The latest 2024 rankings on Prep Redzone Oklahoma were released on Monday with the Top 125 for the state’s 2024 class. Throughout the week, we have been breaking down prospects throughout the rankings. From stock risers and newcomers to breakdowns by positions, it was a busy week! So keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma throughout the week for more on the 2024 class. In this post, we’re putting a spotlight on five of the best defensive backs in the state’s 2024 class. This is a position group that is loaded with cornerbacks and we put a spotlight on several here but there is a strong depth at this position overall as well.
We kick off our breakdown of defensive backs with one of the more productive players at the position over the last few years. Sulphur standout Brytan Gaddy Brytan Gaddy 6’1″ | 165 lbs | DB Sulphur | 2024 State OK is not only a standout on the football field but he’s also shown his athletic abilities on the track as well. Gaddy is definitely a name to keep an eye on moving forward. And we’ve already written a few times in the last two months that Sulphur is a team that we really like heading into the 2023 season with some of the players that they have returning. Gaddy is arguably the biggest playmaker on that team and while he can do a lot of things well on the field, it feels like the best thing he does is play corner in man to man situations. We’re looking forward to seeing what Gaddy’s track times are this spring.

Speaking of track standouts from southern Oklahoma, our next prospect is one that we’ve liked since watching him at the end of his freshman year. Ada’s Damontre Patterson Damontre Patterson 5’10” | 145 lbs | WR Sulphur | 2024 State OK has always been one of the more athletic prospects in the class and this might actually be the last time that Patterson is featured with the defensive backs in the 2024 class. While that was the first spot we watched him excel on the football field, Patterson has become a legitimate Power Five prospect and most of the attention he is getting is actually on the offensive side of the ball. We mentioned Patterson was a track standout and he’s put up some absolutely absurd numbers there so we don’t doubt he can be a next level star when he has the ball in his hands.

The first of two Union standouts on this breakdown is their rising cover corner in Devon Jordan Devon Jordan 6’1″ | DB Union | 2024 State OK following a breakout junior season. Around this time last year, we started following Jordan after watching him playing 7v7 in the offseason with his travel team 918 Elite. It was pretty easy to see a lot of potential there as he was one of the absolute best ball hawks we saw during the 2022 offseason. He seemed to always find his way to the football and would make a play. Jordan then enjoyed plenty of success for Union during the 2022 season and he recently witnessed his recruitment start to take off. Union loses some good pieces in the secondary but with Jordan and our next prospect returning, the Redhawks should be just fine on the defensive side of the ball.
The next 2024 prospect from Union that you need to know about is Issac Covington Issac Covington 5’11” | 190 lbs | ATH Union | 2024 State OK after an outstanding junior campaign where he showcased his versatility. All of the prospects on this breakdown excelled at the cornerback spot so far but Covington has been a player that can play multiple spots within the secondary and he had a strong junior season in his first year in Union’s defense. In fact, the Redhawks also used him on the offensive side of the ball as a running back and Covington was a big part of their success in the semifinal game that went to multiple overtimes with Owasso. But Covington should be a really good safety prospect when it comes to the next level but we could also see him moving around and playing a few different positions because there is a very high game IQ there.
Another prospect that can get it done on both sides of the ball but we prefer him on defense. Heritage Hall standout Jordyn Harris Jordyn Harris 6’1″ | 165 lbs | DB Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK is an outstanding cornerback and he showed that throughout the season with the state champion Chargers. Harris should also explode this fall as one of the top playmakers on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver. But like some of the other two-way stars in this class, we like Harris for what he can do on the defensive side of the ball. He was simply not tested very often last season and for good reason when you look at the speed and overall skill he plays the position with. It was around this time last year that we first found out about Harris and he’s continued to improve his game ever since and the arrow continues to point up.
