, who makes the move from Delbarton to Paramus Catholic. With that transfer, Paramus Catholic strengthens an already talented secondary and adds another instinctive playmaker to the back end.
What immediately separates Chaz is his instincts at safety.
Whether he lines up in two-high or rotates into a single-high look, he consistently locates the football. More importantly, he stays disciplined. He rarely drifts out of position, and as a result, he constantly puts himself in range to make plays on the ball. He trusts his eyes, breaks with urgency, and finishes.
Once the ball hits his hands, he turns into a wide receiver.
He catches naturally and transitions upfield without hesitation. Additionally, he creates explosive plays after interceptions and flips the field position in a hurry. On special teams, he shows that same burst as a kick returner, routinely giving his offense short fields.
Although he primarily plays defensive back, he also has legitimate offensive upside. Therefore, it will be fascinating to see how Paramus Catholic deploys him. He fits seamlessly as another piece in their defensive structure, yet his athleticism absolutely gives them the flexibility to use him on offense if needed.
Ultimately, Chaz adds versatility, ball production, and intelligence to a championship-caliber roster. Now, stepping into a program built to compete deep into November, he positions himself to shine on an even bigger stage.

There might not have been a single freshman in the state that played at as high a level or contributed as much to varsity as Delbarton’s Chaz Cusimano. The young safety/nickel corner was credited with 37 tackles and 4 picks this last year. What makes Cusimano a tough defender to beat is how well he runs in his backpedal. This allows him to get sufficient break, but it is his tendency to drive through the receiver’s body that has allowed him to break up passes – often fighting over their back. Like any great two-way safety, we see Cusimano fly up in the ally in the run to either force a cutback or make the play himself. A basketball background might be in his history too, as we see the the 2028 graduate play the tip drill and come up with deflections. I saw more than a few instances on film of Cusimano opening up his hips. He apparently watches film, as we see him avoid getting picked on rub routes. Lastly, he is a full-speed ahead type of player who does wait for his teammates to make plays and is a real good wrapper when tackling. I do, however, wish to see him cover and run deep – something absent on film.

Find me another freshman performing at this high of a level on a very successful team. Playing a major part on Delbarton’s defense,

has stepped right into a varsity role and has not skipped a beat. A star at the safety position, Chaz seems to always be at the right place at the right time. With the 3 interceptions he has on the season, Chaz either screamed up field to jump the route or was overtop in the right position to close in on the receiver. Chaz is extremely quick in getting out of his back peddle and coming back up field, forcing QB’s to misjudge the openness of their receiver. You can tell Chaz was coached extremely well and has focused on perfecting his technique, as there is very little to critique in how he plays the position. From what I’ve seen so far, in my mind Chaz is the top safety coming out of NJ in 2028. Delbarton has their toughest opponent to date on Saturday, as they square off against the number 1 team in the state in Bergen Catholic.

as of late, and it’s all for good reason. I had a feeling a Delbarton freshman would see the field this season, but I was not expecting one to make such a big impact in their first game at the varsity level. Chaz made his presence known early in his career as he racked up 6 tackles and picked off the ball as well. All of Chaz’ hard work in the offseason is paying off on the field. He balled out at multiple camps and combines and really elevated his status by competing with the best the state and country has to offer. Chaz’s quick reaction time, buttery smooth hip movement, and acceleration out of a back peddle really sets him up to be a top defensive back in the class. This is a player I think will get offers early on in his career.

is your man. Running a speedy 4.69 40 and 4.47 for the 5-10-5, Chaz is an electric wideout made to fly by the secondary and use his agility to break quickly on a route. Multiple times this weekend you’d find a defender getting tripped up in their back peddle as Chaz shook them up with a decisive change of direction. Often times he’d get the defender’s hips turned and convinced he’s heading downfield, just to make a 180 degree turn and be left wide open.
Not only was Chaz recognized on the offensive side of the ball, be thrived as one of the top DB’s at the combine as well. It is impossible to box Chaz into one position when he can flourish anywhere on the field. I was impressed with how quickly Chaz could open his hips up and get out of his back peddle when facing off against the wide receivers on this list. He has the ability to turn and run with the best of them. It will be interesting to see how Delbarton utilizes Chaz at the high school level. They are getting a multidimensional talent in

Up until the Prep Redzone Next New Jersey Middle School Camp I thought of Cusimano as almost exclusively a defensive back prospect. However at camp, the 5-foot-10, 145-pounder showed off a ton of skill and ability on the offensive side of the ball, as a wide receiver. The benefits of selecting the right camps to attend go deep, but being able to see Cusimano fly around the field in close proximity really made me stop and take note. I knew he had ball skills and a finesse side to his well-balanced game, but watching him crisply break off routes, he showed off a significantly more technical side to his game. He was able to get in and out of his break very quickly. Did not round off his routes, nor did he lose speed by moving too much approaching his breaks. Cusimano also showed the ability to shake a defender in close range. I still think defense is where he’ll ultimately end up, but the kid can play offense too. Since camp, he recently announced that he will be attending Delbarton for high school. The Green Wave got a good one here.

– Played for Matawan/Silk City
– Well-traveled athlete who goes everywhere in the state to compete
A reclassed kid that has gone from being very good last year, to one of the best in the state this season. Could probably be listed as an athlete, but I take a special liking to him in the secondary. He has good natural instincts and uses his eyes well in the secondary. Covers a good amount of ground in quick order, when deciding to attack the ball/man.

Cusimano is a tough nose safety who isn’t afraid to come down and make a big hit on a ball carrier. The height advantage shows for him on the offensive side of the ball when in jump ball situations and it doesn’t matter if he’s doubled covered he’ll go up and get it. I was impressed with plays he made lining up in the camp and 7v7 circuit a year ago. Not only does he make big plays versus local competition but he excels when playing against top players in the state and country. Cusimano is not afraid of competition and can be a big threat on both sides of the ball at the high school level in the next few years.
