Junior season. Time for the Class of 2028 to establish themselves and put themselves on the map if they haven't yet to this point. It isn't a bad thing to be looking for that breakout year as a junior. The best teams always have their majority of contributors at the upperclassmen levels, so it isn't common for underclassmen to carve out a large roll. But now that the Class of 2028 is entering that junior season it is time for guys to make their mark. Going through the rankings I have found several athletes who are ready to make that big impact. Some are coming off small bits of varsity action, but things are lining up for them to have that down to down playing time. Let's talk about them.

One of those athletes who was able to get a taste of Friday nights in 2025 was [player_tooltip player_id='1244378' first='Sonny' last='Young']. His 18/196/3 are 2nd best on the team in terms of returning production out wide. Sonny brings mismatch size with his big frame and wingspan. His size creates his advantage and how he is able to box out defenders and high point the football off the top shelf. The '28 WR/TE even demonstrated the ability to contort his body to secure catches. The '28 also returns his team's QB1, so we should see a perfect storm for him to breakout on varsity this season.

I'm fired up for Diego's junior season. The situation looks perfect for him as he is the #1 in returning production at the WR position for MG with his 11/290/1. A stat line that demonstrates how explosive of a playmaker he can be with that 26.4 yds/rec average. The tape shows a kid who has the athletic tools necessary for the next level, but I'm even more of a fan of the way he runs routes. He sets up DBs well and makes cuts at the right time to quickly create separation. The kid has the burst to get in and out of route breaks quickly too. Plus he has hands that his returning QB1 will be able to trust. MG is replacing plenty of talent, but they have a good stable of talent returning and stepping up. The expectations should be high for the Silver Eagles.

One thing a lot of these potential breakout athletes have in common is that they went off in the limited opportunities they were given in 2025. Carter continues that streak with his 8 carries that went for an insane 174 yards and 3 TDs. Carter is 2nd on the team in returning rushing production at the RB position. He is a patient runner who does really well reading the blocks of his OL, and then bursting through into the secondary. Carter runs with a well balanced blend of speed and physicality, allowing him to find success inside and outside. I'm excited to see him take on a larger role and wear down defenses.

This ranking might be more of a placeholder for now. This season we are going to learn a lot more about the QB out of Mt. Horeb/Barneveld as he works to take over the starting job. While he isn't the biggest prospect, Harvey has done a really good job of filling out his 5'10" frame to 180 lbs. He is still able to be quick on his feet so that he can set and throw instantly. That added size has helped him get more velocity into his passes and open up more of the field to him. This season we are going to see how well that arm talent translates to the varsity level. He will have several big time talents to target, so the stage is set for him to have a strong first year at the helm.

Brookfield East is another team that will be working in a new QB1 on varsity. That athlete look slike it will be 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='2112412' first='Lucas' last='Yttre']. The 6'1" 185 lbs QB carved up defenses at the JV level in 2025. Lucas has a solid arm that can pick apart the secondary with smart ball placement. He brings some rushing talents with him too. Lucas has spent a lot of time working on his craft in the offseason, so Don't be surprised to see him make a big leap from last year and a big leap up our boards when the 2026 season ends.

It looks like Rhinelander will be seeing a lot of turnover in their backfield this fall. 2028 RB [player_tooltip player_id='1671619' first='Matthew' last='Haselton'] is a member of that returning backfield who I believe can take on a large amount of the voided production. The wing back has the tools to stretch the defense. He can be patient and pull the defense laterally while reading his blocks and then burst through gaps and into the open for big gains. The 180 lbs RB will also run with contact balance, taking hits and breaking tackles. Things look to be lined up for the 2028 RB to have a key role on Friday nights for the Hodags.

Waupun has a lot of production to relate in 2026, but they have several dudes that are ready to pick up the slack. In the backfield it look like it will be [player_tooltip player_id='2112422' first='Corbin' last='Groenewold'] leading the way. His 5 carries for 44 yards and a TD are all #1 for returning production on the ground. The 5'11" 185 lbs RB isn't a burner on the ground, but he is an efficient runner. He is slippery through traffic and has a strong base of balance to be able to roll off tackles and keep gaining positive yardage. Waupun will have a new QB1 and RB1 in the backfield this fall, so I'm expecting them to be a little more balanced this fall to get them both integrated into the Friday night action.
