Hanks is unusually athletic with a large dose of physicality. That helps him disrupt the proceedings of opposing offenses on a regular basis. What attracted colleges to him was a projectable frame and notable ceiling. The next step on that journey happens this season in Cedar Falls, where he’ll be playing free with a Utah State commitment in the bank. An offseason of training will have Hanks prepared for a memorable senior year, when the Tigers should be a formidable group. For his part, Hanks shuts down a lot of turf with a all-around skill set designed to bow up against the rush and run with pass catchers in coverage. Long arms create small windows for quarterbacks.
Hanks caught my attention last season with his performance at Liberty. It was good getting to scout him again in the 2025 season-opener back at Liberty. The junior is a modern-day linebacker, a quick athlete that can get physical. Hanks showed that against the Lightning, running sideline to sideline and firing forward through gaps. Once he identifies the play, Hanks is very fast to the football, getting downhill in a hurry. He’s a fundamentally sound tackler, breaking down the ball carrier and dropping him in his tracks. Hanks’ athleticism allows him to stick with receivers in coverage. The arrow is definitely pointing up for Hanks, who is already among the best 2027s in Iowa.
Hanks is dedicated to training and maximizing his abilities through sharpening his skills. He puts time in and it shows when watching his sophomore highlight video. Hanks displays his explosiveness on the first clip, where he blitzes up the middle and nails the quarterback. The second play has him dropping into coverage and picking off a pass. Versatility at linebacker is a strength and a great foundation for his future as someone reliable in multiple ways. Hanks racked up 53.5 tackles (35 solo, 5.5 TFL) and 2.5 sacks as a 10th-grader in one of the state’s top programs. The ceiling is high here.
