It’s team camp season and we’re out in full swing all over Oklahoma, checking out some of the state’s best teams and their players. Be sure to check back every day as we’ll have more camp reports coming out. On Wednesday, we were in Edmond to check out Santa Fe’s team camp where they hosted Norman North, PC North, and Jenks. We were impressed with several teams throughout the session. We went in with a few names circled and left with a list that was easily 2x as long! Stay tuned to the site for our defensive standouts article later in the week. For now, let’s take a look at some of the players that impressed us the most on offense.
[player_tooltip player_id="101407" first="Amaurion" last="Norment"] - 2022 Running Back - Putnam City North
Norment, one of a few running backs on this list, had a pretty productive day early in the morning during the inside zone run session against Norman North and Santa Fe. The Senior back put his vision and agility on display for us as he did an excellent job of waiting for his blockers to create lanes for him before he exploded into the second level and made guys miss on his own.
Chapman McKown - 2023 Running Back - Norman North
With Gabe Trevilllison graduated, Norman North will have a new starting RB in 2021. As of now, it looks like it is McKown’s job to lose. Chapman did not have many long runs on Wednesday, but when he got the ball the defense was on their toes because of his ability to make defenders miss and eat up yards in a hurry. At 5’7" 160 pounds, he is not the biggest RB in the state, but with his agility and straight-line speed, it does not matter once he’s at the second level. McKown could see a massive leap in production in 2021 if his OL can get him some clean running lanes.
[player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"] - 2022 Quarterback - Norman North
After seeing Frakes light it up at a few 7v7 tournaments this spring, we were excited to finally see him in pads, even if he was limited in terms of contact due to his position. Unfortunately, Frakes did not have a ton of time to process plays or settle in on Wednesday during the live scrimmage portion due to the pass rush of a few teams in attendance. They were in Norman North’s backfield on multiple occasions. Nevertheless, it is only June, so we are not too concerned about Gavin or Norman North’s offense. Though he was pressured often, Gavin seemed unphased from play to play as he still made some very impressive throws on the run in the live-action portion and from the pocket during the 1on1 sessions.
Glenny Jones - 2022 Wide Receiver - Jenks
Every season it seems like there are a few players for Jenks on both sides of the ball who seemingly come out of nowhere because of the depth the Trojans have year in and year out. Though we had already gotten familiar with Jones at a few 7v7 tournaments, I was still pleasantly surprised when watching him and a few other guys who got their shot with the starters on Wednesday. At the camp, Jones showed off a lot of what we loved from him this spring such as his explosiveness, agility, and his crispness in and out of his cuts. However, when the pads came on, we saw a whole other dimension to Glenny’s game. He was not the biggest WR at the camp, but he had some of the most impressive catches on jump balls where he did an excellent job of going up and high pointing the ball at the right time, and he flashed some nice hand usage off the line and through his routes to create additional separation from defenders. There were not many reps where a DB got the better of him physically.
[player_tooltip player_id="38737" first="Hayden" last="Hack"] - 2022 Wide Receiver - Norman North
Over the course of this off-season, mainly at 7v7 tournaments, we’ve seen [player_tooltip player_id="38737" first="Hayden" last="Hack"] and [player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"] develop quite the QB-WR connection. On Wednesday, it was evident that the connection has already carried over to the high school gridiron. Hack played some DB as well throughout the day but we were impressed the most by his efforts on offense. On multiple occasions, he flashed the ability to out-leverage defenders and get open deep or create just enough space for Frakes to drop it in the bucket for a huge gain. This duo is certainly one to keep an eye on heading into the fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="47955" first="Jaiden" last="Carroll"] - 2023 Running Back - Jenks
Wednesday was our first glimpse of Carroll in a Jenks uniform and he did not disappoint. The Junior transfer from Booker T Washington split carries most of the day with fellow Junior Jalyn Stanford in what looks to be a deadly 1-2 punch heading into 2021. Jaiden ran with the same decisiveness and power that we’ve loved over the past 2 seasons, but he also showed off a little more wiggle at the second level than we’ve seen in the past, and it looked like he’s gained a step or two from a pure speed perspective. It was also notable that he played fairly well when Jenks’ coaches lined him up at outside linebacker and corner for a few series during the half field scrimmage sessions.
[player_tooltip player_id="38806" first="Milton" last="White"] - 2023 Offensive Lineman - Jenks
When we did our positional big boards during NFL Draft season a few months ago, [player_tooltip player_id="38806" first="Milton" last="White"] was one of the O-Linemen who ended up just outside the cut for the top 10 in the state. However, I was reminded on Wednesday that he is still indeed one of the best interior linemen in Oklahoma. Milton played both guard and center for Jenks throughout the day and was constantly driving guys to the sideline or straight into the ground on run plays. There will be a few new faces along the line and in the backfield for Jenks in 2021, but if Wednesday was any indicator, they should be just fine.
Phil Jackson - 2023 Wide Receiver - Putnam City North
It seemed like we were scrambling to find out who #11 for PC North was all day on Wednesday. They had him playing WR and Corner all day and he was making some nice plays but I could not find him on any roster. After talking briefly with head coach Ryan Laverty, we learned that Phil Jackson is a first-year player on the team and has played exclusively on the basketball team prior to this off-season. The sample size was small, but without knowing his background we would not have guessed he was new to the team or sport. Jackson was one of the bigger WRs at the camp and he convincingly won a few 1on1 reps against some of the top DBs in attendance. The athleticism is clearly there for Jackson, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets a better feel for the game and becomes one of the top receiving threats in this PC North offense.
[player_tooltip player_id="101405" first="Tabry" last="Shettron"] - 2022 Tight End - Edmond Santa Fe
To round out this list we have the Shettron brothers who both had productive performances on Wednesday. Tabry was used primarily as an in-line, hand in the ground tight end, but he also lined up in the slot and out wide on a semi-consistent basis. He did not have quite as many explosive plays on the day as his brother Talyn, but Tabry was a constant threat over the middle of the field and was arguably Santa Fe’s number one target on short to intermediate routes.
[player_tooltip player_id="38667" first="Talyn" last="Shettron"] - 2022 Wide Receiver - Edmond Santa Fe
Sometimes the upper echelon prospects at camps like these don’t stand out as much as we’d think they would because it can be hard to get in a rhythm when you’re hopping off the field every 2 or 3 plays. That was not the case at all with [player_tooltip player_id="38667" first="Talyn" last="Shettron"]. Once the 7on7 session was over and the lineman came back out for the live scrimmage portion, it was must-see football anytime Talyn lined up out wide. He was not perfect on the day, nobody was, but there were not many plays that he did not have at least 3 or 4 steps of separation on the man covering him. Without [player_tooltip player_id="38657" first="Ethane" last="Hyche"] and [player_tooltip player_id="61222" first="Micah" last="Snoddy"], the Shettron brothers will likely be asked to carry a bit more of the offensive workload in 2021 for Santa Fe, which is an exciting idea if you enjoy watching these two as much as we do.
