The Rutgers University commit did not have a huge night statistically, but he did a lot of the dirty work, blocking on the edges all game long to help keep the Whirlies’ offense on the move. The one catch DJ did have was a nice one on a tight end dump play, where he was able to pull it in with one hand and gave the Whirlies a first down. DJ’s one catch was for a total of 12 yards.

Howerton has borderline freakish athleticism and yet thrived by often being forgotten over the middle of the field. He lived on pop passes and jump balls over the middle. He’s athletic enough to flex out wide and has enough speed as a long-strider to break away when he finds space. He’s an underrated blocker with long arms and good drive, but make no mistake, he’s a modern athletic tight end.

Playing on one of the best teams in the state of North Carolina, DJ didn’t necessarily get a ton of balls thrown his way, but what this young man put on film has caused a meteoric rise in our rankings. When you see a 6’6 two-sport star (he is a basketball player also) block as well and as aggressively as DJ in the run game, it gets you excited. DJ was used as both an in-line and H-Back/Move blocking TE in the run game and was excellent. On the few balls thrown his way, DJ showed strong hands and good athleticism in space. DJ currently has 8 Division 1 offers since April, and there’s no doubt more are going to come his way.
