The Duncan Demons took a step in the right direction in year two under head coach Matt Terry. After the Demons went 1-9 in his first season as head coach, Terry and Duncan bounced back to go 4-6 and won as many games as the Demons had won in the previous two seasons combined. Now, the next step is to truly contend for a playoff spot and that was something that Duncan fell short of in 2024. They started the season with a 2-0 record but would drop their next three games. In the second half of the regular season, Duncan went 2-3 but they lost the games they couldn't afford to lose. Their four losses in district play were to the four teams that made it to the playoffs. Three of those losses were by 40+ points. In the regular season finale, they were within a couple touchdowns of Midwest City. Overall, the Demons came up short of the playoffs and as you start to look ahead to the 2025 football season, the difference will come in those critical games that will make up the difference between making or missing the playoffs. And as the Demons prepare for this season, they have to find a way to close the gap with those playoff teams.

2025 OUTLOOK

Duncan comes into this season, they are definitely a team that wouldn't surprise us if they end up crashing the party and making the playoffs this season. They come into this season with a ton of experience and quite a few of these players have been starting for multiple seasons. Offensively, the Demons bring back seven starters for a unit that averaged around 21 points per game. For us, it starts with the quarterback position. They have a multi-year starter returning and he's one of the more underrated dual-threat quarterbacks in Class 5A. With him back and the majority of the starters from last year, we think this unit takes a step forward. And the same can be said about the defensive side of the ball. They also bring back seven starters for a defense that gave up 37 points per game last season. But that doesn't really tell the full story of just how talented this defense was. In games against the top three teams in the district, they gave up 184 points and that had a significant impact on the season average. Now, they need to bring the average down and they can't give up 60 points or more three different times. But with the experience they have returning, we think they could improve. Duncan has to find a way to steal a win from Bishop McGuinness, Lawton MacArthur, Midwest City or Newcastle and they could punch their ticket back to the playoffs.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1758067' first='Boston' last='White'] is a two-way player that we're watching very closely this season. White returns this fall as one of the top producers on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver. Last season, he finished with nearly 30 catches for well over 300 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he also had nearly 60 tackles and more importantly, he quickly turned into a ball hawk, finishing with six interceptions on the season. The common theme in this preview has been about how Duncan could take a big jump forward this fall. If White is one of the players that makes a big jump, he could be one of the top two-way players in 5A football.

Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='437049' first='Sawyer' last='Rice'] returns once again to start for the Demons and we're looking forward to seeing how he's developed over the last nine months. Last season, Rice was incredibly productive as a true dual-threat option for Duncan. He threw for nearly 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns while also adding well over 600 yards and ten touchdowns on the ground. This season, it wouldn't be surprising to see Rice throw for at least 20 touchdowns and run for at least 20 touchdowns. He's a very underrated player not only in Class 5A but in the state. He has legitimate track speed and has gotten on the radar to play D1 football.

Leading the Duncan defense this season will be senior [player_tooltip player_id='1611983' first='Zion' last='Butler'] at the linebacker position. Full disclosure, we didn't know much about Butler prior to working on this preview. But then we got a chance to see his production, his film and some of the work he's done in the weight room and we're sold. He's a linebacker to watch this season. Last year, he finished the season with nearly 90 tackles on the season, including 23 tackles for loss. He measures in at 6'0 and over 220 pounds and he is a weight room monster. He's also tested off the charts from a speed perspective. He's a mack truck playing linebacker.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - AT Bridge Creek
- For the second straight year, Duncan kicks off the season against Bridge Creek in week zero. Last season was the first meeting between these two programs in recent memory. Last season, Duncan got the 2024 campaign off to a solid start with a 13-12 victory. They're hoping for a similar start this fall.
Sept. 5th - Cache
- Just like the Bridge Creek match-up, Duncan met Cache last season for the first time in recent memory. And just like that week zero match-up, Duncan won a competitive game, winning 20-14 last season. This year, the Cache game will serve as Duncan's home opener to the 2025 football season.
Sept. 12th - AT Guthrie
- Duncan heads to Guthrie in week two and this is the sixth straight year that these two teams have met in non-district play. The Blue Jays have owned this non-district series. They won 55-12 last season before making a run all the way to the Class 5A state championship game.
Sept. 19th - Shawnee
- Duncan wraps up their non-district slate with their second straight match-up against a preseason top ten team in Class 5A. They host Shawnee after falling to the Wolves 21-7 last season. Prior to last year's meeting, these two teams haven't played each other since 2017.
Sept. 26th - Newcastle
- Duncan will open up their district slate at home against Newcastle. The Racers were a new team to Class 5A last season and they made a run to the semifinals. In their first ever meeting a year ago, the Racers rolled to a 60-7 victory over Duncan. The Demons will look to start district play with a bang here.
Oct. 3rd - AT Southeast
- It's week five but it's actually the start of the second half of Duncan's regular season slate. They head to Oklahoma City to face Southeast. Last season, they won a high-scoring and competitive game, winning 49-42. It was their tenth straight win in the series against the Spartans.
Oct. 10th - Lawton MacArthur
- Duncan returns home to host Lawton MacArthur in week six. This also kicks off a four-game stretch where Duncan needs to steal some wins to make the playoffs. The Highlanders have rolled in this series recently. They won 64-23 last season and it was their fourth straight win.
Oct. 17th - AT Bishop McGuinness
- Duncan returns to Oklahoma City to square off with Bishop McGuinness in week seven. The Irish were a new district opponent for the Demons in 2024. The recent match-ups between these two teams had taken place exclusively in the playoffs. McGuinness won 60-7 last season
Oct. 31st - Classen SAS
- On a Halloween Friday night, Duncan hosts Classen SAS in district play. Not only was Classen SAS a new district opponent for Duncan last season, they were a new opponent in general as they haven't played at all in recent memory. The Demons rolled to a 50-7 victory over the Comets.
Nov. 7th - AT Midwest City
- In the regular season finale, Duncan heads up to Midwest City in week ten and it wouldn't surprise us if this became a head to head clash for a playoff spot. Last season, they lost 40-26 and it was their third straight loss to the Bombers. Midwest City will have a first year head coach this fall.

Duncan is looking to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. In that Covid-impacted season, every team in the state that wanted to play in the playoffs could participate. Duncan won their first round game before losing in the second round. That playoff win was Duncan's first playoff win since 2011. The Demons took positive steps last season and now they're looking for more. As we mentioned earlier, this was a program that won four games in 2022 and 2023 combined. They won four games last season alone and we think that's the floor for them this season. The Demons have been flying under the radar but there's a chance that they break through this season. Head coach Matt Terry is going into his third season as Duncan's head coach and he has a solid shot to have his first winning season with the Demons since he took over in 2023.
