We don’t see top-ranked teams squaring off against one another very often but Friday brought a rare opportunity to see that when 6A-2’s #1 Muskogee hosted 5A’s #1 Carl Albert. Not only was it an opportunity to see two of the best teams in the state and championship contenders, but both teams brought in plenty of firepower. In the end, early mistakes from the home team put Muskogee in a hole that Carl Albert wouldn’t let them out of and the Titans won 43-20.
The Titans opened the scoring with a drive that they made look easy and it was capped off with a five yard touchdown run from reigning PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year Xavier Robinson Xavier Robinson 6'2" | 225 lbs | RB Carl Albert | 2024 State OK at running back. Junior quarterback and OU commit Kevin Sperry Kevin Sperry 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Denton Guyer | 2025 TX was 4-4 on the opening possession and he was just getting started. Both teams exchanged punts on their next possessions and then Muskogee started having mistakes that Carl Albert took advantage of.
The Roughers had a wide open pass over the middle but the receiver had the ball bounce off his hands and right into the hands of a Carl Albert safety. The Titans would turn that turnover into points as Sperry found Trystan Haynes Trystan Haynes 6'2" | 165 lbs | ATH Carl Albert | 2025 State OK for a 53-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The Roughers would respond with a touchdown on an Israel Martin run from a few yards out to make it 14-7 Titans. Sperry would extend their lead when the Titans would take five minutes off the clock and he ran it in from a yard out on fourth down.
Muskogee had a chance to respond right before halftime and they were threatening to score. But a pass and catch that got the Roughers inside the Carl Albert 10-yard line with about a minute to go would end in disaster as Carl Albert’s Marcus James Marcus James 6'3" | ATH Carl Albert | 2025 State OK would strip the receiver and come up with the ball. Instead of scoring before halftime and getting the ball first in the second half, the Roughers had a 21-7 halftime deficit.
Muskogee went three and out on their first drive of the third quarter and Carl Albert would make the deficit bigger immediately. Sperry found Haynes again on a tunnel screen and he would go 45 yards to put the Titans up 29-7. The Roughers had another turnover when they couldn’t hang on to the kickoff and the Titans would convert on that turnover to make it 36-7 on a Sperry to Trey Washington Trey Washington 6'3" | WR Carl Albert | 2025 State OK touchdown pass. At that point, it was 36-7 halfway through the third quarter. Muskogee would add a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter but the Titans had done enough to secure the 20+ point victory.
Below, we take a look at the top individual performances from Carl Albert’s 43-20 victory. When you look at the Titans on paper, you can make the argument that these three standouts are the top three prospects on the team for the next level. They played like it on Friday night at different times throughout the highly-anticipated match-up.
CARL ALBERT’S TOP PERFORMERS
This was our first opportunity to really see Carl Albert junior quarterback and OU commit Kevin Sperry Kevin Sperry 6’2″ | 190 lbs | QB Denton Guyer | 2025 TX in a full game and he really impressed. He finished the game 15-19 for just under 300 yards and three touchdowns. Sperry also showed that he isn’t just a pocket passer and can use his legs when necessary and in some cases, when it’s by design. He finished with just over 50 yards on the ground and a touchdown on 13 carries. Sperry started red hot, completing his first five passes in a row as he was moving Carl Albert’s offense up and down the field. Then he had a stretch of four straight incompletions. He didn’t throw another one the rest of the way. He finished the game with ten consecutive completions while the Titans rolled to the 43-20 win. We knew Sperry was special and he showed why Friday.
There were a few times where Carl Albert junior star Trystan Haynes Trystan Haynes 6’2″ | 165 lbs | ATH Carl Albert | 2025 State OK caught a short pass and simply out ran the Muskogee defense and in the press box I would just say aloud: “That’s why Alabama and everyone else wants him.” Haynes is one of the top prospects in the state and he showed the speed that makes him just that. Haynes finished the game with five catches for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was Carl Albert’s leading receiver and it didn’t matter if it was a simple screen route or a play downfield, Haynes really impressed with his ability after the catch. The last time we saw him in person was at a scrimmage in August and he had somewhat of an off night. That was not the case against a Muskogee defense that was up for the challenge but they couldn’t contain Haynes and his speed.
Highlights
Before we get into Robinson’s performance we do have to tip our cap to Muskogee’s defense because they made the OU commit work for every single yard he got. But he was once again one of the best players on the field because they could always rely on him in short yardage situations. Robinson finished with 19 carries for 56 yards and two touchdowns. And the reigning PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year never got loose in the open field and his longest carry was just eight yards and he did it on back to back carries. The rest of the carries were just a few yards a piece as the Roughers made him work for everything. But again, when the Titans line up in their power formation with Robinson getting the direct snap, it’s hard to stop when they need a few yards or less.
