Expert Analysis

Lamarcus Army showed exactly why he carries such a high profile in Michigan’s 2028 class. Ranked as the state’s top athlete and a Top 10 overall prospect with major college offers as a sophomore, he left little doubt after a dominant day one performance and weekend as a whole. GJ Speed leaned on him as their primary playmaker, targeting him frequently, and he delivered with a patient release, elite burst, and real explosiveness off the line and in his route breaks. Army’s speed and quickness were evident both in his routes and after the catch, where he consistently stressed defenders.

Army is one of many Cass Tech underclassmen taking the field to defend their State Title. Primarily a safety, Army has the tall task of defending DCC’s elite receiving core. The Gash brothers are excellent downfield threats, but watch the tape, and you’ll see that Army is smart enough and fast enough to defend anyone. Plus, he’s good at tacking in the open field. Good at wrapping up and driving the ballcarrier backwards.
Whether Army is defending the middle third or playing press man, I feel that he’ll perform well. I confidently consider Army a future Power 4 college football player.

I could name a number of Cass Tech players here.
Army has impressed me throughout the season. Specifically, I loved what I saw in his week 1 matchup versus Toledo Central Catholic.
For one, Army is as competitive as they come. FIts the Cass Tech culture extremely well.
Second, Army is a dang good football player. He’s able to get into a WRs nose and play press-man, or drop back into a zone and cover a ton of ground. An underrated aspect to Army’s game is his tackling. He’s quite good as a tackler and way more physical than most DBs. Tomorrow against Fordson, I’m expecting Army to have a huge game.

I really liked what I saw from Army in week 1. Poised, good man coverage, and it’s obvious he’s extremely competitive. No doubt that Army’s run-stopping improved in his game against Grandville. This week, I’d love to see Army play a complete game on defense. He’ll have his man coverage opportunities, and he’ll absolutely have a chance to make solo tackles in the open field. Huge player defensively.

I watched Army throughout the first quarter.
In short, Army is a phenomenal press man corner. Not many high school corners are capable of consistent success in press man. Super impressed with Army’s physicality and footwork when playing up close. He also did extremely well in the second half in a more zone-heavy gameplan.
Coverage skills are through the roof. Army still needs to grow as a run stopper. I thought he could have been much more aggressive in stopping the run, swarming to the football in general.

Another excellent talent from Cass Tech who earned Varsity time as a freshman.
His tape is mostly what you’d expect. Army served as a solid role player, was a decent run stopper, and had a few flashes in pass coverage. Army’s best highlights come from the tail end of the tape- 1:55 shows a great read and near-INT. 2:05 demonstrates an ability to hit hard and break up passes. I like Army’s upside as a free safety. Already with plus athletic ability, his Friday Night production should match his offers very soon.
