THURSDAY'S GAMES

Elgin 28, Lawton MacArthur 7

On Thursday, we headed to southern Oklahoma for a showdown between 5A and 4A programs that have state title aspirations. 5A's #2 Lawton MacArthur hosted 4A's #1 Elgin and the visiting Owls made quite the statement on Thursday night. Elgin won 28-7 behind a dominant performance from both sides of the line of scrimmage and a relentless rushing attack. CLICK HERE for a look at the players from both teams that stood out to us on Thursday night.

Nathan Hale 33, Webster 20

Thursday was a memorable night for Nathan Hale as they would beat Tulsa Public Schools foe Webster 33-20. The win would snap a 44-game losing streak and now the Rangers shift their focus to the rest of the 2024 season now that they have a win under their belt. We mentioned this summer how the Rangers are definitely not lacking some talent that's good enough to win in 2024. And we also talked about how their first win could come as early as the season opener. The Rangers now turn their attention to another TPS opponent in week one as they'll square off with East Central on Friday night.

Newcastle 49, Bartlesville 24

We covered Newcastle earlier in the week for our weekly practice report and we thought that the Racers were ready to open the season with a statement win over a 6A-2 squad in Bartlesville. It turned out to be a slow start for Newcastle but they absolutely turned it on in the second half. The Racers would trail Bartlesville 16-14 at halftime and would outscore the Bruins 35-8 in the second half to run away with the convincing victory. [player_tooltip player_id='482118' first='Kaden' last='Longman'] stood out for Newcastle as he would produce in a major way to help the Racers get off to a fast start. They'll need that as they face a brutal non-district slate.

Tuttle 31, Guthrie 24

Tuttle went on the road and stunned Guthrie in the final minute with a 31-24 victory. Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='473754' first='Cruz' last='Campbell'] found senior [player_tooltip player_id='215570' first='Brady' last='Mcadoo'] in the back of the end zone and Mcadoo made a spectacular catch, held on through contact and scored to give the Tigers a big win to open up their 2024 campaign. We've mentioned a few times over the last couple months that Tuttle and specifically their offense is going to be a problem. Campbell is a quarterback that is getting better and better every time he goes out there and he has two legitimate weapons at wide receiver.

FRIDAY'S GAMES

Cascia Hall 29, Holland Hall 28

The annual "Hall Brawl" definitely lived up to the hype as Cascia Hall would survive an upset scare from Holland Hall. The Commandos used their high-powered passing attack to beat the Dutch 29-28. They trailed 28-16 going into the fourth quarter and would have to rally to win. This is the second straight season where Cascia Hall would stun their rival in the final quarter. The Commandos would score on an [player_tooltip player_id='916762' first='Owen' last='Darby'] touchdown run with a little over three minutes to play but the defense would need to get a stop to secure the win. Holland Hall had a chance to win the game but their field goal was wide left.

Cushing 18, Berryhill 7

Cushing got a huge win to kick off their 2024 campaign with an 18-7 victory over Berryhill. This is a Berryhill team that came into this season as a top five team in our Class 3A preseason rankings. Cushing is definitely a team that belongs in the 4A top ten after knocking off the Chiefs at home. The Tigers would win the low-scoring affair and maybe we shouldn't be surprised. Cushing has now won five straight in the series with Berryhill. This was a strong head to head clash to open the year and we think that both teams will go on to make plenty of noise in their respective classes.

Deer Creek 53, Bishop McGuinness 17

Deer Creek made the short trip to Bishop McGuinness and left no doubt, running away with a 53-17 win over the Irish. The Antlers were led by their offense that put up 50+ points and made it look easy. That easy play starts with senior quarterback and Georgia Tech commit [player_tooltip player_id='242231' first='Grady' last='Adamson'] as he sliced up the McGuinness defense and spread the ball around to multiple playmakers at the wide receiver position. And you have to also tip your cap to a Deer Creek defense that bent but never broke and limited what the Irish were able to do on the offensive side of the ball. The Antlers now have a big showdown with Edmond Memorial.

Edmond Memorial 35, Del City 0

It was a complete performance for Edmond Memorial as they went on the road and shut out Del City 35-0. The Bulldogs were led by an efficient offense with senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='209872' first='David' last='McComb'] leading the way. But they also got production from their defense in addition to the Bulldogs keeping Del City off the scoreboard. The Bulldogs had a pick six and also held a Del City squad that played in the 5A title game a year ago scoreless on Friday night. We thought coming into this season that the Bulldogs were primed for a bounce back season in 2024 and they've certainly gotten off to a fast start.

Jenks 48, Edmond Santa Fe 3

At this time a year ago, we were talking about Edmond Santa Fe coming to Jenks and stunning the Trojans. Fast forward to 2024 and the Trojans left no doubt. Star junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='402378' first='KD' last='Jones'] dominated from the start, running for nearly 200 yards in the season opener and leading the Trojans to a 48-3 win over the Wolves. While Jones did his thing, the offense was incredibly balanced and they had plenty of standouts on that side of the ball. And then the defense was simply dominant, holding Santa Fe to just a field goal and limiting their star running back. Now they get ready to host a red-hot Owasso team.

Lincoln Christian 56, Victory Christian 0

3A's top-ranked Lincoln Christian already looks in championship form and it's just week zero. The defending 3A champs went across town and shut out Victory Christian 56-0. Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1101281' first='Carter' last='Ricke'] had a solid debut as QB1 of the Bulldogs with an efficient outing but the defense got our attention with their shutout of a Victory Christian offense that has weapons that can beat you. We knew coming into this season that the Bulldog defense would be solid, specifically in the front seven and they lived up to the hype. Now, they shift focus to the state championship rematch in OKC against Heritage Hall.

Muskogee 56, Booker T Washington 21

Reigning 6A-2 state champion Muskogee had to knock the rust off before they ran away from Booker T Washington with a 56-21 win. The Roughers would shake off a slow start and scored 28 unanswered points to leave no doubt that they were starting off the year with a 1-0 record. Senior quarterback and Texas State commit [player_tooltip player_id='211556' first='Jamarian' last='Ficklin'] had another solid outing and the 1-2 punch of [player_tooltip player_id='515901' first='PJ' last='Wallace'] and [player_tooltip player_id='479391' first='Latavion' last='Johnson'] at running back had a very nice debut on Friday night. On the other side, Booker T Washington kicked off the Dan Bitson era with a loss but there were plenty of positives as well.

North Rock Creek 17, Marlow 7

North Rock Creek opened up their 2024 season at home with a big win over Marlow. They beat the visiting Outlaws 17-7 and now they take a week off before continuing the rest of their non-district schedule. The Cougars will look to use Friday night's win as momentum to carry them into a very competitive district in Class 3A. Marlow was a 3A semifinal team a year ago and in the North Rock Creek preview this summer, we mentioned this game being a perfect "measuring stick" game for the Cougars. And they passed the test with flying colors as they look to make another run to the 3A playoffs.

Owasso 40, Bixby 21

The 2024 season kicked off with a bang in Owasso on Friday night as the #4 Rams would knock off top-ranked Bixby 40-21. Owasso made quite the statement in their season opener, beating a Bixby team that was 74-1 in their last 75 games. This game got off to a fast start with both teams striking with big plays. However the majority of the first half was a defensive battle after both teams settled in. The Rams would pull away in the second half and they won this game with dominant play along the line of scrimmage and a breakout performance from a junior wide receiver. You can check out our complete recap RIGHT HERE.

Piedmont 13, Midwest City 0

Piedmont is looking to be an instant impact team in 2024 as they move up to Class 6A-2 for the first time in program history. And they got off to a great start on Friday night. They went on the road and shut out Midwest City 13-0. Piedmont came into this season with a confidence in their defense, considering all the experience and overall talent that they had returning on that side of the ball. Midwest City has a strong rushing attack and they were able to churn out yards but Piedmont kept them off the scoreboard with an impressive shutout victory. Now they look to build off this win.

Union 42, Bentonville, AR 35 (OT)

While a lot of attention in 6A-1 was on the Owasso win over Bixby, Union went over to northwest Arkansas and beat Bentonville 42-35 in overtime. The Redhawks would score first in the extra period and then the defense came up with a stop to survive and come back to Oklahoma with a 1-0 record. The Redhawks were led by their star quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='188014' first='Shaker' last='Reisig'] and junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='858876' first='Tayveon' last='Parry'] as that duo put up some big numbers in the win. They had to hold off a Bentonville rally in the second half to send the game to overtime. They now go back on the road in week one to face Stillwater.
