Seeing Swiney register as a walk up at camp was a welcomed-surprise. I saw Swiney in early December at AYF Nationals in Florida, as he played for a member of the Brick City Lions 13U squad this season. In Florida he was an obvious standout on a very good team and I listed him as an ATH. However, after watching him play this weekend, I changed him to a defensive back. I watched the defensive backs very closely during the first individual period, and the two words I wrote down next to Swiney’s name were “speed” and “angles”. Before I even saw his 4.95 in the forty and 4.53 in the shuttle–both of which were near the top amongst defensive backs–I could see he was dropping back quickly and gaining ground on angle better than others. He performed best in off-man coverage, but with some more work in the weight room, it’s a skill he’ll get more comfortable with, as he gets physically stronger.
