MARK THE CALENDARS
September 17 - Stillwater AT Bixby
The 2020 football season saw plenty of games and marquee match-up’s become victims to the Covid-19 pandemic and one of the biggest cancellations came in week three of last year when the Bixby AT Stillwater game was cancelled. This was supposed to be a rematch of the 2018 and 2019 state championship games and a potential preview of another playoff meeting between these two rivals. We will see them renew their rivalry in week three this year and both teams will be breaking in new faces at some key positions. Both teams expect to make a trip to Wantland Stadium in December and the biggest question we have about this match-up will be if this week three battle is only part one.
October 8th - Bixby AT Choctaw
If the preseason rankings hold by the time we get to week six, it will be #1 Bixby traveling to face #2 Choctaw in a rematch of last year’s state championship game. As mentioned above, Bixby plays a brutal non-district schedule and they’ll certainly be battle-tested by the time they get to this point of the season. These two teams are the favorites to make it back to Wantland Stadium and it was Choctaw that gave Bixby the most problems during their championship run a year ago. These teams are very familiar with one another and we’ll get a possible championship preview before we even get to November. It goes without saying, but the winner here will be in the driver’s seat for the district crown.
October 29th - Midwest City AT Stillwater
For the first time in a few years, Stillwater isn’t the favorite in their district heading into the season. Midwest City is ranked above Stillwater in our preseason rankings and is our preseason pick to capture the district title on the westside of 6A-2. However, the district will more than likely come down to the last three weeks of the season when Midwest City, Putnam City North and Stillwater all play each other during that three-week stretch. If one team is able to go 2-0 during that span, they’ll lock up the district championship. All three teams are very even going into the 2021 season but the edge right now is slightly leaned towards Midwest City. However, we think this district will be very competitive throughout the year and it’s been a few years since we could say that coming into a season.

NOTABLE STORYLINES
Bixby’s Last Dance
We wrote about this in the Bixby Team Preview back in July and it is now confirmed that the 2021 season will be Bixby’s last in 6A-2. This has been a community that has grown and grown and the Spartans will begin playing and competing in 6A-1 starting in 2022 and it is unlikely that they will return to 6A-2. The Spartans have dominated 6A-2 since it’s creation in 2014. In the seven seasons, Bixby has made it to the championship game in every year and has captured six of the seven gold balls. Shout out to Booker T Washington on the 2017 title. Now, 2021 is Bixby’s last dance in 6A-2 and they’ll look to capture their fourth straight state title and leave 6A-2 with seven out of eight championships. Nothing else can be said except that Bixby would be considered one of the greatest dynasties of all time. And if they continue that success and dominance into 6A-1, the legend will only continue. Not only does Bixby have a chance at a fourth straight title, they also have a chance to make state history. They come into the season with a 36-game winning streak and the state record for 11-man football is 48 straight wins by Wagoner. Another undefeated season would give Bixby 49 straight wins and give them the record as they head into 6A-1. They would also become the first 11-man team in state history to finish three straight seasons with a perfect record. It’s never been done. So once again, all eyes will be on the Bixby Spartans throughout the 2021 season. Can they break the record? Will they go out on top once again? Can anyone stop them before they head off to 6A-1? All of those storylines will make for a very exciting season.
Booker T Washington’s Depth
As you see with the 6A-2 Team, Booker T Washington certainly isn’t lacking talent as they head into the 2021 season. The Hornets lead the class with seven selections on the 6A-2 team with Choctaw right behind them at six. However, one of the main things that held them back last year was injuries and they can’t afford to have any injuries this year as the overall numbers are severely down heading into the season. On offense, they bring back their starting quarterback and some serious talent at the skill positions but a big question and arguably the biggest question will be around the offensive line. Then on defense, they have skill littered throughout the three levels of the defense. They’re incredibly talented in the secondary but they need to remain healthy. During the spring, Booker T Washington had less than 30 players suited up during spring drills and team camp. Granted, they were missing their best player in [player_tooltip player_id="38668" first="Gentry" last="Williams"], who is now at 100 percent after a knee injury ended his junior season. But if the Hornets are healthy and the offensive line questions are answered, this team is without a doubt the most talented team in 6A-2.
New Look Stillwater
We mentioned above that it’s been a few years since Stillwater wasn’t the big favorite in their district. A big reason behind that is all the new faces we’ll see on the Pioneers heading into this season. The first and most obvious name that Stillwater has to replace is star running back [player_tooltip player_id="38521" first="Qwontrel" last="Walker"]. The dynamic running back was one of the best in Oklahoma over the last three seasons and now Stillwater will have to find a new player to lean on in the backfield. And for the second straight year, the Pioneers will have a new face in that backfield at the quarterback position but it will be a familiar name. [player_tooltip player_id="38540" first="Caleb" last="Allen"] was the guy last year but this year it’s junior [player_tooltip player_id="157517" first="Gage" last="Gundy"]. His older brother Gunnar was a three-year starter for the Pioneers and put up monster numbers in the passing game. All indications are that Gage has the chance to be just as good as his older brother. The Pioneers will have some new faces on defense as well but the bright spot is returning linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="38676" first="Gabe" last="M Brown"], who will be a three-year starter at the position and is arguably the best linebacker in Oklahoma today. So while Stillwater will certainly have some new faces and potential stars breaking out this fall, the Pioneers are still one of the top teams in 6A-2 and it’s somewhat expected that they’ll be reloading this fall, not rebuilding.
