Helming feels like a prospect who’s stock has the potential to rise significantly on the camp circuit this summer. As it is, he holds an impressive list of reported scholarship offers from Northern Iowa, Illinois State and South Dakota. I watched him compete at the Back 2 Ballin High 7v7 tournament during the middle of April at the UNI-Dome, a potential college home. Helming throws an impressive ball with an easy motion and smooth release. Arm strength isn’t an issue with his ability to zip the ball through tight windows. He also pushes it down the field with power and touch. Helming surveys the field well and is ready to sling it when he finds a throw he likes. I certainly could envision him shining at the FCS level but I wouldn’t put that ceiling on him, either. Last season, he completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,895 yards and 20 touchdowns against just three interceptions. Helming added two scores on the ground. He can move.

is right there in the conversation with Heitland for being one of the best quarterbacks in 5A. With prototypical size, throwing motion and the ability to run, Helming is a gunslinger that has command of the Dragon offense as much as anyone in the CIML.
Completing 130-of-213 passes (61%) for 1,895 yards, 20 touchdowns and just three picks, Helming is a quick decision-maker that can throw strikes, and if he racks up stats early on in the season, he’ll be one to watch when it comes time to hand out this award.

comfortably transitioned into the starting QB role for the Dragons’ last season, proving to hold his own well against some of the toughest contenders in the 5A conference. Helming completed 61% of his passes for 1895 yards, 20 TDs, and 3 INTs while adding 2 rushing TDs. Helming led some thrilling wins last season against several notable big-name teams, including Southeast Polk, Ankeny, Iowa City Liberty, and a playoff win over Ankeny Centennial. Helming was fearless in the pocket, delivering deep strikes with ease and playing well under pressure. With much of the varsity lineup from 2025 returning next season and considering their success against top-ranked opponents, Helming has a real shot of leading Johnston toward making a case for a 5A title in 2026.

lived up to expectations as he quickly found his footing as a viable signal-caller at the 5A level. Helming threw for 1895 yards, 20 TDs, and only 3 INTs while rushing for 2 TDs. Helming has the makings of a gunslinger, with a strong release and cool pocket presence, not being afraid to take some shots. Helming took quite a bit of pressure last season, but he was able to maneuver through the pocket with good footwork while also taking the time to set his feet to improve his accuracy under duress. Johnston will have high expectations entering his senior season as he will look to stand out once again at the toughest conference level in Iowa.

has put together an excellent start to his career with Johnston. Friday night was an excellent showing of that. Finishing the night completing 17-of-19 passes (89.5%) for 216 yards and a touchdown through the air, plus a score on the ground, Helming has begun to establish himself as one of the better quarterbacks in the CIML.
Throwing a tight ball with good mechanics and a solid base, Helming’s passes have some pop to them in addition to the notable accuracy. On one drive in the first half that looked dead in the water after a penalty, Helming converted on 3rd and 16, finding a receiver for 18 yards, exemplifying who he is as a passer. The gunslinger understands the time and situation, and he will bide his time in the pocket, keep his eyes down field and throw the ball that needs to be thrown.
With an offer from Northern Iowa, Helming’s recruitment should continue on an upward trajectory, and hell benefit from camp season this upcoming summer.

Helming completed nine of 10 passes and a touchdown as a sophomore backing up a senior on the varsity. His sophomore highlight video contains varsity and junior varsity clips. Helming gets the ball out quick with zip. He has a knack for throwing on the run with accuracy and does a nice job of feeling the rush. With touch, Helming shows good ball placement. All the tools are present for Helming to enjoy a breakout season in 2025.
