Expert Analysis
Matt Morrow | Prep Redzone Scout
Committed to Charlotte, Josh is probably one of the most heralded players in this game from a talent/recruiting perspective, as he had any number of schools that he could have played college football at on the next level. Josh shows excellent speed and reactive ability from his defensive back position, and excels in both man and zone coverage. He has helped the Mustangs bounce back this season to become a title contender in the 8A playoff conversation.

Josh has been one of my favorite defensive backs to watch on film for the last couple of years in the Charlotte Metro Area. He is a very smooth player who really excels in space. In zone coverage, Josh has some impressive range and gets off the hash very well. Josh is also a talented basketball player, and that agility shows when he comes down and covers receivers in man coverage. Josh is also a good tackler in space, taking smart angles and showing the speed to run plays down that go away from him as well. He is another player with multiple Division 1 offers to play college football and should flourish on the next level with his skill set.

An All-Conference selection this past season, Josh has seen some recent recruiting attention, picking up offers from both Appalachian State and Charlotte in the last 24 hours! They have to love the same things we like about him – first off, his physical frame is the prototypical size you would want for a defensive back. Josh previously had offers from East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, West Virginia, and Miami (Ohio). Josh is also a very good basketball player, reflective of his overall elite athletic ability. Josh is a rangy defensive back, with an elite ability to cover a lot of space in a short period of time with excellent speed and springy athleticism.

Josh is a two sport athlete who also plays basketball as a guard for the Mustangs. The athleticism definitely translates well onto the football field. Josh’s size makes him an excellent prototypical safety prospect. Josh has received recruiting attention and offers, as he currently has offers from West Virginia, Miami (Ohio), and East Carolina. When you look at him on film, Josh is one of those safeties that can come down and cover slot receivers in man coverage, but also can excel in playing center field, reading the quarterback’s eyes, and making plays on the ball as a result. Josh also shows skills to cover receivers on the outside as well. A versatile DB like Josh will always be in high demand on the next level.

There are very few true ball-hawking safeties that can still be trusted to be left on ann island at corner, but Hines can do both of those things and has the full confidence of Myers Park’s staff. He’s got the athleticism, size and versatility to be a true FBS prospect and as that secondary continues to get more experienced, he will likely develop into a pure heavy-hitting safety with ball skills.
