At this time last year, Millwood was in the middle of a bounce back season. After a rare season in 2021 where they missed the playoffs, the Falcons returned to the top in Class 2A by making it all the way to the state championship game. They had to settle for the silver trophy in a close game with Washington. But as we head down the stretch of the regular season, the #2 Falcons are once again in a position to contend for the state title. This week, they have their toughest test of the district slate when they host #8 Oklahoma Christian School. In this practice report, we take a look at the Falcons, how they’ve gotten here and this week’s opponent.
Millwood comes into this week at 6-1 with the only blemish coming in the season opener against 3A’s top-ranked and defending champion Heritage Hall. The Falcons weren’t at full strength in that 47-24 loss and they have slowly but surely gotten there over the last month. They’ve won six in a row and have looked dominant at times and have taken care of business in the other moments. This week, they face an OCS team that has been outstanding.
Under first year head coach Tanner Roof, the Saints have been lights out and they’ve really taken their game to another level when district play began. OCS took care of business in the first three games but they have been dominant against district opponents. The closest district game was a 42-point win on the road against Hennessey. The Saints are led by a senior quarterback that has yet to make a mistake. One big key for Millwood Friday will be to put OCS in uncomfortable and unfamiliar situations. For Millwood, the playoffs feel like they begin this week because the winner of this showdown will all but lock up the district title.
Below, we take a look at four standouts for Millwood that should have an impact on Friday’s game with OCS. These aren’t the only players to watch but they certainly have our attention. It should be noted that sophomore quarterback CJ Turnbull CJ Turnbull 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Millwood | 2026 State OK is not featured on this breakdown because he was featured earlier this week. MILLWOOD PLAYERS TO WATCH
We can’t write about Millwood linebacker Cameron Carter Cameron Carter 6’1″ | LB Millwood | 2025 State OK without talking about the first time we noticed him. Maybe one day we’ll not mention it but Carter’s breakout moment for us was in that title game against Washington. He was an absolute problem and on that day, he looked like one of the best linebackers in the state. It’s going to be very interesting to see how his recruitment and everything else take off when more colleges start to notice him. He is a physical player that finds a way to get into the backfield. We know the Millwood coaches are high on Carter and he’ll play a big role against OCS this week.
About 18 months ago, Millwood junior Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6’4″ | WR Douglass | 2025 State OK was considered the top basketball prospect in the state and nobody was even considering him as a football prospect. Fast forward to this week and he’s an OU football commit, one of the top football prospects in the class and arguably the best wide receiver in Class 2A. There is no doubt that Nickens is one of the more naturally gifted athletes in the state, but there’s much more to him than that. His ball skills are some of the best that we’ve seen and when he’s on the field, there’s a chance to see fireworks on every snap. And we know he’s hungry to lead Millwood back to Edmond.
Out of the four Millwood standouts in this portion of the article, sophomore running back Lemar Davis Lemar Davis 5’8″ | 150 lbs | RB Deer Creek | 2026 State OK was the unknown of the group heading into this season. Davis got our attention in week five when he ran for nearly 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just 14 carries. Davis gives the Falcons a burst at the running back position and is enjoying a breakout season. In that week five game, the Falcons had to overcome some adversity with injuries and Davis made sure the offense didn’t miss a step when he was on the field. While he might have been an unknown back in August, that’s not the case anymore.
Highlights
In our opinion, there aren’t many two-way players better than Millwood’s Micho Lavine Micho Lavine 6’3″ | 210 lbs | ATH Millwood | 2024 State OK and that’s talking about in Class 2A and in the state, regardless of class. Wherever Lavine lines up on offense, and there’s been a few different positions, he’s made an impact. On the defensive side of the ball, he’s an absolute nightmare to deal with and he combines with Carter to give Millwood a very strong front seven. Lavine missed most of his sophomore year and came back strong last year, only to get hurt in the state title game. We didn’t get a chance to see him against Heritage Hall but it appears that he’s back and stronger than ever.
