Early on in its 42-6 victory at Liberty on Friday night, Johnston disrupted the Lightning offense with a combination of push inside and speed off of the edge on the defensive front. Bousum was a noticeable contributor to the latter. The sophomore end harassed the quarterback and stood up against the run, too. It was an impressive combination of skills for the 10th-grader. The motor runs fast, Bousum operating with a tempo that puts opponents on their heels. Strength, advanced technique and violent hands also contribute to the anarchy created. A projectable frame built to fill out and add strength helps give Bousum a sizable ceiling. He’s a prospect lifting his stock with his performance this fall. Expect the colleges to increase their interest moving forward.

was a stud on the Dragon’s freshman team, immediately making his presence known and earning himself several reps on the varsity lineup as well. In limited appearances, Bousum recorded 2.5 tackles, a TFL, and a forced fumble, further exemplifying his flashy explosiveness. A relentless DE who’s fast, twitchy, and has already developed a variety of pass-rush moves for his role, Bousum is impressively refined at the position for his age, proving to constantly find his way into the backfield and disrupt the QB under pressure. Bousum has plenty of time to build some more bulk to match his frame and athleticism, and there’s no telling how much of a problem Bousum will be for opponents when he breaks into the starting lineup on the varsity defense for the Dragons.

Bousum got his feet wet as a freshman for a Johnston squad that won 11 games before falling by a touchdown to Valley in the 5A quarterfinals. He produced two solo tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in limited duty. Contributing in the state’s largest classification as a ninth-grader is notable and bodes well for Bousum’s future. Highlights from the season that can be found on his Hudl page also speak to bright days ahead. In addition to what he showed defensively on the varsity with advanced skills and development, Bousum gives every reason to believe he could end up being a tight end that’s a receiving threat and a productive blocker.
