Smith flies under the radar, but he’s a prototypical corner on a fun defense. He’s long, physical, and has great ball skills. His lower tackle number isn’t due to any deficiency in his game. Rather, other teams rarely look his way, so he doesn’t make a lot of tackles in coverage.
One of the best corners in zone coverage, he has excellent feel for both what receivers are doing and what the picture looks like behind him in coverage. He has excellent length and enough speed to match up with quicker receivers, as well as the size to counter larger wideouts. A multi-time stock-riser for us, he continues to move up our rankings.
Smith is a strong, technically sound corner with some decent athletic upside. He’s not the flashiest guy, but he has excellent coverage skills and understands what offenses are doing. He’s quick to pass off or pick up receivers when in zone coverage, and he isn’t afraid to hit either.
A physically-impressive rising junior, Smith had a strong sophomore season and looks like he could make another jump as a junior. He has good speed and coverage skills and isn’t afraid to hit either. He plays a lot of zone coverage and he passes off receivers well, rarely getting beaten by route concepts designed to put pressure on the secondary. His physical upside makes him a candidate to move up in the rankings.
I thought Darius was impressive in his Week 1 game film. First off, Darius shows he is a physical outside corner, delivering sure tackles and big hits on two occasions in particular – one was in the open field against a wide receiver, the other on a quarterback from the completely opposite side of the field, showing great hustle. Darius also shows some good vertical skills, having a pass breakup in a jump ball situation, and playing through the wide receiver’s hands. I think as Darius improves his overall speed, he has the look of a good corner on the high school level. He is on his way to being ranked in our next ranking updates.
