3A’s #1 Heritage Hall opened up their 2023 football season with a dominant 47-24 win over 2A’s #2 Millwood on Thursday night. This match-up featured two teams that played for state championships a season ago and have state title aspirations this year. Millwood was short-handed with star two-way player Micho Lavine Micho Lavine 6'3" | 210 lbs | ATH Millwood | 2024 State OK missing as well as junior wide receiver Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6'4" | WR Douglass | 2025 State OK sitting out the first quarter and it showed in the first half as the Millwood offense struggled to move the ball. On the other side of the match-up, the Chargers could not be slowed down when they had the ball.
On the first drive, Heritage Hall made it look easy with six plays and ended with an Andy Bass Andy Bass 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK touchdown pass to Rhett Davis. Millwood would go three and out on their first drive and they would either turn the ball over or go three and out on their first five possessions of the game. The only drive in the first half that didn’t end with a turnover or a three and out, the Falcons ran out of time as the second quarter came to a close.
Heritage Hall jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first half behind three touchdown passes from Bass as well as a rushing touchdown. He had a 91-yard touchdown run negated by a penalty in the first quarter and a few plays later he uncorked an 89-yard touchdown pass to Jordyn Harris Jordyn Harris 6'1" | 165 lbs | DB Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK . Rashaud Smith Rashaud Smith 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK also caught a touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter and that came after he came up with an interception on defense in the first quarter.
Millwood’s offense came alive in the second half as they would start putting some points on the board but the first half hole was too much to overcome and nobody was stopping Bass on Thursday night. He finished with well over 400 yards of total offense and six total touchdowns in the win. The Falcons would add three touchdowns in the second half, including a short touchdown run from quarterback CJ Turnbull CJ Turnbull 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Millwood | 2026 State OK and then a magnificent touchdown pass from Turnbull to Nickens. Turnbull was getting hit all night and the sophomore quarterback never backed down from continuing the fight.
HERITAGE HALL’S TOP PERFORMERS
There’s no doubt that Heritage Hall senior quarterback and Oklahoma commit Andy Bass Andy Bass 6’0″ | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK was the best player on the field from the very first snap. He put up some monster numbers and Heritage Hall fans should get used to seeing stat lines like this throughout the 2023 season. Bass finished the game 22-30 for nearly 350 yards and three touchdowns. He also added nearly 100 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. As we mentioned earlier in the breakdown, Bass had a 91-yard rushing touchdown negated by a penalty but he made up for that a few plays later with an 89-yard touchdown pass. Bass was outstanding from the start of the game and he’s a big reason why the Chargers are the favorites to repeat in 3A.
Highlights
We first got a chance to see Heritage Hall 2025 running back Barrett Travis Barrett Travis 6’1″ | RB Heritage Hall | 2025 State OK last season in the season opener against Millwood. He impressed us that night and he was a player to watch in this match-up heading into this week. Bass was very clearly the player of the game but Travis wasn’t far behind with his ability in all three phases of the game. On offense, Travis finished with nearly 70 yards and a touchdown on ten carries. On defense, Travis was a very productive linebacker and was pretty consistent throughout the night. And then Travis even had an impact in special teams that made him a complete player. Travis looks like he’s going to be the perfect compliment to Bass in the Charger backfield.
The last time we saw Heritage Hall 2026 standout Jerrod Williams Jerrod Williams 5’11” | DB Heritage Hall | 2026 State OK with the pads on was the state championship win over Metro Christian where Williams led the team in tackles. Williams had a good offseason and he’s come back this fall determined to become one of the best defensive backs in the state. Williams also made plays on offense as a wide receiver but he makes this breakdown because of his defense at the cornerback position. Williams was in a lot of 1 on 1 situations against some really good wide receivers. And the majority of the time he was tested, Williams came out on top in those match-ups. We didn’t know much of anything about Williams last season but it’s clear that he’s going to be important.
Heritage Hall 2024 wide receiver and defensive back Rashaud Smith Rashaud Smith 6’0″ | 175 lbs | WR Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK had a fantastic start to his senior season on both sides of the ball. On offense, Smith finished with three catches for nearly 50 yards and a touchdown to kick off the second quarter. It was an outstanding catch in the back of the end zone that helped the Chargers put Millwood in a hole that they could not crawl out of. Smith also came up big earlier in the game on the defensive side of the ball with an interception that continued Millwood’s offensive woes. Smith appeared to come up banged up on that interception but he was able to return to the game and make that touchdown catch and several more big plays for Heritage Hall.
Like Travis, we mentioned Heritage Hall senior defensive lineman Zavier Freeman Zavier Freeman 6’2″ | DL Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK as a player to watch earlier in the week in our “Scene Setter” preview of this match-up. Freeman was an absolute force up front. He was incredibly productive on the line of scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball and he made a living in the Millwood backfield. Freeman isn’t the biggest defensive lineman but he has the skills to play at the next level. He’s incredibly productive, it doesn’t matter where he lines up, he always finds a way to make plays. It seemed like every other play he was in on the tackle and was a big reason why Millwood’s offense struggled in the first half. We like Freeman’s game and think he is a 2024 DL to watch.
