This past weekend, we were on hand in Plano, Texas for the DR 7v7 event from start to finish. The only Oklahoma team in attendance in the high school divisions was Sooner 7’s program with two 18U teams and a 15U team. We caught every game from those squads and have spotlights on all of the top performers from the two days in north Texas. In this post, we’re taking a look at five of the top standouts we saw from the Sooner 7 “Blue” 18U team. Check out the links below to read up on some of the other standouts from Sooner 7’s other teams down in Texas.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Almost all of my coverage is limited to Oklahoma programs and players but arguably the top offensive weapon we saw this weekend among the 18U division was Bentonville 2024 wide receiver CJ Brown CJ Brown 6’2″ | 190 lbs | ATH Bentonville | 2024 State AR out of Arkansas. We’ve seen Sooner 7 in two tournaments so far this offseason and Brown is always one of the top performers. It’s not surprising that he’s considered one of the top overall prospects in the Arkansas 2024 class. The thing that impressed me about Brown was the variety in which he torched opposing defenses all weekend. Short routes, intermediate routes or deep routes, Brown got open and made plays. Even when he was draped in defenders, he would find a way to make a catch in traffic. Brown is definitely a name that we’ll be watching throughout the rest of the 7v7 season. Even though he’s an Arkansas prospect, he’s been an absolute star.
If you’ve been following this website at any point in the last year, you already know that in our opinion, Edmond Memorial 2025 quarterback David McComb David McComb 6’3″ | 215 lbs | QB Edmond Memorial | 2025 State OK has the chance to be one of the higher rated quarterbacks to come out of Oklahoma in recent memory. There is a lot of football between now and when he signs on the dotted line in two years. But as he showed again this weekend, he has the arm talent to be one of the best quarterbacks in the state. The ball just absolutely launches out of his hand and the accuracy on some of the deep balls is really impressive to watch. We’re standing about five to ten yards behind the quarterback on every throw and there was one fade to the back corner of the end zone where McComb just effortlessly flicked his wrist and it was right where it needed to be. Based on mechanics, footwork, etc. it should not have been perfect but it was. He’s a fun quarterback to watch.
Highlights
The first of two Muskogee 2024 standouts is defensive back Jayden Swanson Jayden Swanson 6’0″ | DB Muskogee | 2024 State OK and it’s hard not to be impressed with the work that Swanson has put in during the last two tournaments. Swanson was once again one of the better cover corners that we watched throughout the weekend in Plano. As we always mention when it comes to 7v7 tournaments, the defensive players have to be special to really stand out as 7v7 is naturally an offensive player’s game. But Swanson has put back to back tournaments in where he has been outstanding at the cornerback position and he’s a prospect in the 2024 class that we definitely want to see more of as the we get further into the spring months. Swanson is a really good athlete and does a good job sticking to his man and making a play on the ball at the right time. He also showed some leaping ability on some big plays down the field as well to prevent touchdowns.
We can’t say enough good things about Muskogee two-way star Kayden McGee Kayden McGee 6’1″ | WR Muskogee | 2024 State OK and he’s continuing to show why he’s one of the more underrated 2024 prospects in the state. On McGee’s Twitter, his name is Kayden “BIG PLAY” McGee. A lot of times, some of the social media stuff is just nonsense. This is not one of those times. I feel like every time I see McGee in person, the kid is making plays. And I’m talking about big plays that change momentum of the game or even win the game for his team. Whether it’s on offense or defense, McGee is so fun to watch because you know there’s a good chance that something special is about to happen. And we continue to be conflicted with what he is at the next level. We love his production at wide receiver but his skills at safety are continuing to evolve and he’s starting to be just as productive on that side of the ball and his stock as a prospect continues to rise.
The recent Oklahoma State commit was on top of his game once again this weekend. Southeast 2024 running back Rodney Fields Rodney Fields 6’0″ | RB Del City | 2024 State OK was a massive threat down the field for Sooner 7 and they used him so well throughout the weekend. Time after time, they’ll have Fields streaking down the hashes and with the safeties worrying about different corner routes, it leaves Fields in a one on one situation with a linebacker and it’s over at that point. No linebacker is going to keep up with Fields on a go route and he caught several touchdowns with the same play on Saturday and Sunday. Another underrated part about Fields is he will turn around and play defense and that speed and quick lateral movement made him a solid contributor on defense as well. I’ve seen Fields in person three times in the last five weeks and it feels like every time I see him perform, I walk away even more impressed.
