August 26th – Washington AT Vian
The first of two massive top five clashes in non-district play happens here in week zero as #1 Washington travels east to face off with #5 Vian. We could very well see these two meeting up in the playoffs and it will more than likely be later in the postseason. Both teams have excellent run games and will lean on those rushing attacks coming into this one. Both teams are really challenging themselves in non-district play so it’s no surprise that they’re opening the season against one another. This is a great way to see where each Class 2A powerhouse is at early in the year.
September 9th – Beggs AT Rejoice Christian
The other marquee non-district game will take place in week two as #2 Beggs goes north to Owasso to face off with #3 Rejoice Christian in a match-up that could be a semifinal or even a championship preview. These two faced off last season and things got out of hand in terms of offense. Beggs won an absolute shootout and Rejoice had simply no answer for the Golden Demons running the ball at will in 2021. Beggs still has a potent rushing attack but Rejoice has an explosive offense as well. Another shootout could be brewing here.
September 30th – Jones AT Crossings Christian
The first of several showdowns in this district features two top ten teams with Jones traveling to clash with Crossings Christian. This district has the chance to be the most competitive in Class 2A with three teams coming in the top ten with Jones, Crossings and Bethel. Several other teams in that district like Chandler, Kellyville and Luther could make things very interesting. But with Jones and Crossings being the top two ranked teams within this district, we could very well see the district title be decided right here in week five.
September 30th – Victory Christian AT Beggs
Another big week five game that will definitely have playoff implications is Beggs hosting Victory Christian. The Conquerors got a huge win over Beggs in week ten last year that allowed them to capture the district championship. Beggs will definitely have that in mind as they welcome in the Conquerors in week five. This game will have a little more juice to it as well as Victory’s former head coach Ben Palmer is now an assistant coach at Beggs. It’s only week five but this will have a big playoff feel to it when they square off.
November 4th – Rejoice Christian AT Pawhuska
We have to wait until week ten to see this district showdown between Rejoice Christian as they hit the road to take on 2A newcomer Pawhuska. The Huskies have been one of the top teams in Class A over the last three seasons but they’re moving up to Class 2A this fall and immediately become a contender. The district championship could very well be on the line and it will all come down to week ten. It will feel like the playoffs have started early with this match-up. A game that features two of the best 2023 quarterbacks in the state.
Notable Storylines
A Split Is Coming…
Earlier this year, the Oklahoma football coaches suggested and voted on Class 2A and Class A be split into two divisions. Each class would have two divisions consisting of 32 teams instead of one class of 64 teams. This won’t happen until the 2024 season as the split will happen during the next redistricting shuffle. This does two things for Class 2A moving forward. It makes the playoffs less of a gauntlet. It’s never really made much sense how the smallest schools in the state end up playing the most playoff games. But with a split in Class 2A moving forward, that will effectively end what has been the most competitive class in Oklahoma over the last several years. Ever since Class 3A went back to having just 32 teams in their class, 2A has been the most competitive class year in and year out. This year and next year will be no different as we expect this year to be completely wide open. While you have your favorites like Washington, Beggs and Rejoice Christian. There are plenty of other teams out there that are ready to make a run that are outside of the preseason top ten. We’ve seen it every year and there’s no reason to think it won’t happen again this fall.
Washington Gunning For Gold
Washington comes into this season as the preseason #1 team in Class 2A and they’re hungrier than ever to finish off the 2022 season with that #1 ranking. The Warriors have made two consecutive trips to the state championship game and each time they had to settle for the silver ball. They lost a shootout to Metro Christian in 2020 and then fell short in a defensive battle to Marlow last year. We thought going into that 2021 title game that Washington would come out with the gold ball and until a turnover late in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Warriors might be able to pull it off. But back to back runner up finishes has this Washington team extremely hungry as they head into the 2022 season and this isn’t just a hungry team that doesn’t have firepower. They are the real deal and have legitimate weapons on both sides of the ball. Washington comes in as a big favorite to capture the Class 2A title but as we mentioned in the above storyline, this is Class 2A, and anything can happen during that five week stretch in November.
