Coweta came into the 2024 football season knowing that there were going to be some growing pains. They had to replace the majority of their starters from the 2023 team and they were leaning on a roster that was incredibly young throughout the 2024 season. This team was thrown into the fire early but the record doesn't tell the full story. The Tigers began the season by dropping their first six games. But the Tigers lost by six points or less in half of those games. In non-district play alone, two of their three losses were by a combined three points. A bounce here and a bounce there and the 0-6 start could flip to 3-3. The Tigers got into the winner's column halfway through the district slate. They beat Edison and Durant before falling to Booker T Washington. They also lost to East Central by a field goal in the regular season finale. The Tigers finished the season with a 2-8 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. But they were 1-4 in games decided by six points or less in 2024. This young team dealt with baptism by fire in 2024 and they're hoping to turn the page and all of those lumps they took last season will help mold them into a playoff team once again in 2025.

2025 OUTLOOK

This time last year, Coweta was bringing back eight starters total from the 2023 team. This season, they're bringing back eight starters on both sides of the ball. All signs point to the Tigers being the bounce back team of the 2025 football season. But they still have to go out and prove it on the field. Eight starters are back for an offense that struggled to score last season. But we really like the talent they have coming back on the offensive line and we think the Tigers have one of the more underrated playmakers at running back in Class 5A. That combination should help the Tigers light up the scoreboard and improve tremendously. Defensively, the Tigers also bring back eight starters and last year the defense actually played pretty well. They gave up a little more than 20 points per game but most teams that go 2-8 have a much higher average than that on defense. Just like the offense, we think the defense could definitely improve and they are already in a good spot to start the season. Now, the biggest hurdle for the Tigers is going to be the district slate. Three district opponents are in the preseason top ten and there are two others (besides Coweta) that we wouldn't be surprised to see in the top ten at some point this fall. The battle for the four playoff spots will be intense but we think the Tigers have the personnel to make it back to the playoffs after a rare season where they came up short.

Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='474870' first='Brock' last='Heilmann'] is the player we hinted at earlier that is one of the more underrated playmakers in Class 5A this season. Last fall, Heilmann was incredibly productive. He finished with more than 1,500 yards of total offense as a sophomore. Heilmann got plenty of playing time as a freshman but he really had his breakout season last fall. Now, in our opinion, he goes into this season as one of the top running backs to watch in Class 5A. He has legitimate speed and is a physical runner and plays the game with a high IQ. He could put up monster numbers this fall.

There are a handful of freshmen that we're fired up to see this season and [player_tooltip player_id='1751862' first='Brodie' last='Chalakee'] is definitely one of them. We got our first chance to see the Coweta big man tear things up at one of our 7v7 tournaments this spring. He's had a really strong offseason and we're looking forward to seeing how that momentum continues this season. He's listed at 6'5 and the size will provide Coweta with some match-up problems for their opponents. It sounds like the plan is for him to play on both sides of the ball but we really like what we've seen from him at the tight end position.

Another junior that is about to head into his third season as a starter is offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='734696' first='Hunter' last='Reavis'] and we've covered him since before his high school career started. Every year, Reavis has impressed us and he's going into his junior season looking to establish himself as one of the top interior offensive linemen not only in Class 5A but in the state. We definitely think he's one of the top interior OL in the state's 2027 class. He's strong, physical and he brings a ton of experience along with him. We mentioned how much we liked Coweta's offensive line group and he's a big reason behind it.

Another offensive playmaker to keep an eye on this season will be senior [player_tooltip player_id='1751858' first='Kooper' last='McNac'] at the wide receiver position. Last season, McNac emerged as arguably the top threat in the Coweta passing game. McNac finished his junior season with over 40 catches and seven touchdowns. He comes into his senior season looking to help lead the Tigers back to the playoffs this season. We think he has a chance to be Coweta's leading threat in the passing game again this fall. He has good speed and good size and will be a match-up problem for some cornerbacks this fall.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Wagoner
- The Highway 51 rivalry once again kicks off the season for Coweta as they'll take on Wagoner at home in week one. The Bulldogs are going to look different with a first year head coach. Coweta is looking to turn things around in this series. Last season, they lost 24-0 and it was their second straight loss.
Sept. 12th - AT Fort Smith Northside, AR.
- The first of back to back match-ups against Arkansas competition comes here in week two. Coweta heads east to face Fort Smith Northside. Last season was the first meeting between these two teams and Northside would beat the Tigers 28-27. The first of five games in 2024 decided by six points or less.
Sept. 19th - Prairie Grove, AR.
- Coweta returns home to face another Arkansas opponent in Prairie Grove in week three. Just like with Fort Smith Northside, last season was the first time these two teams met. Prairie Grove got the best of Coweta 34-32. This game is the final non-district match-up before district play kicks off in 2025.
Sept. 26th - AT McAlester
- The district slate kicks off with a road trip to McAlester. This will be the tenth straight year that Coweta meets McAlester in district play and it's been incredibly competitive. In the last nine meetings, McAlester holds a 5-4 advantage, including beating the Tigers 35-0 last season.
Oct. 3rd - Bishop Kelley
- Coweta hosts Bishop Kelley in week five and the Tigers are looking for their third win in the last four meetings. These two were district opponents from 2018-2021 but didn't meet in 2022 and 2023. The Comets beat the Tigers 20-8 last season. This is one of those games that feels like a must-win to make the playoffs.
Oct. 10th - AT Shawnee
- The second half of the regular season kicks off with a road game against Shawnee in week six. These two teams have been district foes off and on for the last decade. Last season, Coweta came up short, losing 20-14 to the Wolves and that snapped a four-game winning streak in this series.
Oct. 17th - AT Edison
- On a Fall Break Friday night, Coweta takes the short trip to Tulsa to square off with Edison. Last season, the Tigers rolled to a 34-7 victory. That would end up being their largest margin of victory in 2024. Coweta has won three straight match-ups with the Eagles and has owned this series historically.
Oct. 24th - Durant
- Coweta and Durant have been district opponents every year since 2018 and the Tigers have absolutely dominated this series. They won a close one last season, prevailing 17-13. But the majority of their wins in the last two decades have been by 20+ points. They are 11-0 against Durant in the last two decades.
Oct. 31st - Booker T Washington
- On a Halloween Friday night in week nine, Coweta hosts defending district champion Booker T Washington. It's hard to believe but last year's meeting was the first between these two programs since 2005. With a win here, Coweta could be in a really strong position for the district crown.
Nov. 7th - AT East Central
- In the regular season finale, Coweta makes another trip to Tulsa to square off with East Central. The Cardinals are another opponent that has been a consistent district opponent of the Tigers. However, Coweta lost 28-25 and that snapped a nine-game winning streak over the Cardinals.

NOTABLE

Coweta is certainly looking forward to putting the memory of the 2024 football season behind them this fall. In addition to going 2-8 on the year, they missed out on the playoffs and snapped the longest playoff streak in school history. 2013 was the last time the Tigers missed out on the postseason. From 2014-2023, they played in the playoffs and in the majority of those appearances, they won their first round game. But as we mentioned earlier in the preview, last year's team was incredibly young and when you look up and down the roster heading into this season, the 2025 Coweta Tigers will be relatively young as well. But this is a team that has the overall talent that's good enough to start a new playoff streak. But again, like we said earlier in the preview, the district is going to be incredibly competitive. We could make legitimate arguments for six teams from this district to make the playoffs and it wouldn't be wild. There are only four spots. So the Tigers will need to take advantage of every opportunity put in front of them.
