The 2023 football season is in full swing and it’s Fall Break for a lot of schools this week as we head into week seven. Every single Monday, we’re taking a look at the week’s ten best games across the state. Disclaimer, these games are listed in alphabetical order. There is no specific order for the ten best games every single week. But they feature the best match-ups and all of the top teams and players. The majority of games this week will take place on Thursday night with Fall Break. So the games listed below are on Thursday unless otherwise noted.
Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma throughout the week for more preview content of this week’s top games and players to watch. This week, we’ll have two practice reports with updates on Carl Albert and Mustang. We’ll also have several articles on the best freshmen across the state. This week kicks off our prospect ranking updates. We have our 2027 updates coming this week. And finally, we’ll have a spotlight on this week’s players to watch on Thursday and we’ll update the Player Of The Year Watchlist on Friday. And be sure to check back every Monday for another breakdown on the week’s top games across Oklahoma!
BISHOP McGUINNESS (4-2) AT #1 CARL ALBERT (7-0)
It’s the renewal of one of the best Class 5A rivalries over the last decade as #1 Carl Albert will host Bishop McGuinness. These teams are very familiar with one another and there’s definitely a lot of respect in this match-up but also no love lost. The Titans have been playing like defending champions all season and it was actually their win over Bishop McGuinness last year that was the turning point of their title season. Running back Xavier Robinson Xavier Robinson 6'2" | 225 lbs | RB Carl Albert | 2024 State OK had a great performance in that win and has been an absolute star again this year for the Titans. The Titans have been perfect this season but they will face a hungry McGuinness team. The Irish were shut out by Guthrie last week and they feel like their back is against the wall now heading into this big rivalry match-up.
#10 GORE (6-0) AT #9 CENTRAL SALLISAW (6-0) (FRI.)
There’s a few games in Class A this week that made it on our breakdown but arguably none bigger than this one on Friday night as #9 Central Sallisaw hosts #10 Gore in a massive district contest. We wrote about Gore last week as one of the surprise teams of the first half of the season. We did not anticipate this start from the Pirates at all. They made it to the state championship game a year ago but lost a very special senior class and their head coach. But the Pirates are right back in the mix again and can jump into the driver’s seat of the district with a win here. On the other side you have a Central Sallisaw squad that is off to one of their best starts in recent memory. But they are hungry to turn things around against a Gore team that has beat them in four straight years.
HINTON (5-1) AT #6 CRESCENT (5-0) (FRI.)
Another Class A clash happens here as #6 Crescent hosts Hinton on Friday night. But these two teams are coming off very different week sixes so it makes this one a little more interesting. Crescent had week six off after starting out 5-0 on the season. But Hinton would lose drop their first game on the year when they tripped up against Western Heights Friday night. For some context, with the win, Western Heights won their first game since 2019. So now, Hinton is looking to bounce back in a major way against one of the top teams in Class A and definitely in their district. But this week kicks off a tough stretch where they face #6 Crescent this week and #5 Minco next week. These two played a very close game last season with Crescent coming out on top with a 23-21 victory.
#6 KIEFER (6-0) AT #8 KANSAS (6-0)
Another game that involves two unbeaten teams features #6 Kiefer traveling to #8 Kansas. We mentioned Gore earlier as one of our surprise teams and you can put Kansas in that category as well. They immediately got our attention in week one when they upset Colcord in the final minute of the game. And the Comets have added even more depth to a district in 2A-7 that is absolutely loaded. Junior quarterback Seneca Steele Seneca Steele 6'4" | 195 lbs | QB Kansas | 2025 State OK is turning into a star and they have a ton of momentum after beating a talented Beggs team last week. On the other side you have a Kiefer team that expected to contend this year. Led by quarterback Jaxon Worley Jaxon Worley 6'3" | QB Kiefer | 2024 State OK , the Trojans have looked really good this season. The closest game was an 18-point win. This won’t decide the district but it is massive towards that goal.
#10 MOORE (4-2) AT #6 JENKS (3-3) (FRI.)
#6 Jenks welcomes in another west side team to Allan Trimble stadium on Friday night, where they are 0-2 this season against teams from the OKC area. #10 Moore comes to town and the Lions are looking to continue to make some noise. They are led by a pair of junior playmakers in CJ Simon CJ Simon 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Moore | 2025 State OK at wide receiver and Malikai Miller Malikai Miller 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Moore | 2025 State OK at quarterback. It feels like Moore has only played nailbiters this season with five of their six games being decided by a touchdown or less. Jenks responded to an upset loss to Westmoore with a beat down of Norman North on the road. Their young stars KD Jones KD Jones 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Jenks | 2026 State OK and Semaj Stanford Semaj Stanford 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Jenks | 2027 State OK shined bright in that game, as well as a stout defense that pitched a shutout until the starters came out. Jenks will lean on that defense against an explosive Moore offense.
#8 MUSTANG (4-2) AT #2 UNION (5-1) (FRI.)
Ever since tripping up on the road against rival Jenks, #2 Union has been lights out since district play began. Their next test comes this week as they host a Mustang team that is coming off back to back losses to Owasso and Edmond Santa Fe after starting the year 4-0. Union can’t afford to look ahead to next week’s showdown with Edmond Santa Fe on the road as this young but talented Mustang team has their backs against the wall. Union has been led all year by star quarterback Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK and he has put up some monster numbers this season. The Redhawks have been a machine this season since district play began and they’ll look to keep that going here. For Mustang, another loss will put them in danger of missing out on the playoffs all together this season.
#5 SAND SPRINGS (3-3) AT #9 PUTNAM CITY WEST (3-3)
#5 Sand Springs hits the road again for a tough district match-up against a very hungry Putnam City West team. The Sandites fell last week on the road against defending state champion Stillwater but they were competitive with the defending champs. Led by their two-headed monster at running back with Ali McCoy Ali McCoy 5'9" | RB Sand Springs | 2025 State OK and Kenneth Page Kenneth Page 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Sand Springs | 2024 State OK the Sandites have been able to dominate on the ground. They’ll look to continue that Thursday against a PC West team that started the year 3-0 but have dropped three in a row since district play began. With six teams from making it to the playoffs from each district, the Patriots aren’t already out of contention for a playoff spot, but they will certainly be playing like they are when they host Sand Springs. Both teams have some outstanding athletes and prospects.
#3 STILLWATER (4-2) AT #6 BARTLESVILLE (3-3)
Staying in Class 6A-2 with our next marquee match-up this week. The records wouldn’t indicate it as both of these teams are a combined 7-5 this season, but #3 Stillwater traveling to #6 Bartlesville is a pretty strong match-up for week seven. Both teams struggled to start with Stillwater beginning the year 1-2 while the Bruins went 0-3 in non-district play. But both teams have rolled since district play began and are 3-0 in the district standings. This game is a massive contest for playoff seed purposes and the winner is still going to be in contention for the district championship. The Bruins are led by superstar junior PJ Wallace PJ Wallace 6'1" | RB Muskogee | 2025 State OK who is having an outstanding season. And the Pioneers are finding their rhythm on offense, led by senior Holden Thompson Holden Thompson 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Stillwater | 2024 State OK at the running back position.
#5 SULPHUR (4-2) AT #7 LONE GROVE (4-2)
There are some really good districts out there but 3A-2 has to be the best of the best in Oklahoma right now. Just in case you missed our weekly ranking update (you can check it out right here) we have five teams from this district not only in the top ten but in the top eight. Only four can make the playoffs! So a good team will be left out. And both teams are playing with a lot of momentum right now. Sulphur bounced back from an 0-2 start by winning four straight games and they’ve looked really good during this four-game winning streak. Lone Grove is coming off a big win over Plainview in overtime and that vaulted the Longhorns into the top ten in Class 3A heading into this week. Lone Grove can’t afford another district loss and Sulphur is still in the running for the district crown.
WYANDOTTE (6-0) AT #3 COLCORD (5-1)
And finally, we go back to Class A for yet another showdown that could end up deciding the district championship. #3 Colcord hosts Wyandotte and the Bears come in with a lot momentum as they are 6-0 on the season. With a win, they’ll not only be in the driver’s seat for the district title, but they’ll jump into the Class A top ten and become one of the top contenders in the class. They are no strangers to close games and they’ll hope to compete with a Colcord team that is one of the favorites in Class A. Ever since being upset by Kansas in week one, Colcord has been dominating opponents. Senior quarterback Gabe Winfield Gabe Winfield 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Colcord | 2024 State OK has been one of the best quarterbacks in Class A. And this is a class that has some special players at the quarterback position. We’re looking forward to this one.
