Expert Analysis
Brian Phillips | Prep Redzone Scout
JD is ranked as a top 10 DL in New England for good reason. The James Madison commit has a strong athletic profile. JD is all of 6’4 but moves with great mobility and knee bend. He has long arms and creates separation at the LOS to create leverage. His quick feed and acceleration make him a problem for opposing OL.

was 6’4″ in height and weighed 268 pounds. During testing, he was measured with an arm length of 34 and a hand size of 9.5. He recorded an 8-foot 4-inch Broad jump but did not test in the 40-yard sprint test. His ability to bend was obvious during drill periods. He has a very good frame that pops with low pad level he delivers each rep. He is currently ranked as the #9 DL in the class of 2025 in New England and has IVY league and Group of 5 offers.

2023 Film Review: JD has a quick feet and can burst into the backfield effortlessly. He plays with a low pad level, and can get around the edge to make plays in the backfield. He can take on larger offensive lineman, and has fast feet when looping or stunting. JD uses his long arms to create separation at the line and reach ball carriers when tackling. On offense, he has strong hands and can block players into the second level or the boundary. He plays to through the whistle, and brings solid athleticism to every play. His skills help him more on defense, but JD is a contributor wherever he lines up.

Film Review Notes: A pleasure to view “Rayner’s” mid-season tape. Especially after viewing him in a live game setting earlier this season. In a live game setting, he caught my attention with his ability to get off the ball while positioned in the tight-end position with a very low center of gravity and deliver effective downblocks that open massive holes. His film shows many clips of him executing these types of blocks on offense. He also shines on defense being an effective defensive lineman with long range that he uses to create havoc in opponent’s backfields. He uses very good leverage to get movement on his target. He posses a lean muscular frame. His measurables align with being an FBS power 5 defensive lineman potential prospect.

- t
- impressive, desirable build
- 6’5, 250
- designated as a DL, tape starts off with Rayner blocking as an in-line TE.
- might not be a prototypical EDGE rusher, but he’s a hell of a gap controller at DE. Makes sense especially when kicked inside to align in B-gaps.
- Catholic Memorial’s OL unit is athletic, yet Rayner can be the extension to the OL that is athletic enough to be the lead and/or second-level blocker necessary to break open big runs for Dodd.
- seen running routes out of a three-point stance, is seasoned in this area which many TE prospects on our ranks can’t say they are.
- Powerful hands that don’t slide off of pads, can steer kids after they falter from his first punch.
- Most reps at ILTE
