Semifinal game with the winner advancing to play in the championship game against Bixby. Both teams came out and gave everything they had, to the point to where this game went into six overtimes. Owasso carried a 13-0 lead into halftime and Union responded to tie it up at 13-13 to go into overtime. Owasso had a trick play 2-point conversion fail that prevented them from having a 14-0 lead going into halftime, then Owasso blocked an extra point attempt in the second half. That is how the score fell to 13-13. The final score was 50-47 in 6 overtimes, with Owasso winning.
Grayson Tempest Grayson Tempest 5’11” | WR Union | 2023 State OK came up with a ton of big plays and was a key factor in them being in this game. He was lethal both running the ball and receiving. He came up with a 12 yard reception along the sideline, a tough catch that was for two yards, a great catch along the sidelines (which was wiped away due to a penalty), and some other nice catches. His best catch accounted for 25 yards. On the ground, he had a good run for eight yards (which was just shy of the first down), a three yard carry, and several other carries for positive gains. His best play of the night was actually him completing a pass to the quarterback for a receiving touchdown on a trick play. He was a swiss army knife for them, showing he can be utilized in a multitude of ways.
Highlights
Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6’0″ | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK looked good for his team and showed that he is one of the best sophomore quarterbacks in the state for a reason. He showed to be lethal with the playaction, throwing the defense off several times with it. He showed the ability to get out of the pocket and take off if nothing is there. He rarely forced a pass and showed good throw power and solid accuracy. He had a great pass for 27 yards, another one for 25 yards, one for 16 yards, and one for 12 yards. Those are just some of them that I have written down. He completed passes like these several times throughout the game. There were a few times that he scrambled and threw a nice pass on the run for five to ten yards. One play that impressed me was not for a big gain, but with what he did. The pocket started to break down and he scrambled. There was nothing open and so he was directing traffic while on the run. As soon as his teammate had an ounce of space, he fired a bullet into the pocket of the receiver for a four yard gain. Outside of this, he showed the ability to take off and run. On one run, he juked a defender and gained 12 yards. One of the most notable plays of the night for him came on a trick play. He ended up catches a touchdown with the defender on his back from about ten yards out. His play was impressive and kept Union in this game.
Issac Covington Issac Covington 5’11” | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK is who I believe was the most valuable player (MVP) for Union last night. He contributed and got it done on both sides of the ball. His team was down 13-0 in the third quarter until he came up with a big pick six for a 39 yard interception return. He came up with some tackles throughout the game, as well. On offense, he was unstoppable when it got to overtime. He had an eight yard carry, two yard carry, 21 yard carry, 16 yard gain (which included a spin move to pick up an extra five yards) and several others in regulation. In overtime, he feasted like a Thanksgiving buffet. In 2OT, he had a seven yard run to get to the one yard line. This was then followed by a one yard touchdown run. In 3OT, he had a six yard touchdown run. The 4OT was the same story: six yard run, three yard run, and it was topped off by a one yard touchdown run to tie it. Almost a mirror image in the 5OT: eight yard run, one yard run, followed by a one yard touchdown run. He ended with a pick six in the third quarter, as well as four overtime touchdowns. It was spectacular to watch him dominate both sides of the ball and keep his team in it.
Bryce Ashlock Bryce Ashlock 6’0″ | LB Union | 2023 State OK was a defensive anchor for Union. He was an essential reason why Owasso only had 13 points in regulation and did not score in the second half. He has solid size at 6’1, and utilized it well. He was a tackle machine. I recorded seven tackles for him, but it felt like he had more. He was always there interrupting Owasso’s plans on offense. He provided good coverage and was a consistent tackler. On special teams, he provided good punt coverage on a punt and was able to down the ball. It felt like as soon as the ball went up in the air, he was there to hinder the other team’s plans. He was impressive for Union in this game.
