To round out the defensive line, I have Preston Bates Preston Bates 6'3" | 275 lbs | DL Frederick Douglass | 2028 State KY . Bates is a versatile defensive lineman who has shown the ability to line up both as a true nose and in a shade as a defensive tackle. Against the run, Bates has shown the ability to use his strength to hold his ground when taking on double teams and to fight through blocks on his way to the ball carrier. Once he gets through the block, he has shown the speed to get to the ball carrier in a hurry to make the tackle in the open field. He has also shown the ability to put pressure on the quarterback, recording a sack and multiple quarterback pressures last season. Preston holds offers from Miami (OH), West Virginia State, Glenville State, and Kentucky State, and I expect that list to continue to grow over the next couple seasons.

Size is no issue for Preston Bates Preston Bates 6'3" | 275 lbs | DL Frederick Douglass | 2028 State KY . The 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman for Frederick Douglass, his size makes him a natural gap filler when he plays nose guard. Bates has proven to play anywhere along the DL, too. One thing that stood out about Bates on tape was that he consistently provided pressure, regardless of his position. He can shed blocks and affect the play with his size and power. Received his first Division I offer from Miami (OH) earlier this month.

Bates has a big, strong frame and shows good agility for his size. He does a nice job shedding blockers to either side and working his way to the football. He can also slip between offensive linemen if they’re not quick enough getting into position, allowing him to create penetration up front. He understands when to get his hands up in passing lanes and can even block field goals because of his size and timing. He’s a good run stuffer who can clog things up inside and force offenses to account for him every snap. I think he helps elevate the players around him because of the matchup problems he creates up front.
