Throughout the month of July and even into August, we are publishing well over 100 of the most in-depth team previews that you'll find anywhere to get you completely ready for the 2024 football season. This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the reigning Class 6A-1 state champion Bixby Spartans.

Bixby Spartans

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #1 In Class 6A-1
Preseason Coaches Ranking: #1 In Class 6A-1

Head Coach: Loren Montgomery - 15th Season - 130-39 Record At Bixby

2023 RESULTS (13-0 Record - Class 6A-1 State Champions)

Aug. 24 - Beat Owasso 42-16
Sept. 1 - Beat Springdale Har-Ber, AR. 75-18
Sept. 8 - Beat Sand Springs 61-7
Sept. 22 - Beat Norman North 60-2
Sept. 28 - Beat Southmoore 66-0
Oct. 6 - Beat Enid 79-7
Oct. 13 - Beat Broken Arrow 51-7
Oct. 20 - Beat Westmoore 78-28
Oct. 27 - Beat Moore 68-5
Nov. 3 - Beat Jenks 31-14
Quarterfinals - Beat Norman 59-20
Semifinals - Beat Owasso 56-14
Championship - Beat Jenks 49-21

2023 Offensive Scoring Average: 59.6 Points Per Game
2023 Defensive Scoring Average: 12.2 Points Per Game

For a decade, the Bixby Spartans have been at the mountaintop of Oklahoma high school football. Their dynasty began in 2014 and it continued in 2023. The Spartans made state history by becoming the first team to play in ten consecutive state championship games. And it would end with another gold ball. The road to Edmond had it's bumps but the Spartans were once again rarely challenged, week after week, in pursuit of perfection. They were absolutely dominant in the regular season. The closest contest came in week ten against Jenks, and they ran away with a 31-14 victory. That 17-point win was their only victory by less than 20 points on the year. They would dominate in the playoffs and met the Trojans once again in the state championship game. And for the second straight year, Bixby ended Jenks' season with a loss. They beat Jenks 49-21 to raise their ninth state championship in school history and their sixth consecutive gold ball. The Spartans had a special senior class and for Bixby to make even more history in 2024, they'll need some new faces to step into the spotlight this fall.

2024 OUTLOOK

Only a handful of starters return from last year's state title team. Four starters on offense return but they do have an advantage with their quarterback returning. But he'll need those new faces to step up in front of him on the offensive line and at some of the skill positions, including in the backfield at running back. On defense, the Spartans are going to be even more inexperienced with only one starter back on that side of the ball. But let's face it and just say what everyone is thinking. Bixby has 100 percent become a program that reloads. They're not a program that rebuilds. So while the Spartans were hit hard by graduation, that just means that a new crop of standouts are ready to come up and make an impact on Friday nights. We do like some of the young pieces that are ready to take that next step, specifically in the 2026 class. The Spartans come into this season as the top-ranked team and the team to beat in the class. But they will need those new starters to come along quickly. Arguably the game of the year in 6A-1 will take place in week four when Bixby hosts Jenks to open up district play. There are plenty of people that think Jenks has the top team in 6A-1 but the Spartans aren't going to just hand over the crown.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Brody Duffel - Offensive Lineman
Hank Puckett - Linebacker
Jett Turner - Running Back/Linebacker
Justin Kirk - Defensive Lineman
Kordell Gouldsby - Athlete

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Bixby senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1096189' first='Blake' last='Hogshooter'] is going to be one of the best wide receivers in 6A-1 football this season. He took that first step last fall, becoming one of Bixby's big threats in the passing game. Hogshooter was second on the team with eight receiving touchdowns and he has developed an outstanding connection with his quarterback over the last two offseasons. We were told before last season that Hogshooter could be a breakout player to watch within the Bixby offense and that certainly played out that way. Now, as we head into the 2024 season, Hogshooter has the potential to be arguably the most productive player in Bixby's offense with his ability to make plays down the field.

At this time last year, Bixby senior [player_tooltip player_id='328129' first='Broderick' last='Shull'] was the new kid on the block. The 2025 offensive lineman moved to Oklahoma from Missouri and he was one of the great unknowns heading into the season. Shull had multiple D1 offers (now committed to Auburn) and was considered one of the better guys at his position in the region. He joined a Bixby offensive line and fit right in with a unit that was one of the best in the state last fall. Now, Shull is the guy and the Spartans will lean on him to be just that. The Bixby offensive line lost several starters, including All State caliber players that you don't just replace with the next guy up. We expect Shull to become the vocal leader of this group and already saw signs of that this spring.

Bixby junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='284114' first='Carson' last='Kirby'] is definitely ready to take that next step within this Bixby offense. Last season, Kirby was one of three quarterbacks that saw playing time but it didn't take long for Kirby to emerge as the main guy at the position, specifically to throw the ball down the field. And Kirby can do just that as one of the top quarterbacks in the state's 2026 class. He's had a very solid offseason and is continuing to build chemistry with guys like Hogshooter and even some of the new receivers in this Bixby offense. Last fall, Kirby completed 71 percent of his passes and finished with just over 2,200 yards and 35 touchdowns. We don't see any reason why he won't be able to replicate or improve those numbers.

In addition to Kirby, the Spartans also will see the return of senior [player_tooltip player_id='255022' first='Cooper' last='Parker'] at times in the backfield. Parker was an outstanding running threat, specifically near the goal line and in short yardage situations. Parker was third on the team in rushing and was second in rushing touchdowns with nine on the year. Don't be surprised to see Parker replicate that kind of production for the Spartan offense this fall. But there's no doubt that he is going to be more valuable to the defensive side of the ball. The Bixby senior is the lone full time starter that returns on defense. He was third on the team in tackles a year ago and is going to be a big part of the defense this season, helping new guys come along.

Bixby junior [player_tooltip player_id='414994' first='Cord' last='Nolan'] first emerged as a freshman in the very first game of the 2022 season. Since then, he has become one of Bixby's top players and you can say that about him on either side of the ball. As a freshman, Nolan was productive on defense as a linebacker. Last season, we watched as Nolan became the team's leading receiver at the tight end position. There's no doubt that Nolan was the safety valve of the Bixby offense and really excelled at the tight end position. We mentioned that Hogshooter could be the top target in the passing game but Nolan will be right there as well. Nolan has definitely cemented himself as one of the top prospects in the state's 2026 class.

Bixby sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='528027' first='Kaeden' last='Penny'] is already a name that you need to know about in the state's 2027 class. As one of the top prospects already, Penny is more than ready to have an extreme impact on Friday nights. And if this spring was any indication, don't be surprised if that impact is on both sides of the ball. While Penny first got our attention for what he can be on the defensive side of the ball, Penny was also taking plenty of reps this spring at the left tackle position. If he can help out the Spartans on offense as well, he can really dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. But with Bixby losing almost their entire front seven, his impact on defense will be important.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='595747' first='Ben' last='Rogalski'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
BJ Jones - 2028 Running Back/Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1184851' first='Bode' last='Bright'] - 2026 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='415161' first='Braeden' last='Presley'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='656680' first='Cetcher' last='DeHart'] - 2026 Wide Receiver
[player_tooltip player_id='1304597' first='Cooper' last='Upton'] - 2026 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='338550' first='Emory' last='Snyder'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='402387' first='Trey' last='McGlothlin'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Linebacker
[player_tooltip player_id='1096191' first='Tyler' last='Wright'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Aug. 30th - AT Owasso
- The “Battle Of The Burbs” will kick off the season for the third straight year but in a new location. After playing the Rams at TU's Chapman Stadium in each of the last two years, the series now shifts to a home and home for the foreseeable future. Bixby travels north to face the Rams to kick off a new season. They've met in the regular season and then again in the playoffs in each of the last two years. The closest outcome was last year's 42-16 win in the season opener.
Sept. 6th - Sand Springs
Sept. 20th - AT Choctaw
- Before Bixby was dominating Class 6A-1, they were dominating Class 6A-2. One of their rivals before moving up to their current class was Choctaw. They met in the 2020 state championship game and played a close contest but the Spartans have been dominant in just about every other meeting. The Yellowjackets expect to contend for the state championship in 6A-2. So while this match-up on paper does look like it favors the Spartans, don't overlook the Yellowjackets here.
Sept. 27th - Jenks
- In each of the last two years, we've had to wait until week ten for Bixby and Jenks to square off. This year, we don't even have to wait a full month. In week four, the Spartans will host the Trojans in a rematch of last year's state championship game. In their last 75 games, the Spartans are 74-1. The one loss was in the regular season finale in 2022 to the Trojans. This week four match-up will be one of the more highly anticipated games of the 2024 season in 6A-1.
Oct. 4th - AT Moore
Oct. 11th - Edmond North
Oct. 17th - AT Enid
Oct. 25th - Mustang
Nov. 1st - AT Deer Creek
Nov. 8th - Norman

NOTABLE

The Bixby Spartans just find new ways to make history. From their state record 11-man winning streak, to last year, becoming the first team in state history to play in ten consecutive state championship games. As we look ahead to the 2024 season, the Spartans have a chance to make even more history. The Spartans enter this fall having won six consecutive state championships. If the Spartans add another gold ball to the growing trophy case, they'll become the first 11-man team in state history to win seven straight state championships. Jenks won six straight from 1996-2001 and Morrison won six straight from 1988-1994. Bixby is in that club right now and they are looking for a seventh title to put them in a category all by themselves. And with another title, it'll be their tenth in program history, putting them in a tie for sixth most championships in state history with Muskogee and Thomas. Right now, only nine programs in state history have ten state championships and number ten for Bixby could make them the tenth.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2023 - 13-0 - Class 6A-1 State Champions
2022 - 12-1 - Class 6A-1 State Champions
2021 - 13-0 - Class 6A-2 State Champions
2020 - 11-0 - Class 6A-2 State Champions
2019 - 13-0 - Class 6A-2 State Champions

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

9 State Championships

2023 - Beat Jenks 49-21
2022 - Beat Owasso 69-6
2021 - Beat Deer Creek 63-14
2020 - Beat Choctaw 17-14
2019 - Beat Stillwater 40-36
2018 - Beat Stillwater 34-13
2016 - Beat Lawton 39-31
2015 - Beat Sand Springs 38-28
2014 - Beat Lawton 35-21
