Bates is one of the more athletic and violent pass blockers across the region, and moves extremely well for his size with great feet, strong hands and a violent finish in the run game while able to get out and block in space. He had a terrific Spring evaluation period and turned heads from visiting coaches while picking up his first few offers over the last several months. Coming off a state championship winning season for the Diablos, Bates holds offers from Hawaii, Houston, NAU and New Mexico State and remains one of the top uncommitted linemen from across the Southern California region.

Bates is a good run blocker who gets his hands on people and is strong. He is an effective puller and does a good job not leaning forward too much or over-pursuing against speedy linebackers.

As a pass blocker, I like him better as a guard than at tackle. His sets are better from the inside and his hips are always square. He can play tackle or guard at the high school level but his future as a college player is on the interior.

Bates has offers from New Mexico State and Northern Arizona.
