Howell shines among Broken Bow-McAlester stand outs

Football season kicked off with Week 0 and among the games PrepRedzone attended was 4A contender Broken Bow traveling to face 5A McAlester. Broken Bow started the game with a flea flicker for a huge gain. Which set the tone for the night and a 45-21 win. OU commit [player_tooltip player_id='1525562' first='Greydon' last='Howell'] was the heart of the Savages' offensive explosion, but it was a full team effort that allowed them to control the game throughout.    Howell was simply a cut above the rest of the players on the field. Led an opening drive touchdown that started with the lefty flicking a bomb off a flea flicker. Then a few moments later he was gliding his way into the endzone. It was his shortest TD run of the night, as his two other touchdowns were electrifying long runs. The next touchdown came on a scramble. He dropped back, read the defense, then saw a lane. It was effortless looking as he weaved through defenders, he was only slightly touched once as he pulled away from any Buffalo who tried to tackle him. It's easy to see why OU values his ability as an offensive playmaker.     Pratt is a high motor linebacker and also made plays on the offense. Was rarely brought down by first contact, including a rambling powerful TD run where he spun by a couple defenders, high kneed through another and finally spun by a last defender to score. On defense he was part of a swarming Savage defense that was not easy to run on. He has a good mix of hard hat playing style and athleticism.     A rising junior, Smith flashed the big play potential in the first quarter by scoring McAlester's first touchdown. He caught a pass in the flat, powered through a tackle attempt and was off to the races for a long score. It was an impressive display of YAC ability. He had a few more catches, another that showed his ability to have some wiggle on a short catch. While also planting his foot and getting up field. Then another where he high pointed a tough catch over the middle. Smith was a bright spot of the Buffaloes in a tough game.     It was a quieter night for Pouncil, but the next level potential is clearly there. He's a good athlete, with a frame that should fill out well at the next level. One of his few grabs of the night showed off great hand eye coordination when he reached back to pluck a pass that was thrown behind him. Also showed some motor on defense when he raced after a runner and jumped on a fumble. As a dual sport athlete, he's only starting to scratch the surface of his potential.     A tall rangy cornerback, Flagg went step for step to shutdown a couple McAlester deep ball attempts. While another time he flew up to stop a short catch with a good tackle to force a punt. Also has some playmaking potential on the offensive end. Broken Bow appears to have an embarrassment of riches at the skill positions.     Durant's future is on the baseball diamond. However he's a big play, contested catch winner for the Buffalos. Had a very impressive chunk gain on a toe tapper on the sideline in the first half. Then helped McAlester get down the field on a second half drive. He drew a PI in the end zone, then shortly after made a tough grab on a slant for a score. Durant is proof of the deep talent the Buffalos have in their receiver core.     Fluid athlete, who look the part of a big time playmaker when grabbing passes and scooting up field. Has a good mix of speed, along with a little power to shake off tacklers. Or at the very least fall forward for positive yards. Expect a big junior year for this big time athlete from southeastern Oklahoma.     You have to love a safety who isn't afraid to come up and get physical. Skelton was flying around all over the field, wrapping up ball careers. The best example of this was when he read, then stonewalled a jet sweep with a perfect form tackle.     A fire hydrant in the defensive line for the Savages. Made his mark by staying low, getting off blocks and recording multiple sacks and a tough TFL. There's a lot of talent all over the field for Broken Bow, but the dirty work of Sossamon and others is a key to letting the whole team shine.
