7A Region 8 Preview: Swing Games Set the Stage

Buford is the main contender to take this region home in 2026, but Collins Hill, Mill Creek, an experienced Central Gwinnett squad, a resurgent Discovery program, and the newcomer, Seckinger, will try to shape up 7A region 8 with some swing games down the stretch.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">2025 Standings</h2>   Buford 15-0 (6-0)   Mill Creek 7-4 (5-1)   Collins Hill 6-5 (4-2)   Dacula 5-6 (3-3)   Central Gwinnett 4-5 (2-4)   Discovery 0-9 (0-6)   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Key Returners</h2>   Buford    There is talent across the board on this Buford team, obviously, but [player_tooltip player_id='1584417' first='Noah' last='Nixon'] is perhaps an unsung hero on this squad, even with a commitment to Pitt. He is a true interior OL projection He is a true mauler with the ability to snap the ball at center. He is quick off the line and has quick, powerful punches, which he uses to control the point. He isn't someone who necessarily blows you away athletically, but he is functional for the position and works hard to stay engaged with defenders. Nixon is a high-floor, steady player.     Nuckles returns to the Buford defense after an active and highly productive junior campaign in 2025. He has a nose for the football, which flashes on both sides of the LOS. He does a good job of putting himself in a good position to play the ball, which he pairs with plenty of juice on a frame suitable to play corner at the highest level of football. He is a true tone setter on the back end for Buford.    Central Gwinnett    Peal is the top returning playmaker for Central Gwinnett and is one of the better RBs in Gwinnett County. Peal is a speedy, versatile back who is a true playmaker in space, both as a receiver and when he can leak out to find room to run. He has true home run speed, evidenced by GPS readings over 23 MPH. He is a big play threat from any spot on the field, and I predict he has an even more productive season as a senior this fall.     Fox, committed to Cincy, is coming off a breakout campaign for Central Gwinnett that helped set the stage of his recruitment. He is a long, cut, athletic player who is best coming downhill to impact the game as a tackler and a run defender. He aggressively drives on the ball, which he pairs with the violence and pop in his pads to set the tone and get ball carriers to the turf. He is an energetic, chaos-generating player who can swing the momentum of games by himself.    Collins Hill    Tuff has been a slower, but steady rise onto the recruiting scene, and he finally saw that rise give way to FBS recruiting attention this offseason. He has emerged as a reliable, productive target for Collins Hill, and there's a chance his senior year is the most productive year of them all. He is a smaller receiver who plays bigger, impressing with his body control and hands outside of his frame. You know exactly what you are getting in Tuff, and that's a good thing in this case.     Ever since seeing him work on the 7v7 scene, I have always been a big fan of Hunt, and consider him one of the more underrated players out of this region. He backs up what I've seen in person on tape. He is a stout, explosive, broad-shouldered prospect with a downhill play style, both when attacking the ball in coverage and closing space as a tackler. He has some pop in his pads and drops his pad level to deliver blows in the midsection of ball carriers. At his size and with his playstyle, I think he's a candidate to play nickel at the college level.    Dacula    [player_tooltip player_id='1589358' first='Kobi' last='Brown'] is a member of my 2027 leap list, and here is what I had to say on him when he got that feature:   "Brown returns as Dacula's leading returning rusher, and is set to play an even bigger role as a junior. Brown is a scat back who has played both ways and on special teams in his HS career. He has truly impressive burst, wasting no time dancing and instead putting his feet in the dirt and quickly getting vertical. He runs hard, so while he is certainly more of a finessee option, he gets the most out of each rep and is no easy task to catch and bring down."     With his size and production from a year ago, Fye is quietly a fun player to watch and someone worthy of some attention. He is a driver off the line and quickly eats up space, allowing him to get behind safeties and impact the game as a deep threat. He is a raw athlete who can stumble on occasion, but he tracks the ball well and has good enough hands to make grabs in uncomfortable spots. If he continues to produce, someone should take a chance on Fye.    Discovery    Wilson is the driver offensively for Discovery and quietly one of the top playmakers in this region. He is a shorter, stout player with a low center of gravity, playing like a bowling ball. He is light on his feet and has the twitch to nickel and dime his way around traffic. He keeps his pads low and is forward-leaning, allowing him to fall forward after contact and pack quite a punch for his size.     Williams is a productive, traitsy player for Discovery and is worthy of a mention on the defensive side of the ball. Williams comes in around 6'0 160 with functional athleticism. He is a soft-footed athlete who skates around the field and changes direction well. He impacts each level of the field and has a certain calmness on tape that leads me to believe he is a reliable, heady player. Williams has the activity to always be around the ball, both in coverage and as a tackler.    Mill Creek    Backus is a productive returner in the second level for Mill Creek who consistently makes plays behind the line of scrimmage. He is a reliable player wbo compensates for being undersized by being aggressive as a tackler, pursuer, and as a fitter. He doubles as a baseball athlete, and I believe he would be a great addition for small schools looking for someone who competes. Still, he is sounding D1 alarms, so those small schools would need to keep their fingers crossed.     The combination of Wendt and Backus in the second level is quietly one of the best duos and centers of a defense in the state. Similar to Backus, Wendt is a high-floor, sure player who plays hard and flashes good instincts. He does that with clear FBS traits as an LB, and I believe he is one of the more well-rounded prospects at the position in the state. Georgia State agrees, evidenced by his commitment to the Panthers.    Seckinger    Moore has emerged as a popular small school target this spring, evidenced by an offer to Reinhardt just a few weeks ago. Moore is a trusted corner out on an island, consistently trusted in man coverage with a lot of space. He has soft feet and mirrors impressively. He is patient in coverage and is always around the ball, twisting and turning over both shoulders and playing the ball at a high level.     Minton is an all-region performer who is also generating some small-school recruiting attention. He is an explosive player hovering around 6'1 240 who will likely project as a DE. He has a quick first step, allowing him to shoot gaps and easily penetrate into the backfield. He will play bigger as a senior. so he will offer even more pop at the point of attack.    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">X Factors</h2>   Buford    Hunter is set to step in and take over QB duties for Buford this fall. He is a compact, strong player, now hovering above 200 pounds. He is a true dual threat who uses his speed to escape and get out on the run as a passer, but is totally capable of generating explosives with his legs as a runner. He has a quick, smooth release and plays with impressive finesse as a passer. Hunter is a well known name at this stage, but many will get their first introduction to his game this fall.    Central Gwinnett    Mills is an athletic, versatile player coming off a productive fall and has several offers under his belt. He is a long, physical corner who isn't afraid to get physical at critical points of the route, using his hands to manipulate receivers. He is a willing player as a tackler, exploding downhill and hitting with intent. I love his tape at corner, but it's his ability to impact the game at each level from that position that makes him an X factor.    Collins Hill    Cross, a recent Troy commitment, has improved each year and has a good chance to save his best for last as a senior. He is a raw, but athletic player who is still taking shape and growing into himself. He has always been a blend of raw talent, flashing impressive playmaking skills as a runner and a live, whippy release to spin the ball around the yard. He is a big play threat in every situation, putting him in a good place as a developmental QB as more nuance and technique develop.    Dacula    Ortiz is an all-region performer and the anchor up front for Dacula. Ortiz is a shorter, true mauler style blocker who is an obvious long-term projection on the IOL at his 6'2 290 frame. He is a broad player who is hard to run through with manipulative hand strength. He is a better athlete than you'd think, proving he can efficiently pull and climb to the second level.    Discovery    Liddell is an eye-catcher from a traits perspective and has emerged as the premier prospect on this squad. He is a massive player at 6'5 235, and uses his length to create extension, play big, and set the edge. He is a functional athlete who showcases the ability to bend and turn speed to power, an element of his game that should only improve with more time and development as an athlete. Liddell is easy to dream on, and I am sure a D1 program would be happy to take a flyer and bet on his upside.    Mill Creek    Ragone is in line to be the guy at QB this fall for Mill Creek and is a true candidate to rise out of this region. Ragone is a big body at 6'3 200 with plenty of horsepower. Everyone who has seen him throw in person has rave reviews of his arm strength and talent. He has a long, but whippy and quick release, and generates easy buzz to all parts of the field. Ragone is being a little overlooked at least nationally in this QB class, but he should be one of the biggest risers in the state at the QB position over the next few years.    Seckinger    Sims, committed to Dartmouth, broke onto the scene last fall and is the true definition of an X factor with his combination of traits and playmaking skills at a premier position. He is a long, skinny, true speed rusher off the edge who is quick into the backfield and an efficient pursuer. He plays hard, which will benefit him as his weight catches up with the rest of his traits. Sims has a lot of developmental upside to bank on, which sets the intrigue here.    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Region Risers</h2>    Williams has developed into a pretty well-known name on the recruiting trail already, and he is set to take a leap forward production-wise. He plays on both sides of the ball and could play at both spots with ease. As a receiver, he is a snappy playmaker who is a problem with the ball in space, changing direction, and squeezing the most out of each rep. He plays with refreshing urgency on both sides of the ball, which is what ties his game together.     Wyatt had a flashy fall for Buford last year, which has bled into an offseason where he generated consistent P4 attention. Wyatt is a physical player packed into his frame and built beyond his years. He is up to 6'2 215 with impressive pop and physicality against contact. I love his pursuit to the ball, patiently clicking downhill and mirroring the ball carrier before he drives downhill. Remember the name, because he will be a fun one to follow the next few years.     Davis is one of the hottest 2029 prospects on the recruiting trail in GA and is an obvious candidate to develop into a blue-chipper. Davis is a long, explosive player with a physical, downhill brand of football. He has some serious pop in his pads, a really impressive feature for someone his age. He closes space in a hurry and consistently proves capable of separating the ball from the ball carrier. Davis is an exciting player who could be a game breaker. I love the body type on this kid. He is a long, lean player with a lot of room to fill out and get bigger. He runs with a physical edge and is a chore to bring down. His long strides help him to lift off once he finds space to operate, and as he grows into those strides, he should be able to find another gear. A lot of developmental upside here."    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Contenders</h2>   Buford   Buford is a pencil in as the favorite to win this region, especially coming off an undefeated state championship campaign a year ago. There are key losses across the board here, including at QB. Their top 2 leading rushers and top 2 leading receivers are also headed to graduation. Defensively, Joshua Echols and [player_tooltip player_id='942230' first='Silas' last='Nuckles'] return as top performers to help steady the ship, along with other rising seniors who have waited their turn and are already firmly on the FBS radar.   Buford reloads every year, so even with critical losses, they will be backed by a physical run game and one of the most talented defenses in the country. You can pencil them in as a strong candidate to repeat in 2026.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Darkhorse</h2>   Collins Hill   Collins Hill made some splashes last year, and are on good footing to improve their 6-win total from a year ago. They will have to find a way to replace Deuce Geralds and Katrell Webb, both elite prospects in their own right, but also two players who helped make up one of the most prolific pass rushes in the country. Thankfully, talent at critical spots is back. [player_tooltip player_id='354909' first='Makyree' last='Cross'] returns at QB, as do their top 2 rushers from a year ago. 4 of their 5 leading receivers return from last year, including [player_tooltip player_id='508131' first='Jamel' last='Tuff'].   Defense is where the biggest makeover will happen. Young talent returns on the backend, but Collins Hill will have to replace a truly absurd amount of pass rush from a year ago, which is where the story could be told in 2026.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Rest</h2>   Mill Creek   Mill Creek was the runner-up in this region a year ago, and they should be another playoff contender in 2026. A large amount of senior production exits on the offensive side of the ball, but Anderson Ragone steps in at QB and could generate some excitement if playmakers step up around him. Defensively is where Mill Creek will set the tone. [player_tooltip player_id='2177104' first='Brady' last='Wendt'] and Wyatt Backus make up a strong second level, while Bryson Green returns after a prolific sophomore season against the ball.   There's a lot to replace here, but Mill Creek should be physical and gritty enough to replicate similar success in 2026.   Central Gwinnett   Central Gwinnett returns perhaps the most underrated blend of talent in this region. Leading returners are back at QB and receiver, but [player_tooltip player_id='1717544' first='Christian' last='Peal'] and the run game set the tone offensively. Peal has truly elite, lift-off speed. He is a big play threat from any spot on the field, and a candidate to double his production as a senior if he can take a positive step forward.   I am a really big fan of [player_tooltip player_id='1258729' first='Corneil' last='Mills'] on defense. He is physical as a corner, attacks the ball, and is extremely active as a tackler and pursuer from that position. [player_tooltip player_id='2143651' first='Ryinn' last='Fox'] is a true FBS prospect on that side of the ball, and there is more production sprinkled in from 2027's and 2028's.   Central Gwinnett was a junior-led team in a lot of ways last year, so this is an experienced team that could rattle off a few wins in swing games to get back to the playoffs.   Dacula   Dacula is looking to get back to the playoffs, and they will have to do so behind the running game. Their top 2 leading rushers exit, but the workload was spread out, and I believe [player_tooltip player_id='1589358' first='Kobi' last='Brown'] and Marck Horace make up one of the more underrated, overlooked RB duos in the state, and I expect both to improve on their production from a year ago.   Dacula looks the part of a physical team that can run the ball, which raises their floor if they are able to do that efficiently.   Discovery   Discovery was winless a year ago, but the slate isn't completely barren like other winless programs in the state. Chase Wilson is a legitimate talent at RB who is capable of carving out plays in this region. [player_tooltip player_id='1840037' first='Will' last='Liddell'] is a bonafide D1 prospect who is only getting better, and there are good athletes sprinkled around the yard around those guys, especially on defense.   The path to wins can get treacherous in this region, but there is some meat on the bone here for Discovery, and there is room for a decent start in 2026, which they could carry to a much-improved season in 2026.   Seckinger   Seckinger is the newcomer in this region after quietly winning 6 games a year ago. It has been fun to watch Seckinger improve during the youthful years of their football program, and you are starting to see the talent, weight room, and the experience factor in as they try to develop into a regular on the HSFB scene. KJ Sims is the big-time recruit on this team, committed to Dartmouth. Similar to Discovery, the team itself just looks solid and better than they get credit for.   We will learn a lot about the Seckinger program and what their current team is made of this fall.
