King has really come on in the 2nd half of the season has gone along, and it’s not a coincidence the Patriots have been playing their best football with his ascension. King had a touchdown catch on the first drive where he caught a hitch, eluded a cornerback, and used his strength and speed to take it 20 yards to the end zone. Throughout the game, King had a couple of impressive high-point catches over a smaller cornerback that really showed the strengths of his game. He’s turning into a player who can be a late steal for a college football program. I spoke with King after the game.

Another transfer receiver, Rhodes blew me away in garbage time of a playoff loss with Charlotte Catholic against eventual state-champion Grimsley. When forced to go to a pure passing attack, the offense turned into “Throw it up to Rhodes” and he came down with catch after catch. Now in a more pass-heavy, non-Wing-T offense, his opportunities should increase. I think he’s a fall offer candidate.

At Charlotte Catholic, Rhodes was a bailout receiver, a guy who wasn’t asked to do much other than make long catches on vertical routes if the offense had to deviate from its traditional run-heavy play-calling. I saw him do that against the best team in the state as he caught everything that came his way in the second half of an eventual blowout loss to Grimsley. Now at Independence, I’m interested to see how he develops his route tree and becomes a more complete receiver.
