Minnesota Week 2: Recap, Top Performers, Friday Night Preview

Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, prep football games across the Land of 10,000 Lakes kicked off in Week 2 action, and it was another exciting week of competition. The most important scores, the top individual performances and performers, and some of the biggest games of Week 3, which kicks off tonight. Dig in.   --   Noteworthy Results & Scores   Top Team Performances/Results of Week 2   Edina 35, Eden Prairie 14   In my opinion, this was the biggest game of Week 2, and I was lucky enough to have attended the contest on Friday night in Edina. The full game recap is on the site, so I'll keep it shorter here, but this was a showdown between two legit Top 5 6A contenders and had big implications in the Big School state title race. To sum it up, this is the best I've seen Edina look in a decade, with depth, size, and superstars on both sides of the ball. 2026 DT [player_tooltip player_id='924336' first='Sawyer' last='Jezierski'] is a 6'4, 260 lb. madman in the middle of their defense, with physicality and experience behind him, and some legit talent in the backend. Offensively, the Hornets are stacked. Big, physical OL, budding superstar [player_tooltip player_id='592125' first='Mason' last='West'] at QB, and one of the longest, most athletic WR groups I've seen in a while, led by certified P4 talent [player_tooltip player_id='234833' first='Meyer' last='Swinney']. Eden Prairie is no slouch and will have a good year, but Edina is chasing hardware in 2024. Can't wait to see this 6A race continue to develop.   Dassel-Cokato 34, Annandale 33   Year after year, Dassel-Cokato continues to impress, and it doesn't seem like there has been much of a drop off since their state title in 2021. The Chargers took down a talented Annandale squad in a thrilling 34-33 contest with major 3A implications on the line. [player_tooltip player_id='1248642' first='Kobee' last='Thielen'] is one of the more underrated athletes in the state, and he opened the game with 2 TDs, and was helped by senior [player_tooltip player_id='234886' first='Caleb' last='Smock'] scoring two more, along with fullback Octavius Winston Jr. Team effort by Annandale as well, with [player_tooltip player_id='1257442' first='Isaiah' last='Turner'], Cam Ergen, and Nick Olson finding paydirt on the ground and [player_tooltip player_id='1362932' first='Gabe' last='Westman'] catching a TD pass through the air. Sounds like an electric, tough, and physical game for both squads. I wish I could have been there. Won't be the last time we hear about both these squads this fall.   Fergus Falls 27, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 23   Another major AAA matchup went down last Friday, with Fergus Falls narrowly toppling DGF at home 27-23. No box score available, but both teams were talented and experienced coming into the season and earned notable recognition on the 2024 Preseason All-State teams. With Stewartville looming large in the AAA race at the top end, I'm very curious as to how the rest of the AAA contenders will sort themselves out going into sections. This was a big test for both Fergus Falls and DGF early into the season.   Becker 13, Providence Academy 9   Talking about Becker for the second week in a row, but the Bulldogs once again caught my eye in a tight finish with Providence Academy. I think this says a lot about both teams. Providence Academy is overlooked in the 4A race, with a Gopher commit ready to tear up his senior season, an experienced and collected QB, and size and experience littered around the roster. However, Becker always fights, scraps, and claws, and can get it done in tight games year after year. Cody Klatt and Owen Angell scored rushing TDs for Becker, and a FG by the Lions, as well as a passing touchdown from QB Magnus Hansen to WR Matthew Hunter, kept Providence Academy in it, but the big game experience on Becker's side was too much to overcome. Lot of season left for both sides.   Minnetonka 28, Wayzata 14   Another 6A showdown, Wayzata was streaking and riding high off a Week 1 upset win over Lakeville South and looked to continue the momentum into Week 2 against an old Classic Lake Conference rival in Minnetonka. I can't lie, I thought Wayzata could have gotten it done, but the Skippers, who have a ton of talent on the defensive side of the ball, smothered any chance of a potential back-to-back upset. We have a detailed recap on the site ready for your viewership, but I'm excited about Minnetonka's potential, especially with former Maple Grove HC Matt Lombardi leading the defense. As those kids get more and more comfortable in the new system, they're only going to get better, and if the Skippers are playing their best football at the end of the season they are going to be a darkhorse contender in the 6A race. Prior Lake @ Eden Prairie   Edina @ Minnetonka   Shakopee @ Wayzata   Friday Night   Littlefork-Big Falls @ Cook County   Two strong 9man squads with solid rosters and experience get after it!   Robbinsdale Armstrong @ Robbinsdale Cooper   I love rivalry games, and this is one of the best in the state in terms of competition level and geographic proximity. These kids are very familiar with each other by the time they are upperclassmen in high school, and with the resurgence of Armstrong's program in the last few years, both of these teams have been coming into the game with packed rosters. This year is no exception. Expect this one to be physical!   Becker @ Holy Angels   Yet another big game for Becker, who travel up to the Metro for a big matchup with Holy Angels. The Stars have some serious size, as well as top-end talent, so I'm interested to see how Becker matches up with Holy Angels. Good 4A showdown here.   Rocori @ Benilde-St. Margaret's   Another outstate/Metro 4A matchup, Rocori is without stud LT [player_tooltip player_id='591732' first='Andrew' last='Trout'] but have plenty of talent in their skill positions, as well as D1 talent, which should match up well with BSM's loaded roster. However, the Red Knights are fresh off a beatdown by Byron, so I'm curious how BSM will respond. I'll be eager to get this score in on Friday night.   Caledonia @ Chatfield   Another rivalry matchup, this one comes out of Southeast Minnesota and the AA ranks. This has been one of the toughest and most competitive small school rivalry games in the state the past few seasons, and both teams have strong rosters with a top-end superstar in 2024, with Caledonia QB [player_tooltip player_id='1202012' first='Ethan' last='Stendel'] heading to Minnesota to play LB and Chatfield's [player_tooltip player_id='362314' first='Ethan' last='Cole'] heading to North Dakota to battle in the trenches.   Lakeville North @ Lakeville South   This one needs no introduction. 6A powerhouses, one of the most talented areas in the state, and two legit Top 10, maybe Top 5, 6A contenders. Should be a battle off I35W.   BOLD @ Minneota   Class A showdown in Southwest Minnesota on Friday night. Both teams have explosive offensive weapons ([player_tooltip player_id='234931' first='Jack' last='Gross'] for BOLD and [player_tooltip player_id='1145278' first='Ryan' last='Meagher'] for Minneota), and good rosters behind them. Both teams are 2-0 as well.   Albany @ Sauk Centre   Class AAA matchup here between two tough squads with good rosters in 2024. Albany's been putting out some high-quality athletes as of late, and I'm a huge fan of DE [player_tooltip player_id='1202006' first='Troy' last='Hansen'] and WR [player_tooltip player_id='1213801' first='Jeric' last='Schloegl'] for Sauk Centre.
