‘s recruitment took a major turn this month. He originally committed to Penn State, but after James Franklin left for Virginia Tech, Peterson reopened his recruitment. Today, he found his new home — committing to the University of North Carolina.
This move continues a clear trend. Since Bill Belichick arrived in Chapel Hill, UNC has become aggressive in New Jersey, and he’s openly praised the state for producing high-level football talent. Now he’s backing that up with action. Peterson marks the second Winslow star the Tar Heels have flipped, reinforcing UNC’s growing footprint in South Jersey.
Peterson brings exactly the type of versatility Belichick has valued for decades. He can play wide receiver and defensive back and contribute across multiple phases without losing impact. Moreover, his length, athleticism, and natural instincts give him a ceiling that few two-way prospects possess.
Ultimately, UNC is landing a high-upside athlete with the kind of flexibility that can shape a roster. Peterson fits the mold of a modern hybrid playmaker — and if he continues developing on both sides of the ball, he has a chance to become a Travis Hunter–type chess piece for the Tar Heels.
I want to thank every school and every coach who recruited me and believed in me throughout this process. I’m very grateful for every opportunity.
With that said, I’m blessed to announce my commitment to the University of North Carolina! #GoHeels🐏 @chillbelton @winslowtwpfb pic.twitter.com/b0FLu5BXwF— Julian Peterson

has been locked in with Penn State for over a year, and it’s easy to see why. At 6’2”, 185, he’s a physical corner who thrives in press coverage. He’s aggressive at the line of scrimmage and isn’t afraid to step up in the run game.
Peterson also makes an impact on offense. He flashes big-play speed and runs with strength after the catch. On special teams, he adds even more value, highlighted by a kick return touchdown last season.
This fall, Peterson gets an early stage to prove himself. Winslow opens with Bergen Catholic, giving him a chance to showcase his versatility against elite competition. Expect him to be one of the most complete players on the field.

is the newest shiny toy they get to deploy. On film Peterson looks like a tall, long corner who drives on the ball well – specifically in the quick game. These breaks allow him break up a number of passes and tip-drill opportunities. As a run defender, Peterson is really good at getting his hands on the man in front of him, shedding the block, and keeping his force responsibility. More than most corners, I thought as though Peterson was physical for his position and is an extremely good tackler who hits/wraps/drives in an elite way. Peterson seems to enjoy the challenge of playing press coverage, as he allows nearly zero separation and stays in the hip pocket of his matchup.
