I've really enjoyed doing this type of conference preview this season. We've already looked at some other conferences in higher classifications (Central Piedmont 7A/8A, Greater Neuse River 7A, and CAP 8A) and I looked at some intriguing conferences on the eastern part of the state (Eastern Sandhills 5A/6A, Eastern Plains 2A/3A and Coastal 5A/6A). Matt Morrow has previewed the Meck Power 6 Conference

We haven't looked at any of the Charter school conferences. I have a strong affinity for charters, dating back to my three years teaching at charters in Tennessee, and I love the decision to put a lot of them in the same conferences. Here, I'm previewing an intriguing Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A Conference.

Potential Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A MVPs

This is a wildly entertaining combined conference, with a couple of charter powerhouses joining together with some newer charter schools in the Greater Charlotte area, including two playing in their first year of varsity football. It's made up of five 2A schools, Pine Lake Prep (3A), and two 4A schools. While these teams will compete in the playoffs against the traditional public schools, the vast majority of their regular season schedules will be against each other. Bradford Prep will join the varsity ranks next season, leaving this bigger conference with just seven teams this fall.

Christ the King Crusaders (2A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1716164' first='Jamison' last='Ehret'], QB

While the defense loses a few key contributors, the roster and last year's results suggest a bounce back year for the Crusaders, who had five of their seven losses come by 10 points or less. More often than not, the offense struggled to find consistency, but that unit looks stronger this season. It'll all depend on the development of quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1716164' first='Jamison' last='Ehret']. If he can be just a bit sharper this season, the Crusaders should be much better.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='1608324' first='Troy' last='Alderfer'] (TE), [player_tooltip player_id='1678636' first='Caden' last='Fritz'] (LB)

Community School of Davidson Spartans (2A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1041542' first='Ty' last='Sigler'], QB; [player_tooltip player_id='1467712' first='Tyler' last='Johnson'], QB

I hesitate to say it's a rebuilding year for the Spartans, but if they're going to repeat last year's success, they'll need to get some standout performances from new players, as they lose a ton to graduation. CSD brought in not one, but two potential quarterback starters, so I'm extremely interested to see which guy wins the job. Sigler is more of a pocket passer, while Johnson has dual-threat capabilities. Both the defense and skill positions lose a lot, so there's pressure on the quarterback to elevate the team.

Others Considered: Zack Albert (Ath.), [player_tooltip player_id='1160950' first='Jaxon' last='Robeson'] (Ath.)

Corvian Community Cardinals (2A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1716197' first='Jayden' last='Summers'] (LB)

Corvian loses a ton on offense (and defense) from last year's state runners-up squad, and to be honest, I'm not quite sure how the Cardinals can truly replace all of the production. They've got some talented players that will need to step up, like two-way WR/FS Reginald Grier. But, it all comes down to how well a key group of defenders plays in 2025. Summers was elite last year, with five forced fumbles and 21 tackles for loss. He'll need to do something similar this year to help put the Cardinals back in contention.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='1607751' first='Nathanael' last='Kamba'] (DL), [player_tooltip player_id='1353067' first='Jesiah' last='Fields'] (DL)

Langtree Charter Lions (2A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1716097' first='Will' last='Hay'], RB/LB

Langtree enters its first year of varsity football after a fun junior varsity season that included four one-score games. They're a bit undersized, but have some proven talent and more continuity than any team in the state, given that they didn't lose any seniors. Leading rusher and tackler [player_tooltip player_id='1716097' first='Will' last='Hay'] is the key guy on both sides of the ball, as he's shifty and loves to hit. Expect him to be in on a lot of plays on both sides of the ball.

Others Considered: Garrett Barbee (RB/WR), Aubrey Doyle (DL)

Pine Lake Prep Pride (3A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1398025' first='Thomas' last='Kieffer'], LB

Kieffer was a monster on defense last season, nearly doubling up the next leading tackler. Despite a disappointing 2-8 season, the Pride weren't far off last season and a few more bounces their way could have led to a much better year. Kieffer is the heart and soul of a team that needs to replace a lot, both due to graduation and transfers. Reid Tammaro will be important on both sides of the ball as he's the second-leading tackler to return and is the leading returning receiver.

Others Considered: Reid Tammaro

Lake Norman Charter Knights (4A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1716155' first='Drew' last='Johnson'], Ath.

The Knights lose their best player and do-it-all receiver from last season, but that only means that Johnson can be the guy this year. He scored four touchdowns last season: one on a catch, one on a punt return, one via fumble, and one via interception. This year, his overall volume at receiver should be way up as he becomes the No. 1 target in a pass-heavy offense.

Others Considered: Liam McDonald (LB), Henry Casey (IDL)

Lincoln Charter Eagles (4A)

[player_tooltip player_id='1687747' first='Braydon' last='Walden'], QB

The Eagles enter their first varsity season as a team that doesn't physically look like they'll have initial difficulties. This isn't a team of undersized players, with several starters with well above average size and speed. It all runs through 2028 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1687747' first='Braydon' last='Walden'], a guy with a great frame and big arm. He's already a scouting favorite of ours, so much so that we ranked him before he's ever taken a varsity snap. The Eagles also have some quality receiving targets in [player_tooltip player_id='1716124' first='Alex' last='Beasley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1853188' first='Isaac' last='Wilson'].

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='1716124' first='Alex' last='Beasley'] (WR/LB), [player_tooltip player_id='1853188' first='Isaac' last='Wilson'] (WR)
