Throughout the month of February, Prep Redzone Oklahoma is updating our prospect rankings for each class. And for the state’s 2025 class, we’re updating the rankings and expanding it to 175 prospects. Earlier this week, we released the 2025 Top 175 and throughout the week, we’ll be putting the spotlight on different players and position groups. In this post, we’re putting that spotlight on the secondary with the defensive backs. Earlier this week, we broke down Beggs DB Ryan Grayson Ryan Grayson 6'0" | 160 lbs | DB Beggs | 2025 State OK in our Top Ten Spotlight. Owasso DB Eric Harris Eric Harris DB Owasso | 2025 State OK had the spotlight on him in our Top Stock Risers article. And Lawton MacArthur DB AJ Vaughn AJ Vaughn 6'1" | DB Lawton MacArthur | 2025 State OK was featured in our Top Newcomer article. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more prospect breakdowns within the 2025 class. And check back each Monday this month for another class update!
Ada defensive back Deante Lindsay Deante Lindsay 6’1″ | DB Ada | 2025 State OK is one of the top newcomers in the latest ranking update. We’re fired up to see more of him this offseason, between film or in person evaluations. Lindsay is the latest example of a prospect that came out of nowhere and picked up a D1 offer. He received his first offer in the last few weeks and now he’s on the radar. Oklahoma has the reputation of being a state with athletes that are overlooked. But a lot of that is just blown out of proportion. Lindsay is a good example of a prospect who can play at that level so coaches have found him. And Ada has some very talented pieces returning so they’ll be a good watch in 2024.
Jenks standout Sam Stone Sam Stone 6’0″ | DB Jenks | 2025 State OK is another newcomer to the rankings and we have him currently listed as a defensive back but there’s a lot of versatility to his game. He’s just as comfortable coming down and lining up at linebacker as he is backing up into the secondary and playing safety. Stone was a big part of the Jenks defense last season and had an outstanding performance in the state championship game. He’s one of several starters that return for a Jenks defense that could be the best in 6A-1 this fall. Stone certainly appears to be a next level talent but the only question surrounds the position. What will be his natural spot in college?
Shortly after the ranking update came out for the state’s 2025 class, we had instant regrets for Waleed Gaines Jr Waleed Gaines Jr 5’11” | 165 lbs | DB Mustang | 2025 State OK . and his spot within them. After the rankings, Gaines picked up his first D1 offer and we instantly thought he should be higher up. Gaines has shown that he has that ability to be a lockdown corner and he’s proven it against some of the best competition in the state. With his first offer now in the books, college coaches are starting to buy into that thought process as well. We’re looking forward to seeing more of Gaines this spring and summer and that first offer could be just the start for him when it comes to playing at the next level.
Union defensive back Ashton Cunningham Ashton Cunningham 5’9″ | 135 lbs | DB Union | 2025 State OK could have a very big spring and summer. He’s already having an outstanding offseason on the track and participating in 7v7 tournaments. Cunningham is one of the fastest prospects in the state’s 2025 class. He dominated in the indoor track state championships and has recorded some incredibly fast times. Cunningham could very well be the next up in terms of Union defensive backs that are primed for the next level. The Redhawks have done a very good job of producing those players over the last decade in the secondary. Cunningham should get a lot of attention from coaches this spring and summer.
Highlights
Piedmont standout Lane Whitworth Lane Whitworth 6’0″ | 180 lbs | DB Piedmont | 2025 State OK first got on our radar around this time last year. Whitworth came to our January camp and was one of the top performers. He tested well, performed well in the drills and made a lasting impression. Last summer, it looked like Whitworth was going to be moving to Deer Creek but he ended up staying at Piedmont. Now, as we look ahead to 2024, Piedmont is moving up to 6A-2 and Whitworth has the potential to be a big player for the Wildcats. Piedmont loses a very talented and experienced senior class. That’s going to open up the door for Whitworth to become a serious playmaker on both sides of the ball.
