The 2026 football season kicks off this week and we're kicking off our coverage with complete and in-depth breakdowns on the state's senior class. This is a class that will go down in the history books as one of the best in state history. We've updated our <a href="https://prepredzone.com/oklahoma/rankings/2027-rankings/">2027 rankings to include the Top 200 prospects in the state</a>. We have a ton of individual breakdowns dropping every day to spotlight some of those special prospects. In this breakdown, we're taking a look at the defensive back group. All six guys on this breakdown have one thing in common and it's experience. All of these guys have been impactful players for a while now. Check out Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more 2027 individual breakdowns!    Lai has been a consistent presence over the last three years. Every state has this and Oklahoma certainly has a ton of examples of prospects that for whatever reason, continue to fly under the radar. Simply put Lai is one of the best cornerbacks in the state. He's proven that against elite competition and has always answered the call. Lai is also a terrific athlete and will be used in a variety of ways by the Commandos this season. But when it comes down to what he is at the next level. He's a cornerback that can lock up the opponent's top wide receiver and that is a fact.     Evans made the move this summer from Southeast to Millwood and it's expected that he is an instant impact player for the Falcons. He's a two-way star at the cornerback and wide receiver position but it looks like he's being recruited to the next level primarily at defensive back. Evans proven in the spring and there is a lot to like about his game. He checks all the boxes physically. He's incredibly athletic and that allows him to be an absolute playmaker, every time he steps on the field. It's not a crazy prediction but we think that Evans is going to quickly become one of the top playmakers in 2A-2 this season.     Following his freshman season, someone pointed Ardmore cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='946188' first='Tyson' last='Laster'] out to us and told us that he was going to be the next dude. That person was right as Laster has been outstanding for the Tigers over the last three seasons. And now, Ardmore is expecting to contend for a state championship this season with Laster and the majority of their starters back. Laster is a prototypical shutdown cornerback and has just gotten better and better. He's also a playmaker on the offensive side of the ball. The athleticism and natural ability that Laster plays with makes him a very fun player to watch on the football field.     Stillwater safety Petyon Campbell is on our shortlist of players we're fired up to watch in person this season. Campbell had a terrific junior season and carried that momentum into the offseason, where he was lights out every time we saw him in person. Now, Campbell is preparing for his senior season. He's one of the top available safeties in the state's 2027 class. Campbell is a terrific athlete and it wouldn't be surprising to see him play some offense this season. He has that athletic ability that you need from a safety. He has a nose for the football and he's gotten better and better every time we have seen him in person.      North Rock Creek's [player_tooltip player_id='1184832' first='Tyson' last='Hawkins'] can almost fit in that same category as Lai at Cascia Hall. Hawkins has been starting for a long time and has played a lot of meaningful football over the last several seasons. And because he's arguably North Rock Creek's best overall player, don't be surprised if they use him in every aspect of the game this season. Hawkins got on our radar early in his high school career when he emerged as an absolute ball hawk on the defensive side of the ball. Now, you can make the argument that he'll be one of the better two-way players in Class 3A this season. But when it comes down to him as a prospect, it's hard to ignore his natural ability on defense. Which also shows up on the basketball court.     Campbell has been on the radar since his freshman season in high school. He's also been one of a handful of 2027 prospects that has just not had the good fortune in the health department. He's had nagging injuries at various times that have limited him picking up momentum from season to season. But this offseason, Campbell was one of the better football players on the field at various events. Indicating he could be set for a huge senior year. The ceiling for him moving forward is still incredibly high. And there aren't many players that will be hungrier to kick things off this week than Campbell.
