Dawson has two single game cutups available on Hudl, both of which have him competing against elite national level competition. I’m excited to see him put together a first three game tape and expect to see him in person this coming Friday night.
I decided to peek into his best reps against DeMatha, which gives me about a minute and a half of production from his defensive back spot. Dawson understands when to pass off in breaking routes to teammates and shows a good understanding of zone coverage concepts. He is a knifer as a tackler and looks comfortable working from the slot. He is also more than athletic enough to keep up with slot receivers in man coverage if need be. He is the type of athlete who could contribute both ways and on special teams, including at wide receiver, if the coaching staff deemed it necessary.
Dawson plays well and looks comfortable when everything is kept in front of him. Eyes on the quarterback, eyes on his target and ready to come downhill. He is an impact player when he can see and understand his reads developing in front of him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play well at safety, either, as he looks like a great backend communicator and does a great job limiting yards after the catch. There are even some single high reps on tape, which was interesting considering I mentioned his potential at safety before seeing those snaps.
Dawson is currently ranked as a Division I capable defensive back, and I don’t expect any drop in his ranking.
You can learn a lot about players when their team is losing by a large margin. Dawson was making a number of tackles down in the box against Don Bosco Prep before the game got out of hand. Most of the tackles were at or near the line of scrimmage, showing that he’s not afraid to put his nose in on the action. DBP didn’t really try to test Roman Catholic down the middle of the field in the passing game.
