior on the night. Halfway through the second quarter, Mustang had back to back turnovers that resulted in Union points. Covington would force a fumble and then Ashton Cunningham Ashton Cunningham 5'9" | 135 lbs | DB Union | 2025 State OK came up with an interception and the Redhawks scored on Schelling’s second touchdown and then a 33-yard field goal to lead 24-7 at halftime.
On the first play of the third quarter, junior Boston Carrasco Boston Carrasco 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH Union | 2025 State OK would go 72 yards for a touchdown and the Redhawks kept the pedal down from there. After turning Mustang over on downs, Delgado found Jino Boyd Jino Boyd 6'0" | WR Union | 2024 State OK with his best pass on the night for a 37-yard gain and Schelling scored on the next play. Early in the fourth quarter, Delgado would find junior tight end Myles Davis Myles Davis 6'2" | 220 lbs | TE Union | 2025 State OK on the goal line for the final touchdown on the night. Union hits the road next week to face an Edmond Santa Fe team that’s unbeaten in district play. Mustang looks to snap their three-game losing streak next week against a scrappy Norman team.
UNION’S TOP PERFORMERS
Fresh off a dominant game against Norman, in which he had three sacks in a shutout victory, senior linebacker Isaiah Forbes Isaiah Forbes 6’0″ | 200 lbs | LB Union | 2024 State OK was one of the top defenders again for the Redhawks in a dominating win. Forbes led the team in tackles with ten on the evening. He was part of a Union defense that forced four turnovers and gave Mustang’s young quarterback a ton of problems on the evening. Union outgained Mustang by 172 yards on the night and Forbes would be a big part of that. Forbes has put up big numbers all year but this was our first chance to see the senior linebacker in person. He passed the eye test and he’s a 2024 prospect that could certainly help a program at the next level. We want to see how he and Union’s front seven handle Santa Fe’s rushing attack next week.
Highlights
You can make the argument that Union senior Issac Covington Issac Covington 5’11” | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK was the player of the game with his impact on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Covington had a pair of carries on offense and one of them went for a touchdown. Covington didn’t play much offense in the first half of the season but we expect to see more of him on offense as the Redhawks get closer to the playoffs. But on defense, Covington was a monster on that side of the ball. He finished with a sack, an interception and he also forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by the Redhawks and led to more points in the first half. Covington is one of the more underrated stars in the state’s 2024 class and he showed why in the win over Mustang. Union will need him over the next two months.
Union junior running back Jordan Schelling Jordan Schelling 5’10” | 215 lbs | RB Union | 2025 State OK is starting to hit his stride and that’s a dangerous thing for the rest of Class 6A-1. In the first five games of the season, Schelling had three rushing touchdowns and no game with more than one touchdown. But in the last two games, including Friday night’s win over Mustang, Schelling has six touchdowns on the ground with back to back games of three rushing touchdowns. Schelling ended up being a workhorse back on the night. He finished the night with 24 carries for 88 yards and the three touchdowns. Now, as we head into week eight, we get a monster match-up featuring junior running backs that are playing outstanding football. And with a freshman at quarterback, we expect Schelling to see his workload to go up.
Highlights
Coming into this game, arguably the biggest storyline was the quarterback position as freshman Kason Delgado Kason Delgado 6’0″ | 170 lbs | QB Union | 2027 State OK would start for the injured Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6’0″ | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK on Friday night. And coincidentally, this match-up ended up having freshman quarterbacks playing the majority of the game on both sides. But for Delgado, he was put in a great position to have success on Friday night. He wasn’t asked to do much and he let Union’s run game do the work. Delgado didn’t even attempt a pass until the second quarter. He would finish the contest with nearly 100 yards on 6-11 passing and a touchdown. In the third quarter, Delgado found Jino Boyd Jino Boyd 6’0″ | WR Union | 2024 State OK for a 37-yard completion and it was without a doubt the pass of the night. He passed his first test on Friday night but it’ll get tougher next week.
