2024 WV Team Preview: Spring Valley Timberwolves

The Spring Valley Timberwolves struggled to start the 2023 season losing their first four games albeit against four of the top teams in the state last season but rebounded nicely down the stretch finishing the regular season at 6-4 before bowing out to a good Spring Mills team in the first round of the playoffs. Expectations are high in 2024 with what should be an improved team and recently being moved down to the new Class AAA by the WVSSAC which automatically made them serious contenders in their new classification. The Timberwolves will have talent at every position and return a large chunk of their roster from last season. They'll have one of the top athletes in the state in 2025 WR/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='450994' first='Jalyn' last='Abercrombie'] who can be utilized in a variety of ways, but don't overlook the talent around him that will prevent defenses from keying on him every play. Spring Valley should be a Top 5 team in Class AAA and a contender for the state championship in what should be a fun race to Charleston.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">2024 TEAM SCHEDULE</h2>   8/30 (A) South Point (OH) 9/06 (A) Hurricane 9/14 (H) Jefferson 9/20 (A) Cabell Midland 9/27 (H) George Washington 10/4 (-) Open 10/11 (H) Huntington 10/18 (A) Capital 10/25 (A) Woodrow Wilson 11/1 (H) South Charleston 11/8 (H) St. Albans   2024 Record Prediction: 7-3 2023 Record: 6-5   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">PLAYERS TO KNOW</h2>    Spring Valley returns one of the top athletes in the state in 2025 WR [player_tooltip player_id='450994' first='Jalyn' last='Abercrombie'] who rounds out our Top 5 in the rankings. The 5'10 175 do-it-all athlete for the Timberwolves totaled over 500 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns as a junior who was utilized more as a running back but will most likely be a receiver at the next level where he still caught 20 passes for 350 yards and 4 more scores. Abercrombie is a D1 prospect with offers from Marshall and App State among others and see you why right away with the first clip in his junior highlight tape showing great body control and balance to house a jump ball with yards after the catch.   Expect Abercrombie to put up more receiving numbers in 2024 with the right personnel to get him the ball more through the air.      We're excited to see 2025 Spring Valley quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1171873' first='Liam' last='McGuire'] in a full-time starting role in 2024 with anticipation of a breakout senior season for the Timberwolves. McGuire split time last season with a graduated senior but showed flashes of high potential as a passer. He has a big arm that can stretch the field vertically with the weapons around him to have one of the better passing attacks in Class AAA which Spring Valley isn't typically known for. McGuire has the arm strength to make all of the throws and can put high velocity on his passes.   Look for the Timberwolves to spread the ball around this season through the air and for McGuire to earn more D2 opportunities with a good senior year.      2025 WR [player_tooltip player_id='1126311' first='Cole' last='Ferguson'] will be another weapon in the Spring Valley passing game to utilize and lead the Timberwolves in receiving in 2023. He totaled 475 yards and 4 touchdowns while also being a good returner on kickoffs averaging 27 yards per attempt. The two-sport standout who doubles as a very good baseball player for the Timberwolves will have options for which sport he wants to play in college and may be an even better baseball prospect. On the football field, Ferguson is a quick and speedy receiver who can stretch the field or utilize his short and intermediate route running ability to move the chains.   He'll be a good 1-2 punch with Abercrombie again this season in their passing game who will also give good defensive snaps.      2025 Spring Valley LB [player_tooltip player_id='908994' first='Braeden' last='Booth'] has put on great size over the off-season and is up 20 pounds since his junior year which has raised his potential as a prospect mightily. Size was the biggest trait that he needed to work on to elevate his potential as a college prospect and he's put in the work to get there which is great to see. His play on the field last season warranted some college looks as he led the team in tackles and TFLs. Booth is an aggressive outside linebacker who crashes the edge well and has the quickness off the end to create havoc behind the line of scrimmage. He also has the athleticism to make plays in space and in coverage when needed.   The added size should allow him to have an even better senior season with college offers sure to roll in.      Another weapon at receiver who will be utilized more this season is 2025 WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id='1126339' first='Bryce' last='Fuller']. Touches were limited during his junior season but the offense seems to be trending in a more spread system in 2024 that they had success with in the second half of the season last year. Fuller will benefit from that but will also be a valuable contributor on defense as a DB. His track background gives him a good base to build on as a football prospect and could earn some D2 opportunities this year.   Here's what we said about Fuller earlier this year in our <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2024/04/2025-prospects-new-to-the-top-125/">2025 rankings New Additions article</a>:   "A 2025 Watch List athlete we recently spotlighted who also makes the jump into the rankings is Spring Valley's [player_tooltip player_id='1126339' first='Bryce' last='Fuller']. Fuller had a modest junior season in terms of production but flashed some next-level athleticism with more opportunities sure to come in 2024 for his senior season. He was a two-way player for the Timberwolves in 2023 and may flip to DB in our rankings in the final update after the 2024 season depending on what film he has available. In the reps he saw last season, Fuller made the most of them on both sides of the ball and is also a quality runner on the Spring Valley Track & Field team. They should be able to throw the ball around more next season with classmate QB [player_tooltip player_id='1171873' first='Liam' last='McGuire']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/liam-mcguire-4/"></a> returning as their likely full-time QB1 so more touches for Fuller seem inevitable which could raise his stock a lot and may find himself much higher in the rankings with a breakout senior season."      Fellow 2025 WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id='907612' first='Gabe' last='Dixon'] was in the same boat as Fuller last season who didn't have a ton of opportunities to make plays but should have a bigger role in the offense in 2024. He's another athletic receiver who flashed when he did get the ball last season Dixon is a definite small college prospect who D3 schools should be following closely with D2 potential if he can put some great things on film.   Here's what we recently said about Dixon in our <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2024/07/2025-prospects-new-to-the-top-175-pt-2/">2025 rankings New Additions Article</a>:   "We're expecting a much bigger season for 2025 Spring Valley WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id='907612' first='Gabe' last='Dixon']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/gabe-dixon/"></a> in 2024 for his senior year. You caught glimpses of him last season in a crowded receiver group for the Timberwolves, but Dixon is capable of more as added opportunities should become available this season. Dixon has the athleticism to have a breakout year with a track background to build on heading into an important final year for him. He's had a good start to it with a strong showing in some 7 on 7s as Spring Valley is poised to throw the ball more than usual this season with the pieces to execute a more spread offense."      2025 Spring Valley defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1226813' first='Tristan' last='Watts'] recently made his debut in the rankings as a Top 200 player and has the potential to climb higher with a big senior year. He's another prospect who D3 programs should be targeting with possible D2 potential.   Here's what we recently said about Watts in our <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2024/07/2025-prospects-new-to-the-top-200-pt-3/">2025 rankings New Additions Article</a>:   "Another under-the-radar big man prospect to know heading into the 2024 season is 2025 Spring Valley DL Triston Watts. Watts should have a bigger role for the Timberwolves this season after totaling 24 tackles as a junior in 2023 at defensive tackle. He has quality small college DL size at 6'0 240 with apparent athleticism to play at the next level. Watts' first step can beat guards inside and give him the chance to become a pass-rushing interior DL. He also flashed physicality on film with good hand use at times and pursuit of the ball."      Another small college prospect for Spring Valley that D3 programs need to know is 2025 TE/FB/LB [player_tooltip player_id='1001102' first='Will' last='McClure']. He's an unselfish player who was mostly utilized as a blocking FB/H-Back as a junior but has the athleticism to expand his role more this season and at the next level. Size will be the biggest aspect of his game that can be improved to maximize his potential as a prospect and has the frame to add significant weight in the future.   He'll be a good role player again this season for the Timberwolves and provide depth in the backfield.      2025 Spring Valley DB [player_tooltip player_id='1307482' first='Logan' last='Harris'] will provide another option in the defensive secondary for the Timberwolves and did some good things there as a junior last season. He looks like a future college safety who has potential at free or strong and can play nickel as well. harris totaled 36 tackles and 3 TFLs in 2023 and was a quality player closer to the line of scrimmage. He supports in run defense well and can play in space on the front of the defense.   Harris has the athleticism to be a rangy player and further develop in pass coverage and should get some small college looks this season.      One of the top offensive linemen in the 2026 class in our eyes is Spring Valley's [player_tooltip player_id='1138207' first='Michael' last='Shy'] who shined as a sophomore for the Timberwolves. The 6'2 270 big man was an All-MSAC performer as a sophomore and clearly has a bright future for the position. Shy held down the left tackle spot last season which speaks to how much his coaches trust him as a young lineman with his future likely at guard at his size. He's a people mover and a strong young athlete who could blow defenders off the ball as a sophomore.   Shy has the physicality and mindset to develop into a high-level prospect with the potential to join some of the other 2026 offensive linemen who have received D1 attention.      Another talented 2026 Spring Valley offensive lineman that you need to know this season is [player_tooltip player_id='1138214' first='Braxton' last='Carter']. He's also a good-sized young lineman who can develop into one of the top big men in this class and flashed a lot of potential and upside as a sophomore starter. Carter has a good guard prospect body and fitted in well there at right guard last season. He can make large strides in his game this season to realize that potential even further, but the early signs are there that he'll get there in time.   The Timberwolves have some promising young linemen in their program with Carter being one of the best.      Spring Valley will have options in the backfield again this season with 2026 RB [player_tooltip player_id='1137479' first='Miguel' last='Cain'] being their top pure running back last season as a sophomore. We like his combination of speed and power and is a very strong young athlete. He'll get you tough yards between the tackles but has the speed to break loose and pick up chunk plays at times. Cain is also a talented blocker who can be utilized as a fullback and will stand firm in the pocket to protect his quarterback.   His stats from last season won't wow you but look for Cain to be a significant contributor as a junior in a variety of roles.      Another option in the backfield that will provide great snaps at linebacker is 2026 LB [player_tooltip player_id='894978' first='Camrin' last='Perdue']. Perdue finished second on the team in tackles with 65 and is another very strong athlete in the Spring Valley program. He's another talented baseball prospect who will have post high school options for which sport he wants to play. Perdue may not have prototypical linebacker length but is very stout for his age and is a physical player. He has the athleticism to run around and play in space but is good at sticking his nose in traffic and playing between the tackles.   Spring Valley should post a talented defense in 2024 with Perdue being one of the leaders on that side of the ball.      A fresh face to know for Spring Valley this season is Boyle County (KY) transfer [player_tooltip player_id='971539' first='Marcus' last='Lewis'] who made his way across state lines to provide even more depth in the trenches for the Timberwolves. Lewis was ranked among the top offensive linemen in Kentucky's 2026 class by our KY site and you can see why from watching his sophomore tape. The first trait that immediately stands out when evaluating Lewis is his obvious 6'5 length that can't be taught. He'll need to keep growing into his large frame at his current 225 weight but defensive line may be where his future is brightest. Lewis moves well for his size with good footwork and quickness that gives him a great base to build on.
