The Jones Longhorns came into the 2025 football season with high expectations and they certainly lived up to them. With a very talented senior class returning, the Longhorns came into the season #2 in our 2A-1 preseason rankings behind defending champion Washington. Jones certainly backed up the preseason hype with their play throughout the season. They ran through a competitive non-district schedule, with the closest game being a 24-point win over 4A's Bethany. They entered one of the more competitive districts in the state and took care of business there as well. That included a 12-point win over Oklahoma Christian School in week nine to lock up the district championship. They finished the regular season with a 10-0 record and all eyes were set on making a trip to Edmond to contend for the 2A-1 state championship. The offense hit another gear in the first three rounds of the playoffs. They averaged 50+ points in their wins over Little Axe, Tahlequah Sequoyah and Marlow to punch their ticket to the state championship game. And they were absolutely rolling into Edmond after beating Marlow by 27 points in the semifinals. They would lock up with Washington in the state championship game and that was a Washington squad that was looking for their fourth consecutive state title. They had made UCO a second home in December. The Longhorns opened things up in the second half, scoring 14 unanswered to take a lead they would never give up. To be the champ, sometimes you have to go through the champs. Jones did just that, beating Washington 20-14 to capture their second state championship in program history and the first since 2016.

2026 OUTLOOK

There's going to be a lot of “new” for the Longhorns as they try to defend their state championship in 2026. First off, they won't be chasing another 2A-1 state championship this fall. They have been bumped up to Class 3A for at least the next two seasons and will be chasing 3A gold in 2026. There's also going to be a new man in charge of Longhorn football. Kevin Witt stepped down after winning the state title to take the head coach position at Minco in late March. Less than two weeks later, the Longhorns announced Jeremy Reed as their next head coach. He won a 5A state championship at Altus about a decade ago and has a lot of experience at various levels of high school ball. He takes over a program that is hungry for more. Five starters return on the offensive side of the ball. But they also get a few additions, including last year's PRZ-Oklahoma Freshman Of The Year that should keep the offense rolling in 2026. Defensively, the Longhorns bring back nine starters from last year's team and there's a chance that they have one of the best secondaries in state, regardless of class. They do have to replace one of the state's best linebackers but this is a defense, on paper, that looks like they could pick up right where they left off last season. The schedule is a tough one as they'll face two top five teams in the non-district slate. Followed by a district schedule where they'll be spending quite a bit of time on the bus. More on that later on in the preview. Overall, the Longhorns are the new team on the block in Class 3A but in our opinion, they look like the team to beat.

The last time we saw 2028 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1703876' first='Derek' last='Templeton'] in game action, he was making the game-clinching interception in the end zone to lock up the 2A-1 state championship. That capped off what was a breakout season for the sophomore cornerback and going back and looking at that film, he was incredibly productive in the title game, in addition to the big play at the end. Templeton has seen his recruitment start to heat up this offseason, picking up a handful of D1 offers following that breakout sophomore season. He's one of several names returning on this defense that will make them fun to watch.

2027 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1831023' first='Drew' last='Thomas'] is another Longhorn defensive back that had an interception in that state championship win back in December. And that was the name of the game for Thomas during his junior season. He ended up leading the team in interceptions with five on the season. Thomas was a player that would separate the opponent from the ball and had a nose for it. He also recovered four fumbles last season and he returned a kick for a score. He was another player that we didn't know that much about prior to the 2025 season but that quickly changed. He will be one of the senior veterans this fall.

2028 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1831025' first='Eli' last='DeBusk'] is another name to watch on this defense this season as we could see him have a major breakout year. You could start to see flashes of it last season. He finished second on the team in tackles with 70. The only Longhorn who had more tackles was his older brother Luke, who was one of the state's best linebackers over the last few seasons. Now, all eyes will be on Eli to see if he can expand his role and take the next step on this Jones defense. Like we've already mentioned a few times, this defense has the chance to be special. It won't surprise us if DeBusk ends up being a 100+ tackle player in 2026.

2028 wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1603482' first='Garritt' last='Davis'] is the first of two new major additions to the Jones roster this offseason. Davis landed at Jones after spending the last two seasons at Crossings Christian. And he's one of the emerging stars in the state's 2028 class at the wide receiver position. Davis has a very unique skillset where he was successful in just about every position that Crossings put him in last season. His sophomore film is very fun to watch considering how many different things he did and did at a high level. Davis is also taking a lot of momentum into this season after having a terrific offseason on the 7v7 circuit.

It feels like 2027 wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1461909' first='Hunter' last='Purvis'] is on a one-way street to being one of the top wide receivers in the state and certainly in Class 3A this season. Last year, you saw flashes of Purvis being a game-changer at the wide receiver position. He finished with 52 catches and a little over 800 yards. But he also led the team with 15 touchdown receptions and the next player on the list had 7. Purvis was a big play guy for the Longhorns and we are fired up to see what he does for an encore. He tore it up at our February showcase camp and with the Longhorns bringing in one of the better quarterbacks in the state, he's primed for a monster senior season.

In addition to DeBusk returning, the Longhorns also bring back 2027 LB [player_tooltip player_id='1830322' first='Jesse' last='Hernandez'] to give this defense even more pop in 2026. Hernandez was third on the team in tackles with 67 last season and just like with DeBusk, we think that Hernandez could see his production get a spike this fall. That's going to be a fun two-headed monster at the linebacker position for this defense and it's going to be very difficult for opposing teams to get anything going on offense. Looking back at some of our notes from last year, Hernandez wasn't on our radar going into the 2025 season. He ended up being a breakout player on this defense.

When Jones hired Jeremy Reed as their next head coach, they knew that they were getting a package deal with their next starting quarterback coming with him. 2029 signal caller [player_tooltip player_id='1667339' first='Jeymon' last='Reed'] is Jeremy's son and he's also the 2025 PRZ-Oklahoma Freshman Of The Year after an absolutely terrific season with Altus last fall. Reed is one of the state's best athletes and the Longhorns will continue their long run of terrific quarterbacks with Reed taking over this season. Replacing the quarterback was going to be the toughest job for Jones this offseason and they've found their guy and he's one of the state's best.

2028 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1837268' first='Kade' last='Templeton'] is Derek's twin brother and gives the Longhorns two identical lockdown corners in the secondary. We mentioned earlier how the Jones secondary had the potential to be one of the better units in the state. Like his brother, Kade also has a handful of D1 offers and is coming off a breakout sophomore season. His stock has only been going up this offseason and we're excited to see how he builds on what was a very productive sophomore season. The exciting thing for Jones fans is they get this pair of twin defensive backs for two more seasons.

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 27th - Lincoln Christian
- One of the best season openers this year will take place here when Jones hosts Lincoln Christian in week zero. It's the defending 2A-1 champion hosting the defending 3A champion but they've actually flipped classes. The Bulldogs will also bring a 42-game winning streak into the season as they've gone 14-0 the last three years.
Sept. 4th - Bethany
- In week one, the Longhorns will host Bethany and this has been a very balanced and competitive non-district series since the two teams started playing in 2020. Both teams hold a 3-3 record against the other, with Jones winning last year's meeting 43-19. Jones will be looking for their third win in the last four meetings this season.
Sept. 11th - AT Mount St. Mary
- The Longhorns wrap up non-district play with a road trip to OKC to face former district foe Mount St. Mary in week two. Both teams come into this season as top five teams in Class 3A. The Longhorns have dominated the Rockets in the last two years in district play, including last year's 50-20 win. But the Rockets bring back a lot of experience and talent.
Sept. 25th - Webster
- After a week off, the Longhorns return to the field in week four to open up district play against Daniel Webster. This will be the first of several match-ups in district play where the Longhorns have no previous history with their opponent. Webster is a Tulsa Public Schools program that has struggled to get any kind of momentum.
Oct. 2nd - AT Catoosa
- The first of four lengthy district road trips comes here in week five, when the Longhorns will head east to Catoosa. These programs are new to Class 3A but come to 3A from different spots. The Longhorns moved up from Class 2A-1 while Catoosa is dropping down from Class 4A. The Indians are hoping a new class helps them turn things around.
Oct. 9th - Eufaula
- The second half of the regular season begins with a home game against Eufaula. This is another new opponent for the Longhorns as they have no previous history with the Ironheads in recent memory. Eufaula is another team that's looking to bounce back this fall. They've gone 2-8 in each of the last two seasons.
Oct. 15th - AT Vinita
- On a Fall Break Thursday night in week seven, the Longhorns will take their longest trip of the regular season when they go a little over 150 miles to face Vinita. The Hornets are another new opponent for the Longhorns and they are another program that is looking to turn things around this season. They are coming off a 1-9 season in 2025.
Oct. 23rd - AT Metro Christian
- The Longhorns will head east to face Metro Christian in week eight and this is a game that could very well decide the district title. Both teams are moving up from 2A-1 but both teams look like serious 3A contenders. Metro Christian is the only district opponent that Jones has faced in the last five years. Metro beat Jones 27-21 in the 2024 2A-1 quarterfinals.
Oct. 30th - Jay
- The Longhorns host the Jay Bulldogs for their final home game of the 2026 regular season. Jay went 3-7 in the regular season a year ago but they won the right three games and found themselves in the playoffs. Jay is another new opponent for the Longhorns and will be an interesting match-up late as they bring back some solid production.
Nov. 6th - AT Berryhill
- The regular season comes to an end in week ten with another trip to Tulsa to face Berryhill. These two teams haven't met since the first round of the 2016 playoffs. The Longhorns won that night 44-29 and would go on to capture the state championship. This year, a win against Berryhill could end up locking up the district championship.

NOTABLE

In addition to having a very difficult non-district schedule, the Longhorns find themselves as road warriors when it comes to district play. As you see in the schedule, Jones will play in a district that makes up teams in the Tulsa area and further east. And unfortunately for the Longhorns, four out of the seven district games are going to be away from home. The furthest trip will come on a Fall Break Thursday night when they travel 154 miles to face Vinita. On the bright side (I guess?) is the furthest opponent will come to them this year. The Jay Bulldogs are on the schedule for a home game and Jay is 177 miles away from Jones. The “closest” district opponent for the Longhorns this season (and next) is Berryhill and that's a school that is 87 miles away. You get this from time to time where classes and districts are laid out and for the most part, it's well balanced from a competitive and geographic standpoint. But every now and then, you get districts where you get one or two outliers from the geographic part of the conversation and that's here with Jones. Get those pikepasses ready and start fundraising for gas. The Longhorns are going to get VERY familiar with eastbound I-44 this season.
