Isaiah had a very strong off-season, and it has carried over to the field in a big way so far this year. His speed in the middle of the Mavericks defense has been really impressive and helped slow down some very talented teams on offense so far this year. Isaiah is also one of the hardest hitters I’ve seen in a while. He relishes making contact, and that’s a bit of a throwback ability you don’t see as much these days from players. His consistency has allowed the Mavericks to be in the position to contend for a conference title.
We had a great time speaking with Mallard Creek LB Isaiah Johnson who had an incredible game last week with 15 Tackles, 4 Tackles For Loss, and 3 Sacks! pic.twitter.com/21c58lUJM6
Johnson flashed last year on a deep defense, but really made a name for himself in the offseason. Now, he’ll need to prove that he’s a consistent high-level defender on a down-to-down basis. He has elite closing speed, and as he grows in his processing, he has the potential to be both an elite run defender and a high-upside coverage linebacker.
Can we call someone a breakout candidate if he’s already exploded onto the scene in the offseason? Johnson was one of our highest-ranked debutants in our most recent 2028 class rankings after putting up some unreal testing numbers at the Under Armour Next Camp in Charlotte. He’s going to contribute in a big way in 2026 and has the defensive versatility to play in various alignments and personnel groupings.
A hybrid linebacker/safety who could ultimately end up ranked as a defensive back due to his coverage skills, Johnson flew under our radar before winning a camp MVP award at the Under Armour Next camp this offseason. He moves well, and he’s added some good weight without losing any lateral quickness. I’d love to scout him in person this season.
