Continue ReadingNorman topped Mustang last Friday 62-58 in an early candidate for thriller of the year. Below is a list of a few of the most outstanding players from the game:
Tristen Russell Tristen Russell 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Mustang | 2023 State OK | Mustang ’23 |
5’11″ QB | Not committed |
Russell connected with Jacobe Johnson Jacobe Johnson 6'4" | DB Mustang | 2023 State OK thrice, Keegan Bass Keegan Bass 5'9" | 175 lbs | WR Mustang | 2023 State OK twice, and Andre Dollar Andre Dollar 6'4" | TE Mustang | 2022 State OK once for touchdowns in perhaps the best passing performance we’ve seen in a loss in recent memory.
The 5-foot-11-inch junior completed 21-of-29 passes for 328 yards and six touchdowns through the air Friday night in a valiant effort against the Norman Tigers. His timing was impeccable, especially on down-field passes, where the Broncos really flourished utilizing their weapons.
Russell was also remarkably accurate; even an impressive stat line like 21-of-29 didn’t do his performance justice as a couple of his incompletions were near-perfect passes that were dropped.
The best of his throws, in our opinion, was his touchdown strike to Dollar in the third quarter, in which Russell felt pressure rather quickly as the pocket collapsed. With a pair of defenders closing in on either shoulder, Russell launched a clean, timely ball down-field to Dollar, out of reach of the secondary. But this was just one of his many great passes on the night:

Keegan Bass Keegan Bass 5'9" | 175 lbs | WR Mustang | 2023 State OK | Mustang ’23 |
5’9″ WR | Not committed |
Bass was like Whataburger on Friday night: always open.
The junior made his impact all over the field, recording 173 all-purpose yards in the loss, including two receiving touchdowns and one kickoff returned for a touchdown to open the third quarter.
His kickoff return, in fact, gave the Broncos the lead in the second half and, really, made it a game at that point. Bass is quick, shifty, and heady on the field. He bursts into routes and cuts sharply out of breaks. He has good hands, as well, and rarely takes an opportunity to score for granted.
Jacobe Johnson Jacobe Johnson 6'4" | DB Mustang | 2023 State OK | Mustang ’23 |
6’3″ WR/DB | Not committed |
When the Broncos needed a big play, Johnson responded.
The two-sport D-I prospect had one of his best games to-date, catching seven passes for 124 and three receiving touchdowns. At least three of those catches, from the perspective of the press box, were hard-earned, and hard-earned like you wouldn’t believe. Johnson was double covered on down-field plays almost every time:

And even when he wasn’t double covered, Johnson still had to break tackles, shift defenders, and claw his way into the end zone, but he did just that:

It’s safe to say that Norman didn’t have much of an answer for Johnson.
Other standouts
- Andre Dollar Andre Dollar 6'4" | TE Mustang | 2022 State OK , Sr. | 6’5″ H | Oregon commit — If not for the excellence of Bass and Johnson, Dollar would have easily been the best receiver on the field, not to target on his back that draws defenders to him and away from his teammates. Dollar has exactly what every D-I school wants out of a “Bronco” back; he’s strong, quick, had great hands, and takes pride in his ability to block. He caught one touchdown and a 2-point conversion.
