Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Redzone Scout
A rising junior, Smith flashed the big play potential in the first quarter by scoring McAlester’s first touchdown. He caught a pass in the flat, powered through a tackle attempt and was off to the races for a long score. It was an impressive display of YAC ability. He had a few more catches, another that showed his ability to have some wiggle on a short catch. While also planting his foot and getting up field. Then another where he high pointed a tough catch over the middle. Smith was a bright spot of the Buffaloes in a tough game.

is an athlete I have had the opportunity to evaluate both through one of my Friday Film Reviews and in person at a Prep Redzone football camp. Smith has put in plenty of work this summer, spending time on the camp circuit competing and continuing to develop his game. Smith moves well at wide receiver and shows the ability to make plays in open space. He has reliable hands, good hand-eye coordination, and the ability to stretch the field vertically as a deep threat. He does a nice job getting in and out of his routes and understands passing concepts, allowing him to create separation and find open space for his quarterback. Having seen Smith compete in person, I like the overall athleticism and skill set he brings to the position. His combination of route running, hands, and ability to make plays down the field should make him a valuable asset for the Buffaloes’ passing game this season.

has the chance to be one of the top two-way players in Class 5A this season. He has had a monster offseason and we’ve had the chance to watch him in person a couple of times and each time, he is one of the best players on the field. With his size, playmaking ability and overall versatility, he reminds us of a former Jeff Craig-coached player in Brayson Carter at Blanchard. Smith might be a little bigger but he brings that same juice to the game. Where he’s going to help his team win, no matter where he lines up on the field. Look for Smith to be an impact player for the Buffs on both sides of the ball.

and he’s hungry for more after a breakout sophomore season. Last fall, Smith led the Buffaloes with 29 catches for a little over 600 yards and eight touchdowns. His yard and touchdown numbers were both almost good enough to be double what the second leading receiver had. Simply put, Smith was dominant during the 2024 season so it’s easy to see why he’d be excited to get back on the field. With another year under his belt, Smith could end up being one of the better wide receivers in Class 5A. But more eyes will certainly be on him in 2025.
