There is no doubt that the 2023 Owasso football season was a roller coaster of a ride that featured a lot of points, a lot of wins and ultimately the retirement of one of the greatest high school football coaches this state has ever seen. The 2023 season would be Bill Blankenship's final season before announcing his retirement in December. He led the Rams to a 9-3 record and they would come up one game shy of another trip to the state title game. They ran into the Bixby buzzsaw in the semifinals and the season would come to an end with a 56-14 loss in Sand Springs. The season also started with a loss to Bixby but the Rams would immediately bounce back. They had an impressive win over Jenks the following week and went 2-2 to start the season. They would close the regular season on a six-game winning streak and carried that momentum into the playoffs. We mentioned how there were a lot of points. The Rams would average a little over 40 points per game and there were five games where they scored at least 50 points. They also gave up nearly 35 points per game so there were quite a few shootouts throughout the 2023 campaign. The Rams now shift their focus to the 2024 season and a new era of Owasso football will begin.

2024 OUTLOOK

When Blankenship announced his retirement at a December press conference, he also passed the keys to the Owasso football program to Antonio Graham. Blankenship's longtime assistant will be going into season one as head coach of the Rams this fall. But as we've found out following Blankenship's retirement, the 2023 season was a test run for Graham and some of the other coaches on staff. So when the 2024 season kicks off, Graham will technically be a first year head coach but he probably won't feel like one as much as he could. And Graham will also benefit from the Rams returning the majority of their starters on offense. Seven starters are back on offense, including quite possibly the best offensive line unit in the state. They have multiple guys that are committed to major college programs. They'll have a new quarterback but again, he'll benefit from having an offensive line that is stacked as he gets his feet wet. The defense brings back five starters on that side of the ball but this is not a defense that is lacking talent. And they have it in all three levels. But specifically on the line of scrimmage with the defensive line and then in the secondary. Owasso will once again test themselves with a tough early season schedule but that should set them up for success in October and beyond.

Owasso senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='350246' first='Blake' last='Cherry'] is the first of two outstanding 2025 offensive linemen that are returning to the Owasso this season. Cherry announced his commitment to Arkansas earlier this year and was recruited by plenty of power four programs over the last two seasons. Cherry has been on our radar for well over two years now. He's been considered one of the top guys at his position in the state's 2025 class for that entire time. Cherry proves that he's one of the best time after time and he's not alone on that Owasso offensive line. There's another 2025 standout and a younger guy on the rise. Cherry and the Ram O-line is stout.

Owasso sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1235926' first='Drew' last='Frankenfield'] appears to be the guy taking over the Owasso offense moving forward. From everything we've gathered on Frankenfield so far, the potential is very high for him in this Owasso offense. We know the Owasso coaches were and still are excited about him and like we mentioned earlier in the preview, Frankenfield will definitely benefit from having a very strong offensive line blocking for him while he gets used to playing at the highest level of Oklahoma high school football. We know that Frankenfield checks a lot of the boxes from a quarterback perspective. The only thing left is to check the QB1 box.

Owasso junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1045556' first='Jayson' last='Moll'] emerged as a breakout star for the Owasso offense last season. He would become their leading rusher in carries and yards and was flirting with the 1,000-yard mark last season. This year, he wants to go well over that and also lead the team in rushing touchdowns. We got a chance to see Moll up close and in person at our camp back in January and he was one of the best running backs in attendance. He certainly has the potential to elevate his game this season and become one of the state's best and not just in Class 6A-1. Moll was a breakout star for the Rams last season. This year, he plans on just being a star.

While a lot of attention surrounding Owasso centers around the offensive side of the line of scrimmage with their offensive line, don't overlook the other side of the ball. Senior defensive end [player_tooltip player_id='660345' first='Reece' last='Satterwhite'] returns at the defensive end position and this is a prospect that is absolutely flying under the radar in the state's 2025 class. Satterwhite has gone from a gem flying under the radar 18 months ago to one of the best at his position. Every time we've seen Satterwhite, it feels like he's significantly better than the last time. So when Satterwhite and this Owasso defensive line go to work this season, they expect to dominate and cause plenty of problems.

Joining Cherry on the Owasso offensive line is fellow senior [player_tooltip player_id='350245' first='Ryker' last='Haff'] and like Cherry, Haff has been considered one of the state's top guys at the position for over two years now. And like Cherry, Haff is already committed to play college football at a high level. Haff committed to Oklahoma State earlier this year and has remained loyal to the Cowboys. The Owasso senior is a dominant force on the line of scrimmage and we're fired up to see what he and Cherry do this season for their last dance. Haff has been a powerful lineman for a while now and nothing is going to change this season. Opponents will have their hands full with Haff and company.

As we mentioned with Satterwhite, this Owasso defensive line is not a unit to overlook. It's not surprising that they have some monsters on that side as they've been going head to head with a stout offensive line group. But junior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1179991' first='Tajh' last='Overton'] could be the best of all of them. Overton has quickly emerged as not only one of the best defensive lineman prospects in the state, but one of the best overall prospects. He's being recruited and offered by some of the major players in college football today and his options will continue to grow as we move forward. There are simply not many prospects in the 2026 class hotter than Overton in the last six months.

Aug. 30th - Bixby
- For the third consecutive season, Owasso will open the season against the Bixby Spartans. Only time will tell if this season ends with a meeting with Bixby for the third straight year. The Quiktrip-sponsored “Battle Of The Burbs” will once again kick off the season but the series has now shifted to a home and home instead of playing at TU's Chapman Stadium. The Rams will get the first home game between the two. These two are very familiar with one another after meeting in the season opener and then again in the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.
Sept. 6th - AT Jenks
Sept. 13th - AT Sand Springs
Sept. 27th - Broken Arrow
Oct. 4th - AT Union
- The schedule doesn't get much easier at the halfway mark of the regular season when the Rams hit the road to face Union. These two teams have absolutely dominated this district over the last decade and more times than not, the winner of this regular season meeting ends up claiming the district championship. But the district is certainly more difficult than we've seen in the past. The Redhawks got the best of the Rams last season but that was the only meeting. Don't be surprised if this week five contest ends up being the first of two meetings between these two.
Oct. 11th - Westmoore
Oct. 17th - AT Edmond Memorial
Oct. 25th - Edmond Santa Fe
- In week eight, the Rams will host Edmond Santa Fe and we can only hope that this year's meeting is half as exciting as last year's 57-53 Owasso win, which was one of the best games in 2023. The Rams trailed by double digits in the final minutes and would rally to win. Owasso QB Knox Dyson threw for over 500 yards and seven touchdowns, including the game-winner in the final minute. Both teams look quite different this year but they also feature several familiar faces from that 2023 meeting. Not to mention the outcome here will have major playoff implications.
Nov. 1st - AT Norman North
Nov. 8th - Yukon

When it comes to Oklahoma high school football, there is no doubt that the five Tulsa-area programs have dominated the state's largest class. Bixby, Broken Arrow, Jenks, Owasso and Union have combined for every single state title since 1996 in the state's largest class. They make up the “big five” in the Tulsa-area that have had a stranglehold on 6A and now 6A-1. And for the third consecutive season, the Rams will be tested by the other four teams in that group in the first half of the season. Bixby and Jenks are non-district opponents while Broken Arrow and Union will be district opponents. And with the exception of a week two clash against Sand Springs, those four teams will all provide major challenges to the Rams in the first five weeks of the season. In the last two seasons, the Rams are 3-5 against the other four in their regular season meetings. They'll look to turn that luck around this season and get off to a fast start.
