Continue ReadingI’m very excited to introduce a new PrepRedzone Midwest series called “Freshmen Week.” As they say: “freshmen never older”, and in terms of high school football recruiting that means that the enticement of the new class’ potential, projection, and talent never ceases to stay captivating. Additionally, with the way college football recruiting is trending, identifying, evaluating, and predicting underclassmen to the next level is becoming more and more important, and we are seeing a significant increase in offers going out to freshmen in recent recruiting cycles. With all of that in mind, let’s check out the first state we’re zeroing in on for this Freshmen Week special: Wisconsin. Let’s dig in and get to know 11 of the upcoming stars of the Badger State’s high school football scene below, plus 11 honorable mentions making noise on Wisconsin gridirons. The future is bright!

A standout multi-sport athlete in his first year at Waukesha South, quarterback Jordan Garcia Jordan Garcia 6’1″ | 155 lbs | QB Waukesha South | 2027 State WI already possesses solid size at 6’1, 155 lbs. and is amid a good freshman campaign slinging the pigskin for the Cardinal. Currently a non-varsity starter, Garcia has been showing off a solid deep ball that can stretch the field and drop the ball into the bread basket of receivers going vertical. I also like his mobility, as Garcia does a good job of evading pressure while keeping his eyes downfield and allowing his receivers to improvise and get open. There’s also some good reps showing ball placement to the second level of the field, and his touch is also noteworthy. If he keeps developing it spells out good things for his future as a varsity gunslinger.
A 6′, 190 lb. defensive lineman and tight end representing the talent-rich Oak Creek program outside of Milwaukee,
Lincoln Hanson
Lincoln
Hanson
6’2″ | 195 lbs | DL
Oak Creek | 2027
State
WI
is coming off a distinguished youth football career and has transitioned well to the non-varsity ranks of the Knights. Primarily playing DE, Hanson is a big hitter and comfortable and productive as a pass rusher, thanks to his active hands that he uses effectively to disengage from blockers, and he also is strong enough to hold a gap from larger OTs trying to move him off the ball. I like his motor that doesn’t quit between the whistles, and he’s got a good frame that is going to continue to add good weight and maintain his mobility. Oak Creek always has talented young bucks waiting in the ranks and Hanson is no exception.

Representing the powerhouse Arrowhead program, 6′, 180 lber. Evan Wozniak Evan Wozniak 6’0″ | 190 lbs | K Arrowhead | 2027 State WI doubles as a standout track & field performer who can play multiple positions on the gridiron. A WR/TE hybrid, Wozniak has been receiving varsity reps as a kicker, primarily handling kickoffs. He also booted a 47-yard FG in a JV game. He’s been averaging over 3.7 seconds of hang time on said KOs, and can easily boot the ball to the goal line and out of the end zone. As a WR, Wozniak is strong and capable athlete for his age, and showed he can break his routes off well, slip through tackle attempts after the catch, and is a physical and willing blocker who can do damage around the LOS or on the perimeter. The 180 lber. has successfully booted at least a half dozen FGs in the JV ranks and has also kicked some punts with impressive accuracy and leg strength for his age. Can’t wait to see how he continues to progress in multiple phases of the world’s greatest game.
Another prolific freshman from Racine Lutheran High School, 5’11, 150 lb. wideout Bryce Austin Bryce Austin 6’1″ | 165 lbs | ATH Racine Lutheran | 2027 State WI is having an impressive freshman campaign and is the Crusader’s leading receiver while playing a big role in Lutheran’s 7-1 record. He’s recorded 18 receptions for 473 yards (26 YPC) and 6 TDs, and done so in exciting fashion, as he demonstrates the speed to take the top off the defense and a shifty and slippery running style after the catch that can break tackles and turn routine catches into explosive gains. To emphasize his dynamic ability, Austin also plays CB and has tallied 9 tackles, 3 INTs, 1 FF, and half a sack thanks to how he fires out of his breaks and has no problems enforcing the run. Austin also is a sudden returner who has taken a punt to the house in 2023 and also has handled kickoffs for the Crusaders this fall. He’ll tackle returners after kicking off as well! He has my pick for one of the best freshmen in the Badger State’s budding 2027 class. Keep up the great work, Bryce! Big things coming.
Despite not playing varsity in 2023, Waukesha South has a stud coming up through their LB ranks in 5’11, 210 lb. OLB
Jamal Booker
Jamal
Booker
6’0″ | 215 lbs | LB
Waukesha South | 2027
State
WI
. Reporting a 225 lb. bench, 365 squat, and 205 lb. clean, Booker has been an absolute force in the non-varsity ranks for the Cardinals and is a big and productive thumper who has laid some massive hits on defense and special teams this fall. A force off the edge as a standup outside ‘backer, Booker flies out of his stance, attacks blockers in the backfield, and can run down plays from the backside of the LOS thanks to his impressive closing and pursuit speed. The 210 lber. does a good job of holding and defending the edge and using leverage to keep ball carriers from getting outside of him, and he’s also athletic enough to be comfortable tackling in space, as well as beat blocking attempts using quickness. Booker can do a ton of good things well on the gridiron and should be seeing varsity action sooner rather than later. PRzWI is quite excited about his future as a college football prospect.
Whitewater High School’s freshman QB/ATH
Ty Bucholtz
Ty
Bucholtz
5’11” | 155 lbs | QB
Whitewater | 2027
State
WI
is putting some good things on tape and setting himself up well for his future as a football player. Playing non-varsity football in 2023 at a slight 5’8, 140 lbs., Bucholtz has been dynamic, and as a testament to his athleticism has been manning the QB1 spot for Whitewater in their non-varsity ranks. Mobile, tough, and at his best when on the move and improvising, Bucholtz is also a standout WR who can create explosive plays downfield or after the catch and shows good control when high-pointing the football out of the air. Still a lot of work and development to be done, especially in the weight room, but the Whitewater product is already a playmaker and an athlete who can do a lot of good things on the gridiron.

Another Wisconsin freshman coming off a decorated youth football career, Hartford’s
Jaxon Rolsma
Jaxon
Rolsma
6’1″ | 240 lbs | OL
Hartford Union | 2027
State
WI
brings good size to the table as a 6’1, 215 lb. lineman and possesses one of my favorite qualities in prep football prospects: a wrestling background. A WWF state wrestling qualifier, Rolsma has used the skills on the wrestling mat to play varsity football on the Orioles offensive line in 2023, and he fits in nicely as a varsity lineman if I do say so myself. The wrestling background shows up nicely in his good understanding of leverage, as he knows how to use opponents attacks and force against them, particularly if they get out of position, on their heels or too far extended, or are lazy with their hands. Overall controlled, strong, and agile, especially for his age, Rolsma possesses noticeable strength for a freshman who can finish defenders, move them far out of the gap and backward, and maneuver them completely out of a play. He plays with good & consistent pad level, is laterally agile and balanced enough to effectively pull and/or work across the LOS, and is fun to watch when he gets out in space and looks for work. I also like his solid pass set, as he blocks with a good base and active feet in pass pro, and is successful and powerful in both run and pass situations. He’ll be at or near the top of the upcoming PRzWI 2027 rankings, especially given the tradition Wisconsin has at producing top-tier collegiate OL prospects.

Racine Lutheran is a must-stop when talking stud Wisconsin freshmen, and a lot of their 7-1 success so far in 2023 has to do with their electric freshman gunslinger in 5’10 Cohen Kraus Cohen Kraus 5’10” | 160 lbs | QB Racine Lutheran | 2027 State WI . No tape from the young buck yet, but Kraus has posted 55 completions on 92 attempts (60%) for 1,025 yards and 13 TDs to only 2 INTs, a very promising stat line given the ball security, decision making, accuracy, and above all: winning. Winning games and accuracy are two of my favorite and must-have qualities when talking high school quarterbacks, and Kraus seems to have those in spades as a 14-year-old. Can’t wait to get my eyes on some film from this kid, he seems built for the big leagues of high school football.
![Ely Kohlman](https://prepredzone.com/wp-content/themes/prep-network-content/public/images/generic-male.png)
Ely Kohlman
Ely Kohlman
The 6’1, 160 lber. from New Holstein is off to a hot start in his opening season of high school football and has been productive on both sides of the ball with 15 catches for 306 yards and 4 TDs and 22 tackles, a TFL, a forced fumble, and 2 INTs. Ely Kohlman sports a ling, lean frame that is going to be able to hold a lot more good weight, and on the gridiron he displays a skillset of speed and agility, and I like his quickness and balance after the catch and ability to win contested catches through tight coverage. He’s a deep threat who can torch 1-on-1 defense and take the top off the defense and uses that speed to effectively patrol the MOF well and capitalizes on overthrown balls and mistakes from opposing QBs. Bright future ahead of Kohlman, that’s forsure.
