All Eyes On The 918
Anytime you have Tulsa perennial powers Broken Arrow, Jenks, Owasso and Union facing off against one another, that’s going to headline the week of football in Oklahoma. And when those games live up to the hype, it’s just another notch in the belt of the 918 success in football. While everyone in 6A-1 is chasing Bixby and the Spartans were dismantling an out of state opponent, Union hosted Broken Arrow and Owasso played host to Jenks. Both games would have very interesting second half performances and neither game really played out the way anyone expected heading in.
First, Owasso bounced back from the week zero loss to Bixby with a 34-28 victory over Jenks, handing the Trojans their second loss in a row after they were upset by Edmond Santa Fe last week. But that final score doesn’t indicate how this game played out for the first three quarters. The Rams were on fire offensively and senior quarterback Knox Dyson Knox Dyson 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Owasso | 2024 State OK had one of the best games of his career. Dyson’s connection with fellow seniors Deuce Chalk Deuce Chalk 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Owasso | 2024 State OK and was a big reason why the Rams jumped out to a 34-7 lead over the Trojans after three quarters. But Jenks would climb back into this game and make it a fight in the final 12 minutes. But the rally would fall short and Owasso would improve to 1-1 on the season.
At Union, the #2 Redhawks found themselves down 17-14 at halftime to Broken Arrow. Union didn’t panic and came out and shut out the Tigers in the second half to win 27-17, setting up a rare showdown in week two where Union is 2-0 and rival Jenks is 0-2. Union junior quarterback Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK was outstanding once again as the Redhawks dominated the final two quarters. Reisig threw for more than 300 yards for the second straight week and had four touchdowns on the night. We added Reisig to our Player Of The Year watchlist on Friday and he backed up the hype again on Friday night.
Class A Gets A Shake Up
We already released the updated rankings heading into week two but the class that got the biggest shake up was Class A. Wynnewood fell to Valliant 46-26 in a match-up featuring some of the better running backs in the state. Stroud also lost to Chandler 26-6 but the Tigers expect to bounce back just like they did a year ago. But neither of those were as big as when top-ranked Colcord fell to Kansas 27-20 on Thursday night.
Colcord turned the ball over five times and you aren’t going to be able to win many games when that happens. Kansas would score the game-winning touchdown with 8 seconds left in the game when Seneca Steele Seneca Steele 6'4" | 195 lbs | QB Kansas | 2025 State OK found Scrappy Glass Scrappy Glass 5'8" | ATH Kansas | 2024 State OK for a 15-yard touchdown. Steele is one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the state and he showed it on Thursday by helping lead his team to a win over Class A’s top-ranked team. With the loss, Colcord dropped to #3 in the rankings while Hominy now sits in the top spot.
Last Minute Heroics
Kansas stunning Colcord in the final minute wasn’t the only game in week one that had some late minute heroics. We got to see several of the marquee games go down to the wire and they weren’t decided until the final minute and in some cases, the final seconds. We had a pair of 5A programs knock off ranked 6A-2 squads and Edmond Memorial bounced back from a week zero loss with a big win over Deer Creek.
Edmond Memorial junior quarterback David McComb David McComb 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Edmond Memorial | 2025 State OK had an outstanding night on Friday night. He became the school’s all time leading passer, he had a career-high 462 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. But no touchdown was bigger than his connection with Levi Peck with just 16 seconds left to give Edmond Memorial the 34-31 victory. We talked about this match-up earlier in the week as one that features two of the best 2025 quarterbacks in the state. On Friday night, it was McComb and the Bulldogs on top.
Claremore jumped into the Class 5A top ten heading into week two after they went on the road and knocked off 6A-2’s #6 Bartlesville 28-27. The Bruins were led by their star running back PJ Wallace PJ Wallace 6'1" | RB Muskogee | 2025 State OK and he put the Bruins up 27-21 with four minutes to play but the PAT was blocked and that opened the door for Claremore. With 36 seconds left, Claremore scored on a 19-yard touchdown run from Micah Teel. The Zebras would convert on the PAT attempt and Claremore would leave Bartlesville with a massive win in their season opener.
After Sapulpa came out on the short end of a shootout with rival Sand Springs in week zero, the Chieftains had to claw back to knock off Tahlequah. Marco Smith Marco Smith 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB Sapulpa | 2024 State OK would score his fourth touchdown of the night with just 19 seconds left to give the Chieftains a 41-38 victory. The Chieftains trailed 28-12 at halftime and then 31-20 heading into the final quarter. And if you think we’ve seen this before. We did last season. Smith would score the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to stun Tahlequah last season.
