in game action, he was making the game-clinching interception in the end zone to lock up the 2A-1 state championship. That capped off what was a breakout season for the sophomore cornerback and going back and looking at that film, he was incredibly productive in the title game, in addition to the big play at the end. Templeton has seen his recruitment start to heat up this offseason, picking up a handful of D1 offers following that breakout sophomore season. He’s one of several names returning on this defense that will make them fun to watch.

on the football field, he was celebrating a state championship after coming up with an interception in the end zone to secure the win as time ran out. That was the end of Templeton’s sophomore season, in which he emerged as one of the better defensive backs in Class 2A-1. Between his size and overall athletic ability, Templeton has also had a very solid offseason, getting on the radars of college coaches that recruit Oklahoma. In the spring, Templeton reported his first offer and that should continue this fall as he will be one part of a very talented secondary for the Longhorns. Templeton will go into this season as one of the state’s better cornerbacks.

Derek was one of the standout performers at camp today, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Playing defensive back, he showed strong instincts in coverage, staying disciplined in his leverage and consistently matching receivers step-for-step through routes. He competed confidently in one-on-ones and made several plays on the ball, using good timing and awareness to disrupt timing at the catch point. Derek was offered by UTSA at the end of camp.

Templeton’s big moment came in last season’s 2A State Championship game when he had the game sealing interception against powerhouse Washington. This Sophomore has exceptional footwork and can cover in man or zone. Templeton plays smart, fundamental football. His 4.5 speed gives him the ability to cover deep and get out of his break quickly to make plays. Templeton’s athleticism highlights his technique in flipping his hip and running with defenders. He’s a true ball hawk and with two years left in his high school campaign, he is sure to make some noise in the upcoming season.

Wide receiver is one area where the Longhorns will need some new names to step up in a major way this season. Four of their top five receivers from last season graduated. One player we’re keeping an eye on is

as he heads into his sophomore season. Templeton might be known more for his work on defense right now but he could be a boost to the offensive side of the ball as well. Templeton has good athleticism to go with his 6’2 frame and it wouldn’t surprise us to see him become one of the breakout stars of this season. Templeton has a lot of momentum going right now as he’s had a terrific offseason on the camp circuit.
