. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman for Frederick Douglass, his size makes him a natural gap filler when he plays nose guard. Bates has proven to play anywhere along the DL, too. One thing that stood out about Bates on tape was that he consistently provided pressure, regardless of his position. He can shed blocks and affect the play with his size and power. Received his first Division I offer from Miami (OH) earlier this month.

Bates has a big, strong frame and shows good agility for his size. He does a nice job shedding blockers to either side and working his way to the football. He can also slip between offensive linemen if they’re not quick enough getting into position, allowing him to create penetration up front. He understands when to get his hands up in passing lanes and can even block field goals because of his size and timing. He’s a good run stuffer who can clog things up inside and force offenses to account for him every snap. I think he helps elevate the players around him because of the matchup problems he creates up front.
