Every single Thursday on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’ll take a look at five players that you need to know about heading into the week of games. Week four features several great match-ups across the state. Week four’s match-ups are all about district play opening up. After the first few weeks of the season, now the games start counting towards playoff seeding in November. Be sure to check back every Thursday for the Players To Watch feature and then again every Sunday for our Top Performers!
Hominy continues to climb up the Class A rankings as the Bucks are off to a great start this season. We knew that Hominy had a chance to be a dark horse in the Class A title conversation because of the return of their dynamic quarterback Jaxon Woods Jaxon Woods 6’0″ | ATH Hominy | 2024 State OK . But after the first few weeks of the season, we think it’s safe to say that not only is Hominy not a dark horse, but a real contender. And Woods is one of the top players in Class A right now as a junior. Woods has been outstanding throwing and running the ball in the first few weeks of the season. In their biggest win to date, Woods put up massive numbers as they took down rival Pawhuska in impressive fashion. Now, Woods and the Bucks open up district play on Friday night and this is arguably the toughest district in Class A this season. Hominy goes on the road to face a run-heavy Pawnee team, who’s coming off a shootout win last week.
The Bixby Spartans are 3-0 and have extended their winning streak to 52 consecutive games and on Friday they hit the road to face Norman North. One of the top players so far on Bixby’s offense has been senior running back Jersey Robb Jersey Robb 6’2″ | 200 lbs | ATH Bixby | 2023 State OK . The Spartan offense have several weapons on the offensive side of the ball but Robb is that consistent presence at running back that the Spartans can trust to be a workhorse when they need him. And that’s bad news for Norman North as they attempt to be the first team since Jenks in the 2018 season opener to beat the Spartans. Norman North is coming off an upset loss to Yukon, where the Millers were able to gash the Timberwolves with a strong running game. Bixby will come into this game looking to remain incredibly balanced on the offensive side of the ball but there’s no doubt that Robb has to be excited about the match-up and will look to rack up some numbers on Friday.
In the top Class 2A game this week, Eufaula goes on the road to take on Spiro to open up district play. Eufaula has been playing good football after dropping their season opener to Vian. The Ironheads have looked great on the offensive side of the ball over the last two weeks and they’ll look to keep that momentum going on the road this week. Spiro is coming off a loss to Muldrow in a game where the Bulldogs were able to dominate the ground game. Eufaula will look to torch Spiro through the air with one of the top quarterbacks in the 2023 class with Luke Adcock Luke Adcock 6’3″ | 205 lbs | QB Eufaula | 2023 State OK . We’ve been saying this for over a year now after watching the film and seeing his production. Adcock is a dynamic quarterback who can make just about every throw in the books. Adcock can also tuck the ball and run it and is a very physical runner. Despite losing one of the top playmakers in Khelil Deere from last year, Adcock still has this offense humming.
Owasso bounced back from their 0-2 start with an impressive road win over Broken Arrow in week two. The Rams fell to Bixby and Jenks to kick off their season but the Rams are looking to hit the reset button as they begin district play on Friday night. Senior quarterback Mason Willingham Mason Willingham 6’1″ | QB Owasso | 2023 State OK and the Rams welcome in top-ranked Union to open up the district slate. Willingham has shown tremendous growth as a quarterback over the last 12 months and late in the season last year, he earned the nod as the starter. This year, he’s been the no-doubt QB1 of the Rams. Willingham and the Rams are still trying to find their identity on the offensive side of the ball without their top playmaker in wide receiver Cole Adams Cole Adams 6’0″ | WR Owasso | 2023 State OK , who is a top five overall prospect in the state’s 2023 class. Willingham is just as dangerous on the ground as he is in the air and he’ll look to take advantage of that skillset against a very aggressive and talented Union defense.
Arguably the most dynamic athlete on this week’s breakdown is Bethany senior standout Taylor Heim Taylor Heim 6’4″ | 185 lbs | ATH Bethany | 2023 State OK . He’s one of the most productive athletes in the state’s 2023 class and college coaches are also starting to take notice. Heim has thrown for three touchdowns, run for two touchdowns and also caught two touchdowns so far this season as he’s the ultimate X-Factor on the offensive side of the ball. And as if that wasn’t enough, Heim is also an impactful player on the defensive side of the ball as he leads the team with four interceptions on the season. Heim and Bethany are off to a great 3-0 start and are coming off a bye week in week three. They’ve rested up for their district opener on Friday night when they host 4A powerhouse Tuttle. These two teams are the top teams within the district at this point of the season. It’s not crazy to think that the district championship could be decided on Friday night.
