The 2023 Carl Albert Titans came into this football season with unimaginable expectations. Not only was this a team that was supposed to capture another state championship, they were supposed to do it with an undefeated record and beat everyone they play by at least three touchdowns. It's a team full of superstar prospects and really good football players that do their job incredibly well. The top-ranked team in Class 5A met those expectations on Saturday afternoon with a 35-14 win over #2 Del City in a highly anticipated state championship game.

The defending champion Titans captured a back to back title, their seventh in the last eight years and it was the 18th time Carl Albert has raised the gold ball. That ties Jenks for the second most state championships in state history. Only Ada has more with 19. And you better believe, the Titans will go into the 2024 season expecting to be right back here and contending for that 19th state title.

The Titans came out swinging on Saturday. They put a good drive together on their first possession but a fumble would end it deep in Del City territory. They still struck first with a 39-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='432374' first='Kevin' last='Sperry'] to senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='360239' first='Xavier' last='Robinson'] to go up 7-0. Del City would immediately respond on their next drive. On fourth down, senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='215198' first='River' last='Warren'] found senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='393974' first='Rodney' last='Fields'] for a 25-yard touchdown.

Sperry added his second touchdown early in the second quarter after recovering a Del City fumble. He found fellow junior [player_tooltip player_id='377954' first='Marcus' last='James'] for a 26-yard touchdown. The Oklahoma quarterback commit would add a touchdown on the ground later in the second quarter with a 7-yard touchdown scamper. He finished the game 9-12 for 131 yards and two touchdowns with a little over 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Sperry was 7-7 in the first half and the Titans led 21-7 at halftime. The second half was anything but perfect for both teams. The first three possessions of the third quarter ended with interceptions. Del City would settle in halfway through the third quarter and scored on a perfect pass from Warren to Braelen Adamah for a 31-yard touchdown. But the Titans responded with a methodical drive that went into the fourth quarter and ended with a Robinson touchdown run. And the hammer came down later in the quarter when Robinson broke several tackles and then outran the Del City defense 65 yards for his third touchdown of the game.

Robinson finished with 133 yards and two touchdowns along with 64 receiving yards and a touchdown on three catches. He caps off a very special career with another state title and another special performance in Edmond. Carl Albert's defense was once again led by seniors [player_tooltip player_id='353419' first='Caden' last='Davis'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1099169' first='Easton' last='Harless'] in containing the explosive Del City offense. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='294261' first='Trey' last='Washington'] was also big with two interceptions in the end zone, keeping Del City from scoring. The Eagles were led by Fields at the running back position and then two-way star [player_tooltip player_id='215200' first='Ladainian' last='Fields'] at wide receiver and in the secondary. He finished with six catches for just over 100 yards, including some spectacular plays. And on defense, he had two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

We knew that this game featured some serious star power and it lived up to the hype for all four quarters. Carl Albert and Del City have been #1 and #2 in Class 5A all season and they were destined to square off for the gold ball. But in the end, it was the Titans raising another state championship. They met and exceeded all preseason expectations and now the hype begins for the 2024 Carl Albert football team.
